One of ours (I think from NewEgg) is controllable from the keyboard, which is pretty awesome (Ctrl-Ctrl-#-Enter changes to the input labelled #).

I installed a 128 GB Crucial SSD (this one to be exact: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004W2JKZI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00) in my early 2011 13" Macbook Pro. I cannot believe how fast this thing is. However, my computer now sounds like an aircraft taking off and is running very, very hot. According to smcFanControl it was running in the 180 degree F range. This goes completely against the purpose of installing an SSD. Is there something I am missing? Do I need to send the drive back and have it replaced?

My 2010 iMac generally runs at 43 degrees C which is 109 degrees F with the fans set to @ 1150 RPM I downloaded SMC fan control (which tells you the speed and temp) and this command lets you set the [b]minimum[b] fan speed. [b]That exact command probably won't work in a 13" MBP but search for a bit and you should find one.[b] After running for a few minutes my fans hit 5,500 RPM (even though the heat doesn't go up) because my SSD didn't have a place for the third wire that went into the OEM HD (temp sensor) code:I had a 2010 and 2011 Macbook Pro 13" and never had that issue with SSD's in either of those. Are you sure you don't have Flash or something running which might cause the fans to kick on?

I honestly have no idea what it could be. I've got the activity monitor running and there are no rogue apps that should be causing it to run so hot.

Reset the PRAM (different from SMC), make sure Startup Disk in System Preferences points to the drive, maybe even make sure the battery condition is okay in System Profile.

So I got an early 2011 MBP (17", matte) locally today. It had a 750gig 5400 drive in it. Want to replace that ASAP. I have a Samsung 470 128gb SSD lying around and just installed everything on it. Clearly, I'm going to need more space. Would it be best to re-purpose the 750 gig drive in one of the OWC caddies (or the $14 knockoff) vs. just getting a Seagate 750 hybrid? Basically I get annoyed with having two drives...always having to separate apps on the SSD and photos/music on the platter. Is there a way to make the 750 join my 128 SSD seamlessly? Or am I going to just have to deal with two separate storage locations? Ninja edit: I want to install Win7 under BootCamp as well if that makes a difference.

When you say "always having to separate" as if it's tedious, perhaps you haven't made use of symlinks. You could just set up symbolic links to items on HDD and then use your computer with reckless abandon, ie iTunes and iPhoto libraries, download folder and docs. Perhaps the speed gain of SSD is not worth the half-hour of initial setup for you? If you were to use both drives as one accessible "volume" I think the results would be enough to nullify the SSD advantage. As for Win 7 Boot Camp on a secondary drive, many say to pull out your OS X drive after you've run the assistant to create your Win 7 partition, then install Win 7, then return your drives to configuration. If you don't have an external DVD drive, you could just sit your 750GB in the primary spot and hook up the SuperDrive temporarily for the install. Then, reconnect the SSD OS X boot drive and your datadoubler/tray + HDD. Else, give the free VirtualBox a shot and just go virtualized. Less of a licensing headache as posted a few pages back. I was wondering what the performance of a mini hooked up to two 24" monitors would be? Would I need to get the one with the dedicated graphics chip? I don't plan to play games or anything... I'm just concerned about performance driving both monitors. I guess this question might be moot as I'll probably wait until the mini refresh and it might have ivy bridge or something. If apple would make an Air that could drive two monitors and not have to buy their display to do it I'd totally wait in line to buy it like a crazed fan.

I plan on buying a new iMac when I graduate this summer, after the 2012 model is released, and I imagine my set up will look like: 256GB SSD partitioned in half, one for Windows, one for OSX, and a 1-2TB platter drive with Documents, Pictures, ... symlinked into ~/Whatever in OSX, and the Windows 7 (8?) Libraries pointed to those same locations. This seems like the most seamless way to operate. I imagine that FAT32 is the best option for formatting the platter drive. How is the support for HFS+ in Windows / NTFS in OSX?

I think the only downside of using ExFAT is if you tried to connect the drive to something other than a newer Mac or Windows PC you wouldn't be able to read it - but if it's an internal drive that's not a problem. Linux doesn't read it out of the box (but can read it with FUSE) or if you tried to connect it to a DVR or TV or something, it would only read regular FAT (I think)

I put a Segate Momentus XT 750gb Hybrid in my Early 2011 17" MBP and it's not sleeping. I cannot get it to spin down at all. Shame because I like the drive. If I can't figure this out, I'm going to have to return it. Saw something about downgrading the EFI to 1.6 and playing with the sleep settings. Does this work? Also, forcing sleep from the menu doesn't work. Damnit.
