Found this in another thread some time ago, Skyrim's lead designer boasting about how good the game is that he made interspersed with clips of bugs, all set on In The Halls of the Mountain King. It's amazing.

Sort of. There are two factors at play:

1. The increased processing power of PCs and reverse-engineering has allowed people to build emulators with fully-controllable variables, allowing people to do things like the Super Mario 2 video where they intentionally sabotage the game's memory. The internet allowing collaboration on such projects has helped leaps and bounds, too.

2. This was touched on in the FF6 breaking LP: Cartridge storage sizes in the NES and SNES generation of games were incredibly limited, as were the resources of companies (most games today have more people doing the voices than there were working on the entire game back then), to the point where there weren't really any code checks for unexpected scenarios in games. Super Mario World is only half a megabyte in size, and even the biggest SNES game released in North America was only 4 megabytes.

Most of the recent generation of games, on the other hand, have code checks up the wazoo in the form of anti-piracy code and other things. This is due in part to the backlash from SimCopter's ending and GTA San Andreas' Hot Coffee scandal, so now game makers lock everything down very carefully (a friend of mine used to work for EA, and told me "you wouldn't believe the NDAs that I had to sign").

It's why none of the recent consoles have a Gameshark or equivalent, nor many options in the third-party controller department. Even if you could code one, odds are good that most attempts at hacking it to "see what crazy things would happen" would instead crash the game. The lack of checks back in those days resulted in the "gently caress it, we'll do it live" just-load-any-data-I-don't-care situations from that Mario 2 vid.

I could be mistaken, but I think most recent game glitches like the spinning heads in Gamebryo-based games and the weird hybrid creatures in Red Dead Redemption are a side effect of error correction attempts when reading game data straight from disc; I don't think they happen on PC or in situations where the game is running from the hard drive, and will probably happen less if the next generation of consoles installs the game code to the built-in hard drive, where read errors are far less likely. Having said that, no amount of playtesting will find every bug in a game, no matter how simple. Online communities like the tool-assisted speedrunners continue to find bugs and exploits in Super Mario 1 and the rest of the "classic" console games to this day.

It's by the fantastic Rocketlex. :)

My favorite glitch I unfortunately don't have a video of, but one day after playing Red Dead Redemption for a long, long time, my PS3 started to overheat and things got weird. There were a ton of bugs and glitches all over the place, but the most memorable was when I went to duel that Mexican Army captain in the attack on Escalera. The pre-duel cutscene played out same as always, but once the actual shoot-out started, there were two of me. One standing in the foreground to the left like always, and another behind the captain, also in the "hand hovering over holstered revolver" dueling pose, and the captain was facing him, with his back turned to me! I actually just let him win instead of shooting him in the back because I was curious what would have happened if he shot my clone. Unfortunately that was an end to the fun, because shooting the copy counted as me dying in the duel and reloading my last save.

For actual images instead of just :words:, sometimes in the Sims babies come out...wrong.

There's a bug in Oblivion that I believe is related. If there's a corpse in an open doorway and you close the door, the body goes nuts. It also works with furniture. Some problem with object collision if I remember right.

Doing it through an emulator? That's relatively recent. The principle? That goes at least as far back as the Atari 2600:

Unfortunately no video, but NFL '95 on the Genesis could be exploited to hell in 2-player coop mainly because the second player could press C to dive downfield before the snap and would not get called offsides. Cue hilarity like catching your own kickoffs, or throwing bombs downfield the instant the ball is snapped.

For extra hilarity, if the second player contacted a player on the other team while diving, the other team would get a 5 yard encroachment penalty.

That's a "make-your-own" type of fighting game, I want to say it's just called "Fighter Maker". In any case, it didn't really care what kinds of animations you made, and so there you go.

It's fighter maker. A game with the promise of making your own fighter down to their movements and animations. Which almost nobody did because that is both really tedious and the in game system was absolutely atrocious. Don't want to use the default? Hope you like making what was effectively stop motion slides for each of the parts of the punch. The best part was the animation didn't have to have any correlation to the move itself so you could make a self inflicted crotch punch a full-screen super for instant KOs.

I imagine it is the physics engine that bugs out because there is a layer of collision between the ground and the top floor which the ragdoll falls through.

It also happens often if you kill people with grenades because that pushes them below a collision layer in the map, this makes them bug the gently caress out right below the textures or right above them.
Another example is in skyrim:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oso_mmhvm-Y

The engine is a mess and I hope they make something new for the next Fallout/TES game since it is really showing its age.

I wish I could find the old Postal 2 screenshot collection I had because this poo poo happened all the time. I was pushing around a cardboard box and it fell through the floor. I threw a grenade at a counter and one of the cigarette packs got stuck in the wall, so I kicked it and it disappeared, only for me to later pick it up out of the other side of the wall. Ragdolls got stuck in floors constantly. I also found a sewer-grate sized hole in a street and moved over it and promptly fell out of the map.
