Yeah, when I said DC I guess I wasn't clear - not blaming it on Daimler, it was just a horrible carryover from Old Chrysler that it looks like Fiat is determined to kill. Which is great.

Was there a Lincoln version of the Escape? There were so many Ford/Mercury shares that I'm surprised they didn't toss out a few more Lincoln editions.

I've noticed that Sajeev's articles on TTAC tend to have good comments. For car sites, they're pretty mild. Most car sites seem to be full of Freepers, or their Japanese counterparts.

No they didn't. Rebadges really do not resonate with consumers. The Aviator was a commercial failure, and the Mountaineer did not sell to projection either.

There's definitely a right way to do re-badging, but neither of those examples were particularly good.

The Ford Edge / Lincoln MKX isn't bad, and the Acadia / Traverse / Outlook triplets are pretty well differentiated.

Being a Mopar guy I was leery of Fiat merging/owning Chrysler, but I think they actually "get it". They have not made one move that has led me to believe they intend to hurt the brand. In fact, they've improved it way more than I thought possible. Ram becoming its own brand, along with SRT becoming one, are seriously two amazing moves.

Fiat is so cool.

Sergio Marchionne is a pretty cool guy. He's also a supercar enthusiast and logs a lot of track time in Ferraris, Maseratis etc.

And he's lived in Canada for a number of years, so he's not completely foreign to the automotive needs and wants of North America. He's probably the best thing that has ever happened to Fiat.

He even moved his CEO office from the penthouse down to the engineering department to promote a more collegial style. That's a pretty cool move if you ask me.

Can't really blame them, as the costs to develop vs. potential sales aren't really there. There is a vocal group of people on the internet who want them, but the bulk of the country doesn't.

Same thing with Wagons. I love them, many others do, sad fact is the public wont buy them in enough quantities to justify the cost of R/D.

Or great example...Look at the Pontiac G8. The exact car so many of us were screaming for. Possibly the best car GM had made in decades, and they barely sold any.

Chrysler is still in its recovery period. I was shocked to hear they green-lighted a new Viper. We are getting an SRT Dart...Give them a few more years of success before they start trying the wacky stuff again.

The Jetta Sportwagen is pretty drat good and it really hardly sells (20k units per year). Only reason we get it at all is that it has extreme commonality with the Golf and is already produced in quantity for the European market. Wagons are such a non-starter and it's sad.

Yeah but the G8 didn't finally get around to America until our economy collapsed and no one was buying new cars. I saw a used one when I stopped by a Ford dealership and I swear I would have just bought it if the rear seats folded down. I really need a wagon for gear but I've always made due with cars because everyone's rear seats fold down so I can fit an 8' screen or a mountain bike in the car, but it looked like they sacrificed that ability just to have bucket rear seats that can't really fold. With all the badge engineering GM does, I was sad they don't have some low end version of the Cadillac cts wagon.

I swear I see a ton of the previous-generation Focus wagon. Maybe it's just around here but it seems that that car did pretty well.

And re: the G8, I tried to get my dad to consider it when he was car shopping a few years ago but it was roughly the same price as a Cadillac CTS. It had more power but suffered in pretty much every other department relative to the CTS.

Problem is, I think the '13 is getting a facelift of some sort. Also, the interior of the 2013 Fiesta ST concept is considerably different (like the new Taurus with its high-tech looking buttons) and I'm wondering if the production 2013 is getting the updated interior with (maybe) the new Ford touchscreen system.

Anybody know what changes the 2013 has?

I don't want a wagon, just a hatch back. Which would have really cost them less money based on the Giulietta the Dart's built off of.

Plus you can't say people don't like hatchs with the Focus/Fesita/Versa/Accent hatch all outselling their sedan rivals.

Made me think about effective range of these cars. Despite gearing and fuel efficient engines, range can't be great. Are fuel tanks maximally sized within safety standards? Or could they be bigger at the cost of lugging more weight around?

The tank size on a 2012 Mustang GT is 16 gallons, it gets 20 combined EPA MPG, and a range of 288 miles: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=31165

A small, self-selected, fuel-consumption aware data set that agrees with the 20 MPG figure from the EPA: https://www.fuelly.com/car/ford/mustang/2012/gas%20v8

You could stretch it out to 400 highway miles (= 16 gal * 26 hwy mi/gal), but if it's anything like my 2012 V6, the fuel nanies get really obnoxious with around 4 gallons in the tank, and the manual says: "Avoid running out of fuel because this situation may have an adverse effect on powertrain components."

In conclusion, fuel economy is a land of contrasts.
