wyoming posted:Born to Die by Lana Del Rey I pretty much love everything she does but she is subtly (probably ironically) regressive (kinda like Best Coast) and it makes me nervous how many people like this. Maybe it's because I grew up on L7, Sleater-Kinney, Courtney Love and PJ Harvey. I don't think I'm articulating this very well but half of her songs seem to be saying she'd be happy to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen. The lyrics don't add up to this exactly, but that's my impression. After all that whinging I'll just add links to her songs Carmen and Yayo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6K8Uq88BEQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMD155nc61A And to cement the fact that I'm an easy listening kind of guy this song by Gotye describes my last relationship so much that it hurts and, well, you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY Sorry if that's been posted a bunch of times already. I saw it on G+ a year or so ago and it's recently been getting playtime on the FM radio.

Maybe it's because I grew up on L7, Sleater-Kinney, Courtney Love and PJ Harvey. The thing is, I'm pretty sure her songs are supposed to be worrying, they're definitely tragic. There's a continuing theme of meeting older men or "bad boys" corrupting her. Off to the Races uses the opening lines of Lolita in its chorus for example. Born to Die isn't really something with a positive message "Sometimes loves not enough" "you like your girls insane" she's dead in the video.... When she sings she's playing a role that lacks the awareness that the songs are written with. I do have a similar worry though, but Lana and her music isn't the problem, it's the people not getting it. The AV Club heard Off to the Races and said she's trying to be an ideal male fantasy, and that, that is really worrying. Others write her off as being "fake" or a "Barbie doll" because she's playing a role. I don't know, I love her music, and find the responses to it bizarre and fascinating. I've been listening to this live version of "To Be With You" by Mr. Big quite a lot lately. I'm not sure what it is about this version that sets it apart; I guess I enjoy the electric instrumentation. I can say the same of "More Than Words" by Extreme, which was released around the same time and was also mostly acoustic. I guess these songs were the last really successful hair metal singles, coming out around the same time grunge became popular.
