I bought a (new) album yesterday and it doesn't fit on the spindle of my turntable. The hole is slightly too small. Is this a defect with the record, or could it just be because my turntable is old? I've only bought a few new albums, but they all fit fine. Should I return it, or is there a way I can safely bore out the hole?

Not uncommon, there's a lot of manufacturing variables and slight spindle variations. I usually just take the end of a pocket knife or one arm of a small pair of scissors and rotate it inside the hole a couple of times. Works fine, no harm done.

I've bored out the hole without trouble when I had the same problem, although you might want to just trade it in for another copy if you're planning on selling it down the line.

Yeah, you just take a pencil and put it in the hole, turn it around, and push it in and out a few times, and hopefully, you'll get the hole big enough that you can get it on the spindle. Of course, when I give these directions, it always helps to have a little bit of context.

Any good turntable will have a rotating spindle, I usually just hold the record still and it will work it's way on pretty easily.

Stars Of The Lid - The Ballasted Orchestra is up for 80 bucks and I'm on the fence about it. It's been one of my holy grails and hasn't been in print forever, even though Kranky is usually good about that. Does it seem like a good buy, or what?

Thought I'd let ya'll know that I've put a post selling a sizable chunk of my vinyl collection of in SA Mart. Some quality stuff over there, like some Beatles, Bowie, Zappa, Dylan, and other assorted oddities. If you're in the market, I'm going to give some great deals to goons! For some content, that SEGA vinyl is totally dope. I've been trying to find it for some time! Fine time I picked to take a break from record buying. Wasn't that a promo of some kind?

Discogs said it was given as a pre-order bonus for the game of the same name in Australia and New Zealand. Looks cool, I remember hearing about it but never following up, now that I'm in the vinyl buying market I really wish I had paid closer attention.

Recently I had a DJ buddy of mine give me all of his vinyl, which brings me to about fifteen thousand records total. Now I need a way to catalog them. I've started logging them into Discogs and using the 'folder' column to put descriptors like 'Shelf 1' and 'Box 002' but am wondering, before I get too deep into this, if I am going about it the right way. I'm only about 700 releases in and don't want to get halfway done before I find something that will make life easier. Any suggestions?

Awesome, I just picked up the two Chromatics LPs and the sampler CD for $25 w/ shipping to Canada. Been digging the Chromatics since I heard them on the Drive soundtrack. I've got to say that soundtrack has introduced me into a bunch of really new sounds lately.

Hot Topic will apparently be stocking the In/Casino/Out splatter versions as well for 16.99. It's a terrible store to walk in to, but they have been doing some excellent work with records lately, and way cheaper than paying for merchnow's shipping and associated bullshit.

I hit up a few yard sales today. I picked up a lot of LPs for dirt cheap (a bunch of Zep, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, etc.) that aren't really worth photographing because whatever, every yard sale record haul worth looking at twice would probably have them. But there were some picture-worthy finds:   The White Album is a reissue (and not really worth photographing, but whatever- I got it for 5 bucks and it sounds awesome after a good brushing.) That copy of Beggars Banquet is a first-issue and it looks and sounds fantastic. I also picked up relatively nice copies of Let it Bleed and Sticky Fingers- complete with crusty-as-hell zipper.   All of the albums pictured (aside from the White Album, and the sticker on the Specials LP) are in really good-to-impeccable shape.  To everybody who paid $30+ for a pink EVOL reissue a couple of months ago: The pristine 1986 first-run copy I got for $15 would like you to go gently caress yourselves.

It's really annoying too, because the guy selling them didn't use the same (proper) labels that an actual record store would use, so the ones I've tried removing have been an absolute bitch to get off cleanly. They're the sort of thing you might find on glassware, and they sure as hell weren't made for paperboard. He had also run all ~300 of the records he was selling through discogs and had a fat stack of printouts with him to haggle with. (I've posted plenty of record store finds in this very thread before. I have absolutely no reason to lie about where I find my LPs).

I've never found a single worthwhile record at a yard sale, ever. Nevermind a yard sale that has all that stuff. I can't even find Smiths albums in record shops nevermind loving yard sales. Also those Sonic Youth reissues are well worth the money. Analog remasters sourced from the original tapes are nothing to scoff at.

Currently being in southwestern Connecticut might have something to do with it, but it's bizarre luck. Of the two yard sales I hit today, one had nothing but Robert Goulet and Herb Alpert/Tijuana Brass. The other happened to be...umm...much better. And I wasn't scoffing at the reissues. Lord knows a quality reissue is a great thing, especially if it's fairly priced and maybe has some extra goodies the original didn't. I was merely commenting on the superiority of my find. Every time I find LPs at a garage sale (which is surprisingly uncommon itself), the person has no idea what they're worth, and that's usually a bad thing. Last week I stopped at a few garage sales and found one batch of records. The guy was selling them for $5 a piece, and it was all garbage that nobody would pay $1 for. I've had much better luck at thrift stores because at least you know they're going to price them around $1 regardless of quality, you just have to get lucky and get to the new ones right after they're put out for sale. Garage sales can be fun though. I've only bought stuff from one guy yet this summer, a bunch of 80s pop rock (Heart, Quarterflash, etc) for 10 cents each. Usually the people are happy to make conversation too since you're buying the albums from their childhood.
