Jenny Hirsch FP: 3-?4

Jenny is standing by Ada's side, trying to get a handle on the injuries. She can't see the full extent of it, but it doesn't look too bad; it seems to have been diffused over the whole body rather than concentrated in any one spot, which might have caused deep second degree or even a third degree burns. Still, it would hurt like hell and if some of the skin blisters already forming broke... Jenny wasn't sure what kind of infections you might get from the Nevernever, but they were probably less than pleasant.

Jenny leans in close, talking a soothing tone of voice and sticking some of that bedside manner. "You're going to be okay, Ada. We need to get you out of here, though. Can you walk? Good. Take it easy."

Helping her to her feet, Jenny talks through the pin to Cole. "I'm here, Cole. The demon is gone. Dead. Whatever. Ada is hurt and we need to get out of here, and I don't even know where 'here' is. Grab my medical kit, it should be in the trunk of my car, and have a place ready where we can start treating these burns. A cool bath would be a good start."

Self-compel on "Don't Worry, I Can Fix It" to start medical attention. Scholarship -++- + 5 = 5 to know the proper procedure for burn treatment.

"I'm sending a guide to get you out, you should recognize her. It's quarter after 8pm real time, so... yeah we should be able to make it back to my place before you get here. Be careful, I'll see you soon."

The communication cuts off. Three or four minutes pass before a small red light bobs into view flitting fast over the ashfield. It's Nidawi, and she nearly crashes right into Hugues before collapsing on his shoulder.

"Grumpypants! I was worried bout'cha! Come come, gotta get you outta here right away!" She flicks her wings and hovers in front of the group. "Whatchu lookin' at! Come on, come on! This notta safe place!" She pauses, looking closer at the group. "Queens' power, you all look half deadses. Was it a biggun?" The pixie hovers up, looking at the demon's huge lifeless corpse. "Yea that's a biggun alright! Wow, never saw a DEAD biggun afore." Her color pulses brightly with... pride? "Good job Grumpypants! Can't wait to tell everybody about this."

Our [redacted] (pixie) appears! Nidawi will take you back to the portal (3 environmental damage rolls, you can split them however you want.) and once you get there the portal border is a difficulty of 3.

"That was a mite bit hairer than I'd like." JR says as he makes his way over to Ada. "Here, take my air. Got a feelin' you need more than I do right now." It didn't hardly seem right, the way things happened sometimes. Jenny'd been possessed, Ada was near crisped, and Hugues looked about to collapse - but JR himself wasn't even scratched. "C'mon, let's get moving, 'fore anything else shows up."

"Nidawi? What on earth are you..." Well, pixies weren't the best spies, considering Weayaya's incident with the cake. Hugues probably could have just bribed Nidawi to spill the beans with a single piece of candy. "Yeah...just get us back home."

With the pixie guiding the way, getting back to the portal site wasn't difficult. Even though his headache wasn't getting better, he didn't want to push it on Jenny, and Ada wasn't in good condition either. JR probably didn't know how to do a portal anyway. "I'll get the portal. You guys watch in case something else is alive out here."

(Uhh...Some kind of Thaumaturgy to create a portal. Complexity is 3, so it's child's play for Hugues.

Jenny Hirsch FP: 4

"Come on, Ada", Jenny says as she helps her up the steps into Cole's office. "We're going to get you into the bathroom and I'm going to help you get undressed. I need to see how bad it is."

Motioning Cole to follow them with the kit, Jenny helps her into the bathroom and then pointedly waits for Cole to leave, shutting the door behind him. Jenny carefully cuts the clothing off Ada, looking for signs of any melting. It's all pretty well crisped, but none of the pieces seem to have melted into her skin. That's a start.

Jenny checks the water temperature - it's tepid but not cold. Jenny ushers Ada into the water while checking her kit for any of the... Ringers... something, but no dice. "Okay. You lay there for a minute and I'm going to call your family. I'm going to give you a cup of water as well - I know it might hurt, but you need to drink it. Slowly. Burning dehydrates the body and you need to start replacing fluids. It's going to hurt for a while, but you'll be okay."

Jenny walks to the door, opens it slightly and pauses. "And Ada? Thank you."

Hugues tiredly stepped followed Jenny as she practically carried Ada to the office. Before stepping through Cole's threshold, he gently pinched Nidawi on the arm, holding her in place. "Stay in plain view." He said simply, while waiting for Cole to invite them back in.

He sat for a while, waiting for Cole to come back down from the bathroom where Jenny was treating Ada. It was best to just let the metaphorical cat out of the bag himself. It would make the inevitable and just as metaphorical lashing less painful. "Sooo...how did you and Nidawi meet?" He said, pointing at the bored pixie sitting on the table.

"Oh, someone's been paying her in pizza to stalk me." Cole said, his tone unreadable. "You wouldn't happen to know who, would you?"

"Already told you it was Grumpypants here!" Nidawi piped up. "Where's my cookies! I went an' got em back just like you said!" Cole sighed and retrieved a blue tin from a shelf in the kitchen. The pixie squeaked when he opened it and dived into the pile of chocolate chips.

"I caught her in the Ways between here and Edinburgh. There are defenses on that path, and she nearly got herself killed trying to follow me." He looked away. "Why, Hugues?"

"Don't even mention it." Ada said, waving a hand tiredly, her eyes firmly shut as she sat in the tub. Her expression appeared locked into a pained grimace as the temperate water soaked her blasted skin, but as soon as Jenny closed the door behind her, Ada opened her eyes and turned her head around to the tattered remains of her clothes. Perhaps it was her imagination playing tricks on her, but Ada thought she saw a scarlet glint coming from the heap. "Hell of a lot of work you were." She murmured to nobody in particular, her expression relaxing slightly. "I'll have to remember to give thanks to Ruby for that jewel...I owe her one.". Leaning backwards a little, Ada let the tension that had accompanied her since the stone's flash seep away and took a deep breath, satisfied with her little triumph.

It wasn't long before Ada drifted off. She floated in a hazy white space for a while. A place where there was no pain. It was quiet, save for the dripping sound of water. It was far away, echoing as if from inside a cave. Ada put her feet down, walking towards the sound. The white light grew dim, gaining a blue tint. The floor beneath her bare feet was cool stone. She reached the edge of a pool of water, and looked out over it.

On the other side a little girl looked back. Tears dropped from her cheeks into the pool but she made no other sound. Her skin was seared, blackened as if by a great fire. Most of her long red hair was gone, burned away. She hugged herself tightly and shivered. Those big green eyes looked right into Ada, unflinching.

The girl wiped her tears away with one charred hand and nodded once, mouth drawn in a tight line. Then she stepped backwards, away from the pool. And faded into the darkness.

Ada woke up with a start.

Ada duSang - FP: 0

Ada opened her eyes suddenly, only to find herself back at Cole's home, sitting on the tub, hand outstretched toward where the girl had been...only there was no girl anymore. Just normal, lukewarm water and the silence that wasn't really a silence that belonged to busy places where activity had briefly ceased. That, and a memory she didn't remember, because it couldn't be anything else.

"She's dead." Ada firmly told herself as she curled up into a ball and stared at the wall. "She's absolutely, positively dead. You saw her fade away. You've been here before, and you're *not* going back to pretending it didn't happen. You've got to move on." She mused, trying to reassure herself with words that sounded rather hollow. "She really is dead..." She murmured, her voice escaping her lips, low and dull.

...But what if she wasn't? What if she'd gotten everything...something...anything wrong? What if things had changed? And what if, having realized the possibility that things weren't as they seemed, she passed her chance to find out what had happened to Alisa? Could she forget what she'd just seen? Ada never had been much for mirrors before, having seen those green eyes staring back at her on the reflection too many times before. Was this yet another good excuse to avoid their gaze?

"What...if...?"

"Information." Hugues said simply. "Information gathering. Whenever things go bad in the city I set up a small information network of pixies to keep track of what the various factions in the city are up to. Makes things a lot bearable when you can figure out who's moving and who isn't, and helps you figure out who is responsible."

Then Hugues let out a sigh. "So I could say that I sent Nidawi after you to see how having a new Warden in town would upset the balance of power in the city, and it'd be true but that wouldn't answer your question.

"Our first introduction wasn't very...really was not very pleasant. There was both a murder and an execution and you treated me like a little kid. When I sent Nidawi after you, I wasn't sure if I could trust you. The fact that I've sat at this table, drank your tea and reforged your sword says that now I do."

Hugues looked over to the cookie tin. "Hey, don't get yourself fat on those chocolate chips or I'm going to cut back on your pizza. You're probably overdue to start stalking someone else." He looked over at Cole. "Any suggestions? I've got one searching for Skavis and Malvora hide outs, another keeping an eye on that fat ghoul we saw trying to eat Mrs. Nazarene, and a third watching Vernoica."

"I think that's the straightest answer you've ever given me." Cole said, also watching the pixie. "I appreciate that. But if I hadn't caught her she'd still be following me, indefinitely as far as I can tell. You don't do that to people you trust." His voice is calm, but Hugues can tell this really bothers Cole. "We have enough problems without treating each other like potential enemies. I'm on your side. I let Nidawi report back for a few days to prove that to you. But that ends now." He taps a finger on the desk, punctuating the words.

He sighs. "I am sorry about the execution. I wouldn't have just let it happen like that but Commander Bellworth was right. I gazed her, Hugues. That girl was lobotomizing people, ripping out memories and feelings, leaving nothing but grinning puppets. It might have started with good intentions, repressing abuse or depression, but then it went past that. It always does. There's no coming back from what she did. There were so many..." He stopped, trying not to remember the sight of all those twisted faces.

"Hold Nidawi in reserve. I've got a feeling we'll need her."

Hugues stayed eeriely quiet when it came to Polly. He had kept an eye on her ever since that incident with the vigilante warlock, but obviously hadn't kept close enough to figure out what was going on. And JR's statement didn't help him either. Sometimes people go back - turn to being one of the monsters rather than fighting 'em.

For now, Hugues looked at the back of his hand, the hand he accidentally saw with his Sight when removing the curse from Ada. It looked like his old hand, from his old body. What he did was monstrous and yet...was he a monster? It's drat near impossible to answer that yourself. No one is the villain in their own story. Which is why even Wardens had to execute warlocks who thought they were doing the right thing.

Worrying wasn't going to do anything.

"Cole, you met Nidawi, want to meet the rest of my payroll? It's probably about time for me to get the nightly meeting at my place, but Nidawi could tell them to meet here. Of course this means ordering pizza, and I think I may have hired too many; it's starting to cut into my allowance. So no pizza for us unless someone else wants to pay."

Cole glanced over at Jenny. She was still on the phone, talking to the hospital (he thought). Ada had not looked good when they brought her in, but the burns were light compared to other Hellfire-induced wounds he'd seen.

"Go ahead and call in your squad Hugues. I'll pay tonight. Least I can do, since..." I didn't get to go with you earlier.

He turned to J.R. and gave him the basic rundown of the plan. Potion of Instant Priest, bringing the imposter to Mitsuo's house (which had been turned into something of a demon deathtrap in the intervening hours,) and a big fight where hopefully they got to take out as many of the demons as possible. Maybe attempt to catch one and force it to talk if an opportunity came up.

Jenny Hirsch FP: 4

"...alright, I'll be there. Yes, I promise. I've gotta get off the phone, I'll be there in a bit."

Jenny sighs, hanging up the phone. Talking with Ada's aunt had not been much fun. At all. After all that, they didn't have the facilities for burn treatment, which meant she had to try and call up some of her old friends at the hospital.

Well. 'Friends'. Strauss had wheedled and danced around the issue until she'd agreed to go to the reunion, which Jenny would just as soon clawed her eyes out than attend, but...

Later.

"Ada's family was a no go, they don't have the equipment for burn treatment. It was worth a shot, at least - it would have been secure. As it is, I've got Ada a nice, quiet room in the hospital. It's away from the surgical areas and critical patients, too, which should keep the magical interference from ruining someone else's day. We can't leave Ada alone in the hospital - it's far too tempting of a target, and she can't go without treatment or the burns are going to, uh, deteriorate."

Jenny pauses momentarily, thinking hard. It'd been quite a day. She'd love to have gone down to the house and applied excessive tearing force to demonic posterior in a repeated and -

Okay, so thinking in medical jargon means the choice is pretty obvious.

"I'll go with her. I can help with the treatment, if nothing else. It's also been a very strange day for me, so something familiar might help me settle down a bit."

Cole had laid out some spare clothes for Ada to use. Basic black sweatpants, a matching baggy sweatshirt that zipped up the front. Easy to get into without much pain. It was too big for her but not by much. Jenny helped her dress and they got down the stairs and into the car without too much trouble. The drive to the hospital was uneventful, and Ada was unusually quiet during the trip. She had a lot to think about. So did Jenny.

Jenny pulled up under the ER sign and unloaded Ada into a waiting wheelchair. Strauss came down herself to escort the two of them to a quiet room on the second floor, well away from the more tempermental equipment and ICU.

As two male nurses set Ada up in her private burn ward Strauss took Jenny aside. "Heaven's sakes, Jenny. I didn't realize you meant one of those duSang's. Her family paid for half the new children's center of course we'll do everything we can for her. That doesn't mean you're getting out of the reunion, though." Strauss was tall, blonde, and unreasonably thin for someone with two kids. She was one of those women who was smart and pretty, and her position as hospital administrator probably had to do with one as much as the other. You couldn't be mad at her for having the perfect life... well you could but it was unreasonable. Still, it wasn't fair that some people had all the luck. "I don't suppose you can tell me what the hell happened to her?"

--

A minute or two after the girls left the pizza got there and Hugues called in his payroll. There wasn't much to report that night. Hinto still hadn't found any more vampires than the ones they already knew about. Calfuray and Chepi had only one piece of news. Veronica had been to see FatGhoul. It wasn't clear exactly why, the pixies hadn't been able to get close enough to overhear them and no bodies had exchanged hands. But FatGhoul had been very happy at the end of the exchange and done a lot of bowing.

"Who's Veronica?" Cole asked at the end of it.

"She was on the party boat we rescued Claire from. She's a Raith." Hugues said, as he fumbled though his bag of various supplies. He tossed the business card on the table. "She gave me her phone number." One part nonchalant, one part smug. Especially since Jenny and Ada were gone.

With a dissatisfied grunt, Hugues sat back in his chair, and took a sip of Sprite. "Something's not right. There are a few dots that don't seem to connect, even though they should. From the impression I got from the two White Court vampires that attacked us, some, but not all, of the White Court seems involved in this. I couldn't tell what family that one vampire with the ugly tan was from, but it was probably Skavis or Malvora. Either way, I think that family is involved, and it's possible if not likely the others aren't.

"Then there's the issue with the demon necromancy. Now Cole, I know you're still upset about us summoning a demon, but there's something we learned that I haven't brought up because I didn't see how relevant it was until now. Our source said that someone in the White Court struck a bargain with a demon. A big one. One that offers her-it's a she apparently-her powers to raise the dead. The exact details as to the how are iffy, but, we saw something today that makes me really concerned.

"That demon that pretended to be JR, seriously hurt Ada and possessed Jenny. But you saw that body it left behind. Like that demon was possessing a corpse. I'm not going to pretend I know what that was, or how it did it, but I think now we have a link between this uber-demon the White Court is playing with, and the demons that want to bring about the Wrath of God. Well, it's a lead. One that we need to add to the list of things to investigate. At the very least, I know just the woman in the White Court who doesn't seem directly involved and is at least willing to pretend she doesn't want to eat me." Hugues took another sip of Sprite and cleared his throat. "Of course, Lauden comes first."

Jenny forced her smile into place and nodded at Strauss. She barely looked older than she had during senior year, and that was just unfair. "Oh, I know I'd never get out of that promise once I'd made it."

Jenny grimaced internally. That was way too hostile. It wasn't her fault she was so... so very, very her. Taking an effort, Jenny improved her smile. "It's good to see you again, Jackie. I just wish it'd been in happier circumstances. Ada was helping me fix a problem with my boiler when it, er, sprung a leak. There was minimal direct dermal interaction but there was enough exposure to cause blistering on 10% of the skin, even after a cold water bath, so-"

Jackie looked a little crosseyed. Administrator, not a doctor. "Sorry. She got scaled by the steam out of the boiler, and it covered most of her body. She was lucky - it could have been much worse if she hadn't been wearing long-sleeved clothes at the time. Mitsuo pauses in his work, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead with the back of his hand. Forward Thinking has seen some major changes in the last couple of hours. Most of Mitsuo's personal effects have been packed away in the few small closets and corners, along with nearly all of the books and scrolls. The portrait of Tsukada Rikichi hangs in the closet as well on a hastily-installed nail. The sword rack, however, is still in its place, and the swords currently occupy the couch, waiting for Mitsuo to tie them on. Furniture has been pushed against walls. The downstairs chairs have been stacked and stowed in corners, hopefully minimizing their value as projectiles. The conference table, front desk, and filing cabinets are too heavy to move, so instead they've been worked around, creating small bastions of cover. The shoji screens from upstairs have been redeployed for the same purpose. Along the walls, in chalk and charcoal, run the runes and kanji characters that Cole and Mitsuo have inscribed as the beginnings of defensive wards.

Swiping a soda from the thaumafridge, Mitsuo cracks it for a quick swig, then presses it to his forehead while striding over to the phone. He quickly dials in Hugues' cell phone number, taking another pull while it rings.

OK since people are desynced again, Refresh and Minor Milestone from the whole demon adventure happens in transit. So Ada and Jenny have hit it already, and the menfolk will as soon as they leave the office.

"Oh, they're fine. Aiden just started walking last month." Jackie babbles for a few minutes about her babies, happy to have an excuse. But Jenny isn't really interested and Jackie eventually figures it out. "I guess I should get back to work." she says, a bit sad. "I'll keep you posted on the reunion. It'll be fun I swear!"

Jenny peeks in on Ada who is mostly gauze-covered by now and resting. Everything seems safe and sound for the moment, and she desperately needs a coffee, so she heads down to the cafeteria. It's almost empty, visiting hours are long over and most of the people there are hospital workers. But there are still a few of the more haggard looking family members like always. People who might be "next of kin" in the next few hours. It's not a happy atmosphere.

On her way to the coffee pot, Jenny recognizes an older woman sitting at one of the tables next to a little girl who was devouring what looked like her third jello cup. Mother Sula and Claire. Claire noticed her immediately and waved like only a kid can. "Hey!" she calls. Jenny walks over. "We're visiting mommy!"

"Shhhh, child." Mother Sula sighs, turning to Jenny. "I'm the only one left to look after the girl, with Nessa here in ICU and Andy doing Lord knows what, fighting demons like as not." She shakes her head. "It isn't looking good for Nessa. They've asked us to wait... just in case."

It's quiet in Ada's room. Between the painkillers in the IV and whatever that cream was they lathered her with before wrapping her up like a mummy she's feeling pretty drat good! But something draws her attention. Her borrowed clothes are neatly folded on a desk, with the red stone necklace sitting on top. The jewel flashes, bright and angry. But she doesn't see anything. Does she need to be touching it for it to work? She can't seem to reach it...

Ada duSang - FP: 0 -> 1

After everybody had left the room, Ada closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Now that the pain from the burns had practically disappeared and she'd gotten to where she needed to be, she had the perfect opportunity to relax...and think. The dream she'd had back at Cole's home had stuck with her indelibly, refusing to fade away or disappear. Now that she had time to think, Ada begun reflecting on it, thinking about what to do.

It hadn't been a simple nightmare due to guilt, she was sure of it. She hadn't forgotten about Alisa, but her memory hadn't come back to haunt her in a long time. And she refused to consider the possibility that the wounds she'd sustained while fighting the demon were to blame, either: Ada knew better than to think of herself in such dismissive terms. So it had to mean something. Something...but what? The dream had been very brief and simple. She'd seen Alisa, alone in a dank, cold place, and hurting, and that had been that. It was so simple, it almost felt like there wasn't enough of a dream to chase, but Alisa's glance had been all that Ada needed to see. She needed to see Alisa again, to ask her what was wrong, but wanting to do something and getting it done were two very different things.

"Maybe it's a question of mindset. Maybe I just need a good enough reason to see her." She mused. She was of half a mind to test her theory in that very moment, but a red flash caught her attention. Looking at the stone on top of her clothes, Ada grumbled then wearily sighed, closing her eyes for a moment. "Not again, dammit. I just got done saving her...give me a break.". In spite of her protests, however, she opened her eyes and stood up, groggily, then slowly began to make her way to the stone, the IV drip she'd been hooked up to in tow. Gingerly, she placed a hand on it...

"Uhhh..." Hugues pulls out the phone, and looks at the name on it. Mitsuo. "It's Mitsuo. I should probably take this...uhh...outside. Away from more of your hexes." He glared straight at Cole for a second, before stepping out. "Ni hao. What's up, Mitsuo?"

Mitsuo - FP: 1

Briefly taken aback, Mitsuo pulls the handset away from his head and stares at it for a long moment. Then he brings it to his ear. "Next time I see you I am changing your cell phone's ring sound to bagpipes. Listen. I need your help with setting things up here, and apparently organizing a refresher course on Asian culture and history. Bring others if you can, except for JR, of course; he has other duties. Oh, and what is going on with Jenny? Cole left in a hurry."

...why bagpipes? And "Ni Hao" wasn't Japanes--well that probably made sense. This is what he got for believing one of his classmates who in hindsight probably would have loved to seen Hugues come back to class covered in bruises. If only it didn't happen every once in a while already.

"Uhh...right, sorry about that. Jenny's fine and not being possessed by a demon. Ada got burned pretty badly so she and Jenny are at the hospital. So it's just going to be me at your place, since Cole's going to escort JR. I can set up a few magical landmines and Wards for you. See you in a bit."

Hugues hung up and turned his phone off to prevent further Hex damage, then knocked on the door waiting for Cole to let him back in. "That was Mitsuo, just checking up on what happened with Jenny. I need to head to his place to help set things up more. Uhh...go on ahead. I'm going to wait for a cab. Maybe I can get away with bribing another one to ignore my age and curfew."

Cole heads for the phone. "No bribes needed, I know a guy. I mean, he'll still charge but he won't ask questions." In a few minutes two cabs pull up outside of Cole's office. An older man with some 100 years out of date sideburns leans out the window of the first one. "Heya, Warden. My cousin'll take the little guy. Where ya'll headed?"

A quick goodbye and Hugues is off to Mitsuo's while JR and Cole head for the Shrine of St. Jude. "I gotta veil us going out, Maxwell. Just so you know." Cole warns the driver.

"If anything breaks down I'm adding it to your tab." the cabbie says, grinning. Cole winces.

As soon as Ada touches the necklace she's hit with a vision. No, several visions. Dozens.

A little girl coughs weakly for the last time as doctors huddle around her.
An old man seizes in his hospital bed as his heart gives out.
A teenage boy's eyes go dark as he bleeds from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest on the operating table.
A mother breathes her last as her baby gives it's first cry.
More, an unending stream of faces. People she's never met, and never will because they're all...
Heart monitors flatline. Oxygen masks are applied. CPR is performed.

Nothing she can do. So many, all around her, so many... One familiar face flashes by but she can't seem to focus on it.

The hospital's ambient energy is interfering with the necklace! Defend with Discipline. To escape the visions, beat a +3. To find your true vision in the mess, beat a +5.

Ada duSang - FP: 1

Ada wasn't expecting the vision to hit her as hard as it had. The visions didn't overlay with the room as they had before when she'd drove her car to Cole's place, but instead replaced it completely. Blinded by the visions, she stumbled back, moaning. It was too much. Too many people dying in too many places at once, and she could do nothing about it. Just like the last time she'd paid an hospital a visit...just like...

"Stop it." Ada told herself, as yet another vision flickered in front of her eyes and vanished. "Control yourself! Don't lose yourself in this. Take a deep breath, Ada. Concentrate! Find what you're looking for!" Following her mental instructions, Ada began pushing the images aside, slowly. It was tough work, and her head and burns began to ache again as she strained to sort through the visions, but she managed in the end. Panting, Ada witnessed her vision.

Rolling that defense, Ada gets +/+-, or +5, exactly enough to stave off the visions and find the prize!

The cab pulled up into the church parking lot. Cole threw a basic veil over J.R. and they headed for the door. Nothing looked out of place, and there wasn't any feeling of foreboding outside. It was pretty normal, all things considered. The church threshold settled over the two of them as they entered, and the veil fizzled.

Dennis was still sitting in the same exact place he had been, still staring up at the cross. He didn't say anything as the two men passed by him towards the back room where Lauden and Andy were waiting. "All's been quiet." Andy confirmed, nodding to Cole. "And it's late. Are you still sure that they're after Lauden?"

Cole nodded. "He's the only one that fits the pattern. I think they'll at least make a play for him before looking elsewhere. Time to get changed, J.R. We're late as it is, but hopefully it'll just look like I'm moving 'Lauden' to a safer location. If they're watching they'll be on us as soon as we're out the door."

Andy handed his car keys to Cole. "Try not to smash it up too much." he said.

Lauden looks thoughtful for a moment. "Something like that won't work without Faith, capital F." he says, finally. "But... I do have something, I think." He turns and ducks into a storage room, coming out with a simple cross of black walnut. It's about a foot long, and there's a hole in the back where it used to hang on a nail. Heavy and hard, it could do as a blunt weapon in a pinch. He hands it to J.R. "It's rare to find a believer with power. God go with you."

The potion isn't terribly pretty to watch work and Cole looks away. Andy and Lauden just stare in facinated horror. After a minute it's done though, and when J.R. speaks it's with Lauden's voice. He takes a few steps. It's like... being wrapped in some kind of skintight suit. Heavier than normal, slower.

"They can't help us." says a quiet voice. Father James, clutching his injured arm with his good hand, stands in the doorway to his small sleeping room. "No one can. We're all going to die." He ducks back into the room and closes the door quietly.

Cole breaks the awkward silence by clearing his throat. "Just sit tight for the rest of the night, we'll contact you when it's clear."

Andy walks with the wizards back to the door. "Are you sure you don't want an extra hand out there?"

"Lauden needs someone to stay with him, in case this doesn't work. I hope he won't need you but..." Cole shakes his head. "We'll be fine." Andy looks unsure. Then he looks out over the empty pews, frowning. Dennis is gone.

J.R. and Cole head across the parking lot to Andy's car. Nothing happens. The car starts up after a few tries, and Cole eases it onto the street. Nothing continues to happen. Cole starts to worry that he's made a mistake. And that's when something slams down on the roof of the car, denting it inwards several inches and cracking the windshield with the force. Long claws burst through the roof and start slicing it open like a can opener.

Hugues Turner Fate Points: 3 --> 1

The moment Hugues arrives at Mitsuo's...office? House? Bunker-place, he immediately get to work on making the place more magically defensible. First step was the foundation to put all the extra defenses on. Powerful defenses could be just as hostile to the owner as their enemies, and they needed a way to get rid of them when the attack was all over. Fortunately, Mitsuo happened to live rather close to a small Leyline. Hugues took a $1 bill from his wallet and doodled a quick magic circle on it while holding it in the leyline, to seal it's energies in it. American paper money was durable enough to not get destroyed casually, but could still be forcibly ripped apart. Now he and Mitsuo could set up defenses and safely remove them by dumping them into the leyline. Granted, dumping magical energy into the leylines would be like dumping oil into a stream, but it was the fastest and safest (for them) to get rid of the energy. Hopefully Mother Nature could take one for the sake of New Orleans tonight.

(Lore Declaration for "Local Leyline" to justify the Ward Self-Removal portion of the defenses we're building.
-//- +5 +1 (The Sight) = 4!
Now all future magical defenses added in this scene will be connected to Hugues through his Thauma-Dollar. When the Thauma-Dollar is destroyed or leaves the scene, the extra magical defenses will get flushed into the Leyline.)

Next was the escape plan. Mitsuo and Hugues had agreed to make the second floor the last resort, and they needed an escape plan from that if things went really south. Using Mitsuo's spare toothbrush as a key (seriously, who would think to use that?) Hugues placed an unfinished Concrete to Sand Transmutation on the wall, which could be used to blow open a hole.

(Concrete to Sand Transmutation, activated by toothbrush. Target Complexity is 5, matched by Hugues' Lore.
One shift at a time, control rolls: ++-+ = 2 /+-/ = 0 +-// = 0 +-+- = 0 -/-+ = -1 No -4, so success!
This spell will create an opening in Mitsuo's bathroom wall to the outside for quick escape. The hole should hopefully be large enough for the largest party member to get through.)

Then the stairway backup Ward. With the second floor as the retreat point, they needed something to keep them safe. For this, he needed Mitsuo to help out, since this was probably the strongest extra defense they were going to add. The trigger to activate this Ward was a book from Mitsuo's library, sitting inconspicuously next to the doorway. Opening the book near the door would activate the energies in the Ward.

(Staircase Ward, activated by book. Target Complexity is something high. Hugues base Lore is 5. Hugues' Maneuvers on Lore succeeded, failed on Discipline and Resources. Mitsuo's Maneuver on Lore and Discipline succeeded. Total Complexity is now 11.
One shift at a time, control rolls: +-/+ = 1 +-/+ = 1 --// = -2 --+/ = -1 --// = -2 /+++ = 3 /--+ = -1 -/-/ = -2 ++/+ = 3 +-+/ = 1 -++- = 0 No -4, so success!
This functions as a simple 11-shift reflective Ward on the border on the door from the Stairs to the Second Floor.)

Now for the front door. Mitsuo already had a Ward there, but they were fully expecting that Ward to get breached, and Hugues wanted to place a few traps there.

(Gust of Wind Trap, activated upon breaching the front door's Ward. Target Complexity is something high. Hugues base Lore is 5. Hugues' Maneuvers on Lore, Discipline and Resources all passed. Total Complexity is now 11.
One shift at a time, control rolls: //+- = 0 ++-- = 0 +-// = 0 ---/ = -3 --+/ = -1 +/// = 1 -/+/ = 0 /+-/ = 0 /--/ = -2 +++- = 2 --// = -2 No -4, so success! This functions as an 11-shift Air Attack which deals "damage" in the form of forced movement against whoever first breaches the Threshold without being invited in.)

(Landmine Trap, activated on the round after the front door's Ward is breached. Target Complexity is something high. Hugues' Maneuvers on Lore succeeded, failed on Discipline and Resources. Spending a Fate Point on Clone of a WWII Warden. Total Complexity is now 9.
One shift at a time, control rolls: -+// = 0 --+/ = -1 //+- = 0 -+++ = 2 ++/- = 1 /--+ = -1 ---- = -4!!! Spending FP to fix this. /--/ = -2 //// = 0 +-++ = 2 Excluding that minor hiccup, this is a success!
This functions as a 7-shift Fire Zone Attack on the zone outside the front door to hopefully get some decent stress damage on the demons. It triggers one round after the front door's Ward is breached, so hopefully demons will crowd around the door when they realize they can get through.)

Cat of Wealth and Taste

The hospital visions relent, falling into the background. Ada finds what she was looking for.

A streetlamp flickers dimly over the empty parking lot behind the Shrine of St. Jude. A man knees in the puddle of light. His back is to her, but she can see he's missing a hand. A shadowed human figure steps up behind him, pressing a long sharp blade to the man's neck. Father James tilts his head back, exposing his throat as if to make it easier on his killer. His lips move, and though she can't hear him she can tell what he's saying. "Finish it."

A square shaft of yellow light opens onto the parking lot as the church door bursts open. Andy charges out, machete in one hand and a neat little revolver in the other. The gun fires soundlessly, a half dozen flashes of light. The shadowed man twists the blade. James falls forward, eyes going blank. Something tackles Andy from behind, knocking him to the ground and pinning him. The machete skids away across the cracked blacktop, coming to a stop before the shadowed man's feet. He bends over and picks it up. He walks over to Andy casually, trailing red blood from the bullet wounds. Andy's eyes widen in recognition as the blade comes down...

Sweat drips off Ada as the vision releases her at last.

WORDS IN THE HEART

Jenny Hirsch FP: 4

Jenny smiles sadly at Claire and Nessa, taking the open the seat at the table next to the energetic girl. "I'm very sorry to hear that, Sula. I'd hoped..." Jenny's voice trails off as her train of thought gets on some dark rails. It's just not fair.

Grimacing and trying to cover for the lapse in concentration, she takes a sip of the coffee and then grimaces even more. "One of the real improvements in my life that I've seen since leaving veterinary school is a marked improvement in coffee quality. There's just something about the atmosphere in any place like this," Jenny says, motioning with a free hand to the cafeteria, "that makes everything taste awful. Sad. I'm actually here with Ada. I had a, uh, demon problem that she helped me out with, but she got burned by the demon. Literally burned, that is, not metaphorically. Although I guess that too."

Jenny knew she was rambling. It'd been a long day. "I shouldn't leave Ada alone too long - would you like to come up and see her? She might be asleep, but seeing Claire would be good for her if she's awake. If you'd like to take a few minutes to yourself I can watch Claire for a little while as well."

As soon as the vision ended, Ada put the stone down and grabbed her clothes. It was going to be a very long night, from the looks of it. There just wasn't any way she was going to let Andy and Father James come to harm like that. Especially not after rescuing Claire from the boat and saving the Father's life.

Before she could start dressing up, however, the door opened, revealing Jenny...and company. Inwardly, Ada cursed. She wasn't expecting this, but there wasn't time to waste. Walking over to Jenny, Ada grabbed her hand and pulled her away before whispering into her ear.

"We've got trouble. Andy and Father James, things are about to get really nasty for them. We need to get going and get to the Shrine, fast."

Mother Sula stands near the door, a worried expression on her aged face. Claire tugs on her hand, questioning. Sula nods to the girl, and Claire takes a few unsure steps forward. She grabs Jenny's hand and presses something into it. A tiny leather pouch that smells of sandalwood. "It's luck." she says. "Gramma made one for mama, so I made one for you."

"It's a gris-gris." Sula explains. "A wish for good luck. I am thinking you might be needing it. Come girl, these two don't need you under their feet now." Claire scampers back to her side. "Be very careful." Sula warns. "There is an ill wind blowing tonight."

You guys can go whenever, Ada's gotten patched up enough to go with if she wants to.

--

The demon on the roof of the car shrieks, and the claws retreat for a moment. Cole slams on the brakes and the stunned creature loses its grip and tumbles off the hood to land broken in front of the bumper. It's a bird-like thing, all leather wings and thin bones, with an impish fat body and talons on its hands and feet. Cole guns the gas and the car lurches forward, around the injured demon.

A glance in the rear view mirror reveals... rather a lot more of them.

Cole can't drive for poo poo so he's tagging JR's Power of Christ to avoid crashing the car into the demon. Rather than draw this out since it's an NPC driving and JR isn't allowed to shoot his guns, we're just going to make it to Mitsuo's with a small horde of demons a minute behind us. Once the preparations were finished, Hugues sat in the upstairs area, looking out the windows. He definitely heard the incoming car before he saw it, the engine was loud as could be. There were only two reasons to do that, and if someone was street racing, there would have been multiple cars.

"They're here, and they've probably got something on their tail!" Hugues shouted, bounding down the stairs, and looked out the front door. Sure enough, there was Cole, JR-Lauden and Jesus Christ that's a lot of demons. "Get inside!" Hugues hollered out, extending his right arm out. The demons were a bit outside his range currently, that wouldn't take long.

(Discipline Maneuver for Taking Aim: +--++4 = 4 . How delightfully average.)
