I finally started with the series (thanks to the Infinite Space LP!) and I'm having a good time - some aspects of the series become hilarious if you're from a German speaking country (I'm looking at YOU, intro screen!) However, sometimes I have to remind myself that the focus of the series is being "War and Peace" in space - it helps with things like the role of women and the often very sketchy strategies used for dramatic effect. For example, I finished episode 20 now and I was quite dissatisfied when watching the way they portrayed the strategies used in the battle with Staaden. Staaden's fleet must have been farting around for hours while the enemy destroyed his other fleet and flew all the way around the minefield to attack him from behind. It's the same with the way they decide to take the fortress of Rentenberg: Stealthily moving dozens of ships into the outer parts of the enemy base sound like a good idea, but the way they handeled the rest was quite unpleasant, with the axe fighting and the great "trap" for Lord Ovlesser (angry red haired dude) - a hole in the ground, 20 metres from where that guy had been standing for hours, really? When and where did they dig it? The could as well have used the weapons of the ships which are inside the base - the loss of life from the destruction did not seem to be an important factor, as it's mentioned that every rebel soldier in Rentenberg but Ovlesser gets executed (perhaps a mistranslation?) I intellectually understand that the main point they want to convey is more personal/political (Staaden being surrounded by young red-headed idiots, Ovlesser has to be captured so they can demonstrate what a tool von Braunschweig is), but I hope it won't be as bad as this in future episodes, because I really enjoy the space battles per se (even if ships in the future seem to be made from wet paper). edit: To clarify: I'm not offended if a show stretches the technological and logistical possibilities of its setting in order to make an entertaining/interesting point, I just rapidly start to loose the joy from watching it if things just continually happen like that. Just finished episode 23, The civil war for the empire ended with quite a bang. Lohengramm just allowed Braunschweig's nuclear bombing of Westerland! Or at least he did not act soon enough to prevent it. The scenes on the planet just before the bombing were great:  "Granddad, what are we doing now that we are finally free from the oppressors? : "Well, there's Count von Lohengramm, he is known as a friend of the people. I'm just rewatching this now, and I want to know what idiot granted Laap the approval to set up Phezzan as a mostly-independant nation-state with the power to forbid Imperial passage through the Corridor. What the hell kind of leverage did he HAVE on them!?

So having Phezan as a middleman removes any moral questions of collusion from it, whilst still gaining the economic benefits of free trade. When Longrehan gets in of course he pretty much trashes the old power structure bringing everything except regional power (which he more or less democratizes) under his direct command, and this allows him to integrate his economic and strategic objectives and thus decide "gently caress phezan". Of course the phezani having seemingly endless wads of cash to bribe and blackmail with certainly seem to have a hand in all this too. Yeah that seems about closer to what should be expected. At least it could be worse, and at least it doesn't come with a hug pillow? I don't know if I could take the plunge for the entire thing but I'd gladly buy one of the boxes just to support it if it came out over here.

Jumping around to a couple of scenes, it looks like the backgrounds tend to look better (to me at least) in the QTS version, but anything with motion looks better in the R-R version. QTS has a lot of strange artifacts along the outlines during these parts.

Yoshiki Tanaka has 11 novel series with Ryoko Yakushiji's Strange Case Files getting it's ninth volume just last month. LoGH being the only one with its main story finished.
