When people do this upgrade, do they generally replace the internal HDD or the optical drive? I'd much rather do the latter, if it's possible, for obvious reasons.

You will want to leave the platter hd in or the fans go out of control. Basically there's a third sata port for it you use and tape it to the back of your optical drive.

I don't really know much about the technical aspects of the retina display in the new MBPR, but is it feasible that Apple could bring such a display to the Air any time soon? I really like the form factor of the air and from the reviews of the 15in MBPR, the display is a game-changer. Would the Air run poorly with 4x the pixels and integrated graphics? (I know it's speculation, but I'm trying to convince myself to wait for the retina MBAs if they're ever going to come).

I've also heard rumors of the MBPR 13in shipping in the fall, which would probably be the best solution for me. I'm looking for something to replace my desktop/laptop combo, but I also would like to keep the size down to 13in. A 13in MBPR with 2 thunderbolt ports and a sub-$2000 price would be a dream come true...

So, not sure if it'll help anyone in this thread or not, but to get a thunderbolt PCIe card to show up in bootcamp you need to do a cold boot on external power. Chaos with resources occurs otherwise.

As in, there's room for both the optical drive and the SSD inside the case? If so, that's cool... I assumed people were needing to rip out the optical drives to make space, not to mention for the SATA cable.

You can see the SSD just to the left of the HD

There's a script you can run that manually sets the fan speed if you decided to remove or upgrade the HD and use one that doesn't have the temperature sensor.

I went to see the retina MacBook after I posted all these words. Holy poo poo once I saw the display I couldn't unsee it. The dock just looks so crisp, it made the 13in air look blurry. Same thing with the new iPad vs the iPad 2. Its pretty hilarious how bad non-retina images look though. I opened up numbers and all the built-in images looked terrible. Definitely going to wait for the 13in MBPR. The display is amazing and hopefully by October everything will be properly optimized, and the first-gen issues will be ironed out (if there are any?)

For 24" you may want to look at HP. I have these: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/hp_zr2440w.htm

It has a DP in so no need to get a converter from a Mac. Don't get the 27" version though. It's awful. Go Dell or Apple for 27".

Considering a 13" MBA, only need the basic storage and processor. Can anyone give me acompelling reason to bump up the RAM to 8gb? I don't intend to do any serious gaming or virtualization, and this is definitely a secondary machine (I have a powerful desktop for those things).

4 GB is going to be just fine for what you do. I have a Mac Mini that I put in my own 8 GB in and I'm only using 25% of it at any time.

I thought about posting this in the Haus of Tech Support, but it seems more relevant to this thread, so I'll try here first to see if anybody has had a similar problem.

My dad purchased a Retina Macbook Pro 15" yesterday and is having a problem with iPhoto. He did a Time Machine restore, which went off without a hitch (so far as we can tell).

He has about 2k or 3k images, and upon launching iPhoto, he was prompted to upgrade his thumbnails to support the Retina display.

About half of his images were successfully converted. The other half now don't show thumbnails at all, and opening those blank-thumbnail images results in the Triangle-! symbol, rather than in the picture itself.

He's spent about 2 hours on the phone with Apple and is now talking to a "Senior iPhoto Specialist" about the issue. As a side note, it's been really cool how the issue has been elevated. He's been transferred three times to progressively more specialized folks.

There are other weird issues too -- like his library doubled in size, both in terms of the number of reported images and the total size of his photo library as reported by Apple-About This Mac.

99% of his images are JPEGs -- very few RAWS -- as he usually shoots with his Nikon SLR in Auto mode. That's just the kind of user he is.

I'm not looking for a resolution to this problem here. I'm just wondering if anybody else has experienced this same problem.

Edit: leaving this post here, but decided this post was more relevant to the software thread.

My 13" MPA showed up this morning and I feel kind of foolish for bothering with the 8GB ram upgrade. I'm never going to be running intense enough applications to use it up, but its only a $90 upgrade so I'm exactly kicking myself over the purchase.

You could pretty much run a Windows VM at all times and throw it 4GB of RAM, and have plenty left-over, if that makes you feel better.

I'm thinking the same thing, bumping to 8GB involves $90+tax as well as incurring a wait-time while I wait for the unit to ship to me/store.

Considering what I'll be using it for is primarily taking notes in class, as well as couch-surfing, website updates, and light gaming when I'm out (again, I have a main desktop for the heavy gaming and "serious" computing).

Anyway, sounds good. I'm actually looking forward to bringing a Mac back into my computing workflow (I always enjoyed OSX for laptops, and Macs famously have the best trackpads in the business).

It was patched for LAA/PAE at 1.3.10 and so can use 4GB all by itself, actually. 2GB is the maximum for 32-bit software without LAA/PAE (almost all games and 32-bit software), and 4GB is the limit for 32-bit software with LAA/PAE support (Skyrim, 32-bit Adobe software, maybe a few other things).

Not to mention that cross-platform titles are a bad example to begin with because their engines are still designed for systems with 512 MB of shared video and system RAM.

Also Skyrim's engine is a gigantic turd.

I'm thinking of getting a GeForce 580 for my mac pro since I've been noticing my 5770 struggling with 2569*1440 gaming. Is this the right thread to ask about card recommendations, or should I use the hackintosh thread?

Get a GeForce 670 instead. A 580 would have to pretty much be the one and only expansion card in order not to overtax the power supply. A 670 is faster and quieter and priced similarly anyway.

I know people have definitely used them in the Hack thread.

I had last year's model with 4 Gb, and it was more than enough, especially for web development. That said, I decided to go with 8 just in the event that I wanted to do virtualization instead of Boot Camp. But primarily it was to help future-proof the MBA for OSs beyond Mountain Lion.

Hmm, it's looking like "wait for ML, then buy a 680" is a good option. I'd get a 670 but apparently it has issues with OpenCL.

Last I heard (which was a while ago so things may have changed) Windows sort of worked just by virtue of seeing TB as a regular PCIe bus, while the Mac I guess needs some extra support since it'd see it as a TB device. I figure the ability to hot plug TB devices is what complicates it a bit.
