I have to say I'm starting to love this man. Toxic Holocaust is awesome, and this is awesome. The man truly gets what made this music great back then and doesn't gently caress with it. I'm a fan of any band that makes the most out of basic stuff and Joel Grind has the touch.

The impression that I got is that for the most part, opening acts are bands that the members are fans of.

I've been waiting for a show anywhere within reasonable driving distance since I started listening to them around the end of 06. Anyone else planning on going to the Denver show?

Ideally yes but a lot of times it's just a matter of who's got an album they're trying to push, who wants to tour but can't headline on their own, who the label wants on the road, etc

Ya, Dark Castle slays. I need to check out their new album that came out last year or so. Heavy as gently caress.

As far as The Great Old Ones, the title track is really good but the rest of the album is lackluster. Maybe I've fallen out of love with the whole "post black" thing these days.

I'm being so false posting on SA during MDF but I figured I can't get much less false sporting no band shirt and mostly hanging around for the black metal guys for the rest of the day.

Did manage to get to the fest yesterday during rush hour DC traffic from Virginia after work to catch Negura Bunget. My MDF mission isn't quite complete until I've seen Tsjuder and Horna. Wondering if Horna is going to call it quits soon. Hopefully they play their old stuff off of Hiidentorni or if they're really attached to their newer stuff.

Kinda kicks rear end to be local for this fest.

MDF has been Memorial Day weekend for 10 years now. Only difference this year was almost literally 25%+ of the bands are black metal bands that nobody would have expected (I was even joking about what would happen if Black Witchery and Archgoat were going to show up a couple years ago as least-likely to show up).

In any case, Archgoat and Tsjuder had the best shows among the early/mid-evening black metal acts in that you could tell what they were playing fairly easily. Horna's guitar sound was far too muddled for me to make out that they were ending with Örkkivuorilta (one of my favorite black metal tracks possibly ever) until near the final break. I think Archgoat had the best control of their sound in terms of making sure it sounded closest to what they actually recorded as, which was goddamn badass. Tsjuder was kinda how I figured they would sound. They ended with Deathcrush of all songs.

Well I don't know if any of this is NEW, but it's all new to me in the last week and I won't guarantee it's up anyone's alley but mine since I haven't given them a lot of attention yet. Some of them I found on a blog that really likes demos so the skill/production are all over the place. Not all of this meets what you're after but it's all I've got.

Horn (folky, kinda like Sigtyr/Mistur/Drudkh without keyboards) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HJ6mPRZR-Q

Thantifaxath (Canadian, but there's some Windir/Emperor influences) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dRkTS34OugA

Vidsyn (Nocturno Culto and Hellhammer are in this but have nothing in common with mayhem or DT) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGgX8r83Oww

Tulus (no loving around norwegian BM, big fan so far) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpjOi_FMb-g

A Mr Bling recommendation from the metal thread, I loving love this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pY2zvMXKxH0

Even if you only want to see a quarter of the bands MDF is definitely worth going to. It's not just a show but it's a half week long party and you get to meet some cool people. Where else can you knock on doors of random hotel rooms and go party with strangers in a room littered with torn up Quran pages?

Aside from that, even if you wanted to see every band on the bill, you wouldn't have the energy to do so. There really needs to be some bands that you don't give a drat about so you can chill out, get food, shop for merch, or hang out with friends. 9-12 hours shows in the heat are taxing, especially when you mix that with alcohol.

So Austin Lunn of Panopticon has created coal-miner folk influenced black metal. It's a little clusterfucky, but it's neat to see elements of Americana seeping into extreme music. I like it.

This is actually really great. I love the flute's melody.

It reminds of an idea I had long ago about basically the same thing as this, except it would be about Dust Bowl-era farmers and migrant works, unfertile fields, and dying livestock, storms slowly draining all hope from the beaten-down laborers and leaving only bleak despair in their dessicated wake. It would be called "Great Depressive black metal".
