There's no merit in shock value for shock alone; shock value's got to have a point or else it's just juvenile poo poo. Old-school industrial was often shocking, but there was a message and a point behind it, such as Skinny Puppy trying to draw attention to animal rights issues. Wallowing in poo poo for the sake of wallowing in poo poo is junior high school.

Laibach will always have been the band that did it best.

The actual quote was:

Thomas Rainer posted:

I think politics have nothing to do with music. Politics are something everyone has to do in private. I vote for a party in a booth, it’s your private thing. Music should not be used as a vehicle for political beliefs, in any way, left, right, or whatever.

What a ridiculous and obtuse position. Although I guess he'd shy away from taking responsibility for having anything as extreme as a position.

Political expression through art is an extremely important facet of culture. Does Rainer think Picasso, Orwell, Chuck D and Joan Baez are a bunch of assholes for using art as a political vehicle?

I should stop getting mad, as he's obviously just a huge idiot with no ambition.

It reminds me of video game developers who make FPS games about shooting brown people in the middle east; they're always quick to disavow any political statement. I don't know if it's more naivety or cowardice, but just claiming to be apolitical doesn't take your work out of the context of, you know, the world into which you release it.

The rebuttal to "Andy's a racist" is "Andy's not a racist", and that isn't a debate that interests me. The rebuttal to "Andy is using a flag that has been flown by the confederacy, the dixiecrats and the kkk" is the one I was interested in starting a conversation about.
Agree with this.

:wumpscut: did it first.

I picked up Skinny Puppy's new live album today. Coming from someone who doesn't like most live albums, it's uh, pretty much what I expected. About half the tracks Ogre seems like he's just singing over a ripped album instrumental track. The other half of the tracks feel more like they are being played, but none of them really mix up the songs too much. I think it's definitely a better live album than Doomsday though.

I don't get too excited over live albums. I'll probably check it out at some point, if only for "Assimilate" and "Addiction." "Hatekill" was never a huge favorite of mine. Honestly, I'd probably be more interested if a Live DVD was coupled with the release.

Oh well, maybe they'll get around to touring the pretty OK HandOver in the fall.

I really dig live industrial albums for some reason. It's the whole transition to a live performance for me I suppose. I've always enjoyed the old Ministry (before they became a thrash band) bootlegs too. KMFDM w/ PIG Sturm & Drang live album from the 2002 tour was a gem for me. I still have the audio of the Greater Wrong of the Right LIVE DVD as well.

I picked up Bootlegged, Broke, and In Solvent Seas album too. Already listened to it 3 times and have enjoyed it immensely. Can anyone recommend some other know live performances from other industrial artist of a similar vein?

Not really the same type of music, but since there's a lot of fan overlap anyway, I'll point out that the Neubauten album 9-15-2000, Brussels is killer. Excellent recording quality and fantastic performances.

Nothing beats actually being there and seeing them perform, but if you like live albums, that's a great one.

for me its the definitive modern synthpop album. There's more than enough audible MIAB DNA to please any fan with even a passing curiosity about Stefan's side project.

I think I mentioned it earlier in this thread, but if you can find a copy of the Skinny Puppy bootleg live album Fractal Zoom, it's pretty awesome. There aren't any crowd sounds or anything mixed in because it is a straight rip from the mixing board of one of their older shows, but all the tracks have a lot of energy. Also, it sounds like the whole thing was sped up to fit it on a tape or something, so every song has a really fast tempo.

Yeah. Some people aren't too happy with that. My sister and I debated saying something to a friend when they first posted it on FB (before the news got out) and whether we should say something. But for what it's worth, Jamie did put that out for the public. It is what it is, but drat.

Still in shock after hearing about Jamie, I keep feeling like I'm going to wake up and just find out it was just a nightmare or something. He was a great guy, and while I haven't kept in touch with him in recent years as much as I have in the past, I still feel like we have a lifetime of great memories together. He would do anything for anybody, and I have never met a better sound guy.

EDIT: Thankfully, that Steve Dahl link is 404ing now, too. I thought it was pretty tasteless of them to re-post the picture. Even more tasteless when they had the original headline: "The Public Suicide of Acumen's Jamie Duffy" (later just changed to "RIP Jamie Duffy").

Anyway, here's a great write up about Jamie.
