You were born free, you got fucked out of half of it and you wave a flag celebrating it.
I haven't really indulged in a TV show in some time after going through five seasons of Dexter in a few weeks last year (right on time for the most recent season back then), but after an article on cracked.com I'll give Mad Men a chance to lure me in. I'm in dire need of a new show and working the late shift bi-weekly will leave enough time to spend with those, uhm... Mad Men.

I'm thinking about starting Life on Mars as a quick one-off before The Wire. The discussion of it in this thread appears to be limited to:

1. Do the UK version, not the US version. The UK version is better.
2. It's really great.

In spite of my love for New York City, and complete lack of knowledge of pretty much anything related to England, I'm leaning toward the UK version. Would this be what others suggest I do?

Never cross an introvert.
With The Daily Show/The Colbert Report off last week, and all the shows ending, I don't think I recorded anything new on my DVR over a two-day span. So, I turned to Star Trek: TNG on Netflix. I haven't watched it since it aired - and even then I didn't watch all of it.

Wesley doesn't seem as annoying as everyone makes him out to be, although I've only gotten through the first season.

Started on Mad Men back in october where I consumed two seasons in three weeks. Since then it has been lying dormant until maybe a month ago. Now I've finally fully caught up with the show.

In the beginning I thought the episodes were only losely connected in any meaningful way, but it became clear that they are instead skillfully woven together and the story of our characters unfold beautifully.
I think the decade and its portayal from an angle that isn't otherwise employed when dealing with that decade is part of what makes it refreshing. (non-hippie white middle class/rich people - who'd had thunk it)

I wish I could personally throttle everyone in this forum until they agree to watch Vampire Diaries. It's so good. Not even like guilty pleasure good, just straight up good.

I only ever heard of it from my girl friends so I sent it off automatically to the Twilight bin. So it's actually, genuinely good? How does it compare to True Blood (only vampire thing I watched, although only 2 or 3 seasons I think, before it started getting a bit ridiculous for my taste).

I'm on season 4 of Sons Of Anarchy. The Irish/they got my son storyline last season was boring as hell and the beginning of this one isn't shaping up well. The whole character twist they are pushing with Clay doesn't make much sense.

He's having trouble with his hands so he refuses to get surgery because he'll have to step down from being president but he is willing to sacrifice everybody in the club so he can get rich before dropping out.

And my dad is a biker who had the same issue. The recovery time from his surgery was only 2-3 weeks. You can go to jail for 14 months and still be president of the club but you can't take 3 weeks off to recover from surgery?

Universe got a lot better in the second half of its season. The initial anger and disappointment from Stargate fans poisoned any sort of recovery it could have had however. Don't get me wrong, the first few episodes were pretty drat bad but by the end, I felt myself liking Rush, Eli and the Captain a lot more.

I think my biggest problem with the show is how drama centric it is. Granted, there was a fair bit of that in Atlantis/Late SG-1 but nowhere near the amount present in Universe. I guess I just personally dislike it because the Stargate I grew to know and love was generally episodic and it seemed to have just the right amount of character development there also. This may sound retarded but I regard Universe really as just 'The OC in space' when comparing with the previous series.

The start of season 3 is one of the worst sections of the show. Lots of pointless wheel-spinning and a real lack of direction.

At some point during season 3 they got a definite end date, and it gave the writers a bit of focus. Seasons 4 and 5 have some relatively self contained arcs (actually getting off the island and getting back to the future), and were my favourite seasons of the show. I think the writers' strike actually helped the show too; Season 4 was made shorter by chopping out a lot of the padding.

So I'd say either stop now, or stick it out.

I would classify SG1/Atlantis as Scifi/Action/Adventure.
Stargate Universe would be Scifi/Drama.

There's nothing wrong with that if you enjoy that kind of show. I think the producers pretty much stated that there's going to be a huge tonal shift. Personally, I was tired of the 15 seasons of SG1/A formula, so Universe was a welcomed change.

3rd Rock From The Sun.

I didn't watch it religiously when it first ran, but I started catching reruns and god drat it made me so nostalgic that I just kept on watching.

There's something so funny about the outrageousness of the comedy that completely hits home with me. The humour is really hard to place. It's really base and crude by sitcom standards, very slapstick. Not performed to perfection like NewsRadio did it, but the premise allows for some really ridiculous comedy that wouldn't really fly in any other setting.

I don't think there's any good way to articulate it. It's just funny to me, even when the gags are groaners. I find myself laughing at things I wouldn't in any other show.

It didn't find its rhythm for a few episodes, but I think by the middle to late 1st season it was chugging along on all cylinders.

Love it!

I love 3rd Rock. John Lithgow plays Dick Solomon in such a wonderfully over-the-top manner it's impossible not to get drawn in. Also, it is of course cool to get a look at an early Joseph Gordon-Levitt honing his acting chops.

I really like the Christmas and dream-sequence episodes in S2, and the tax episode in S4.

Powered through both seasons of Boardwalk Empire over the past week or so. First season was drat good, albeit somewhat predictable when it came to the overall character arcs. Season 2, though, now THAT'S a season of television. Sometimes it gets a little obvious with the whole "look! this trivial line of dialogue has another meaning relating to the characters in some way!" thing, but it's drat well-shot and acted, the dialogue is tremendous, and it always pulls off the big scenes superbly. Also Michael Shannon is so good ungh

I just finished Lost recently for the first time so I know how you feel.

Season 3, in my opinion, is the worst season. They split the cast, ruin the mystery of The Others, the island starts feeling more like a small country than a small island with how many secret hatches and somehow well hidden neighborhoods surrounded on all sides by sonic fences, and there are few moments that actually feel like they're progressing towards something definite.

Season 5, however, is my second favorite after 2. So there's that to look forward to.

I think that's part of the reason I liked Universe so much. It was a lot closer in tone to the movie than even SG1 was, and I found it refreshing.

That show was amazing and depressing as gently caress sometimes. I started watching it on a Thursday night and was done with it Saturday night I believe (it's been a few years since I watched it, but I powered through it and loved it).

Thanks to the new goon thread that has basically every show listed, I saw some I never heard of and picked those up. So far I've finished Happy Endings which was surprisingly good. Almost done with Misfits - 5 or 6 episodes left in season 3 and also really good and the kind of dark humor I like. Going through Coupling which, despite the laugh track, is pretty hilarious.

Once these are done, I will be starting Nikita and be looking for more shows after that to watch.

I really liked SG-U and got so sick of everyone that disliked it saying how boring and over-trodden the whole "dark dramatic sci-fi" angle was, and that they were just "copying BSG". To my knowlege, BSG was the only dark dramatic sci-fi show of that nature around. One show. Yeah really overdone genre, that, and the fact it influenced SG-U was a great thing to me, as a fan of BSG. It filled the hole that BSG left behind.

I was sad when I got to the end of the 2nd season, by whichtime it had found its feet, fleshed out characters, scrapped most of the annoying things about the 1st season and gotten really great, and I knew there would never be any more. Although it wasn't strictly speaking a cliffhanger, I really wanted to see what happened next. Not only that, it flopping like it did could well discourage that style of sci-fi from being done for a good long while. A grand shame all around.
