I'm a new convert as well, only having seriously delved into their material about 5 or six months ago. For the life of me I can't find anything else that sounds quite like them. They are magic. There's a quality to their music that actually puts me places nostalgically despite not having listened to those songs at that time, if that makes any sense. The tone of the trailer video puts me somewhere in my youth that is both exhilarating and sad. I had goosebumps and a lump in my throat over the course of a stupid minute long teaser. Powerful stuff. I've really been digging this group called Riding the Diplodoc. They're some russian group that somehow managed to get some great recordings even though they aren't signed to a record label and there's really not anything about them on the internet. The time I saw them play Highly Refined Pirates live (I've seen them live 4x and I think this was #3), there was this dude standing next to me who yelled out "HEY IS THAT A NINJA UP THERE" really loudly every time there was a brief moment of them not playing, whether it was during a break in a song or between songs. We were standing front row, so he was yelling it like right in their faces. They obviously heard him but just weren't going to play it, and yet he wouldn't stop throughout the entire show. He was being kind of an obnoxious douche about it. What was worse is that I saw the setlist before the show and knew it wasn't on there and they weren't going to play it, so it got especially grating after like the 5th time he yelled it

I wavered between posting this in the Scenecore thread or the Math Rock thread, but I think they belong here. The new Icarus the Owl album, Love Always, Leviathan is absolutely absurd, in an awesome way. It's just about what I've been expecting. Minus the Bear has been moving towards that boring homogenized pop style for like three albums. I'm a little disappointed they're not innovating or whatever, but I can't say I'm surprised.

I don't know, I finally got a chance to listen to it, and the song got my feet tapping like they always do. They've definitely changed over the years, some would say for the worse, but I'd like to think every band's sound changes a bit over the span of 6 albums. It sounds distinctly like Minus The Bear despite being different from their earlier stuff. We'll see how it holds up after the album comes out and I obsessively listen to it 50 times.

Listening to it again, the guitars are obviously fuzzed out, and it sounds like a wah pedal is getting used among some other effects. I'd argue that if you took those effects away, the playing style is still very similar. I could see a lot of the riffs and hooks being used clean or acoustic if needed. All the odd start/stops are there. I dunno, I don't hate it. I should say that I don't hate Omni as much as most fans do. That might help put my opinion in perspective.

Oh man that song is so loving good. Can't wait for that new album. Lines across maps are really good as suggested above. Their newest ep is on spotify if anyone's interested. Found a band called Proceed and they're pretty cool. How about Console Warriors? They've been described as a sort of Two Door Cinema Club and Minus the Bear cross. People who like Bloc Party and MtB tend to like them a lot. They have a mathrocky sound with some interesting tempo changes and some great guitar and drum complexities but they also have that catchy indie dance beat going on. They've recently been stuck in my head quite a lot as Minus the Bear is one of my all-time favourite bands. They're really young, but I think they're very talented and creative and they put a lot of work into their music so I want to support their efforts. Personally, I am in two minds with respect to Mathcore. Protest the Hero sits comfortably in my Top 10 bands, however little else within the genre is that appealing. It suffers from the same troubles that plague Prog Rock or Prog Metal in that they are taking a conventional element of music, in this case consistent time signature, pitch etc, and mixing it up. This can work effectively, and create a great dynamic and sound, however, like the music itself, success here is rather sporadic. Also, I would call Protest the Hero a prog metal band before I'd call them mathcore. anyways, is anyone else creaming their pants in anticipation of Rolo Tomassi's third? First lets assume that Protest the Hero is mathcore. The OP seems to think so, and I am inclined to agree. Genre seems to be an ever-shifting construct, but regardless Protest the Hero has those elements that define mathcore. So for the purpose of the conversation, they will be defined as such. Mathcore is a messy genre. Music often has a set formula: this beat, at this tempo, with this pitch and this volume. Consistent, uniform, palatable. But many artists try to break away from this formula. Prog and mathcore are good examples of deviation from the expected. The danger here is changing too much or too drastically. A song can easily degrade into a messy chaos of noise and discomfort. You have shifting signatures, tempo changes and clashing vocal pitch all melded together in a violent assault of sound. It takes true skill to change the fundamentals of music to such a great degree, and still please the listener. Whenever I listen to a new genre of music, I inevitably filter through a giant heap of trash until I find those few diamonds that match all my preferences. No genre is exempt from this, not even metal, that musical force which drives much of my existence. But it seems that the trash pile is so much larger when I come to mathcore, and the diamonds much harder to find. As always, personal preference drives what we enjoy listening to. And whilst mathcore will never be my favourite genre, it does have some saving graces.

You might like Between The Buried and Me at that point. They've got parts where they break into really mathy sounding stuff, but they're pretty solidly Prog Hardcore a lot of the time.

Stream Minus The Bear's new album Infinity Overhead for the next 24 hours at their website: http://minusthebear.com/ It's...alright. There's Diamond Lightning, which is outstanding. And "Empty Party Room" which is Minus The Bear's take on Pinback's Non-Photo Blue. Not that this one is a great song, but I thought that was interesting. More interesting than the rest, which are filled with decent parts that are merely decent. Nothing mindblowing here. There are a few really cool guitar parts here and there, but the album isn't chock full of them like it could (should) be. There aren't more flat out bad pop-punk ripoff songs like Lonely Gun, fortunately, but almost all of the songs on this one are forgettable. Can't see myself feeling the desire to listen to any of them again except for those 2 I mentioned by name. edit: Okay, what the gently caress is this. Cold Company sounds like something straight off Planet Of Ice and it rules. Why did they make the last track really good but most of the ones leading up to it not so good? I feel like if the whole album sounded like this, it would've been way better and much more memorable. edit2: Oops, Non-Photo Blue by Pinback. Not AFK. I really like the album on first listen. They just have an enjoyable sound that just makes me feel good. Lies and Eyes, Toska, and Heaven is a Ghost Town are early favorites. Just now listening to Cold Company and really digging this, too. Not their best work, but certainly not bad at all. Like I said, their overall sound is enjoyable, even if I don't love certain tracks. Can't wait to have an actual copy of this and listen over good speakers.
