I wonder what the chances are of Doug Tennapel kickstarting a proper point-and-click adventure sequel to The Neverhood? His relatively-quiet website forum has mentioned the same thing -> http://tennapel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=12977

Jane Jensen barely managed her own, the Space Quest guys aren't doing that well, and an obscure game like Neverhood probably doesn't have enough fans around to sponsor it. I guess if you aren't Tim Schafer the chances of getting an adventure game out of Kickstarter may not be huge.

At least no more than in traditional western "ufo-kidnapping women" or "vampires feasting on pure virgins" and other horror topics. Game mechanic: You match girl(s) cards with right location and capture cards to capture them. Player with most Girls captured wins. No raping involved. Would someone be offended if instead of tentacle-monster capturing girls, it would be a Vampire preying on them inside Gothic High(tm)?

The project was tasteless and disgusting and I'm glad it got canned. However, I'd like to see KS give more due diligence and can not only gross projects but obvious scams/manipulations. Class of Heroes 2 comes to mind; that project should've been cancelled the instant Ireland started lying about what exactly the money was for and probably should've been cancelled from the get-go, since it was never clear what exactly people were funding.

Cool. I'll say it again, if Kickstarter starts taking down valid projects due to external pressure you create a precedent to remove other valid projects that annoy someone, like creating a software to go around censorship in backward countries like China. Or what if someone starts making a game that annoys EA/Activision and they claim it's very similar to something they are doing? Let people vote with their wallets, Kickstarter. It worked to remove things like Your World and Call of Heroes 2. Don't make this decision for other people.

Here is another (successful) Kickstarter that involves a card game with tentacled monsters and schoolgirls: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1225737959/miskatonic-school-for-girls-deck-building-game I don't think it's supposed to be "rapey," but this may be indicative of "a thing." Also, don't buy that game since it is apparently a bad game, theme aside. In any case, I think Kickstarter is starting to show some growing pains, as they may not be able to keep up with their growing popularity, at least as far as their standards and policies are concerned. They'd probably be in a much better position if they had either initially rejected this terrible idea and made a quick amendment to their terms and conditions or stated the reason for the cancellation. But now they are just trying to sweep it under the rug, and unfortunately, subcultures thrive in dark places and love to feel persecuted, so now this happens. At least Tex Murphy will still be funded, so I'm content. I still cannot disassociate Coit Tower from those games.

It was a game "about" monsters raping children (and I'm not buying the word weaseling about how it's satire or not actually about rape, its inspiration is immediately clear). This is like eBay shutting down an auction for a human soul. It may not specifically be against their terms of service but it's not something they want to see themselves associated with, and they reserve the right to pull anything. Since Kickstarter doesn't retain any rights to the company's IP, I don't really see how this is a censorship issue.

Honestly, I can see the devs getting cold feet about it, because that kind of stuff is barely legal in the U.S. (it might even be illegal now), and IS specifically outlawed to varying degrees in most countries. Rape play or any sort of porn with a setting where consent is not given without coersion is a HUGE and many countries do ban any depictions of rape if it's in a pornographic setting (i.e. it can be done to varying degrees in a normal theatrical feature, like with Irreversible or The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, just not in something that's sold and handled like porn). And yes, this can even include situations where the actors have pre- and post-shoot interviews; I think that's just a U.S. thing. And since I don't think Kickstarter can filter pledges based on country of origin, some overzealous prosecutor in Canada/England/Australia can make a huge stink about Kickstarter and the game devs running an international rape media cartel. All of this applies equally to animated stuff in most countries, and I haven't even mentioned the underage thing. Even if legal to do in the U.S., it can be a huge problem if everyone starts talking about it on the news and all of a sudden you start getting turned away at customs whenever you try to travel internationally. That's a pretty huge roll of the die for making a game. univbee fucked around with this message at 17:34 on May 16, 2012 |

Let's be fair, tentacle bento is more like a game where you win by luring as many children as possible into your dirty van. Even if there were a game about vampires preying on high school girls, the rape in that game would be metaphorical at best. The rape in the tentacle game is implied (thus my comparison above.) Vampires drink blood. Tentacle monsters rape.

Kickstarter doesn't seem to have a problem with adult content to a degree, with the one I linked sitting around 300%. Then again, it's pretty aboveboard and indie and surprisingly un-creepy. The card game failed that last criteria pretty spectacularly.

I guess I'll make an actual post about this whole Tentacle Bento thing even though I've been trying to avoid it. First off, anyone who says this game isn't about rape is absolutely delusional. Everything about the game is as close to rape as you can get without actually saying the word. You know it, I know it, you know loving well the target audience knows it too. On top of this, they slap the design of the characters and the capture pictures shown in the video itself. Then, to hammer it all home, they have the hypersexualization of all the characters. Anyone even slightly familiar with the tropes set up here knows this is about rape, and anyone with half a brain can probably tell you how the idea of setting up a game based around rape is a pretty loving tasteless idea. Kickstarter likely weighed the fallout of this vs. the damage funding a game that is literally about heavily implied rape could do to their reputation and shut it down. And they're well within their rights to do so. This isn't censorship, or limiting freedom of speech or anything else like that. Those are arguments that a 12 year old banned from a forum would make. Freedom of speech doesn't protect you from a company asking you to take your business elsewhere when you decide to go beyond the realm of common human decency. It's not censorship either, since all that happened was that the funding was cancelled. The project is still there and Kickstarter was pretty lenient and let them advertise a new place to get funding right on their Kickstarter page. But to the point I stated before: This is a game about heavily implied rape and there's no denying this. Kickstarter was well within their rights to go "not on our site, thanks."
