So basically people disagreeing with you are at fault.

Also, glad to see you insulted that guy for using a strawman, then used a strawman.

I finally started with the series (thanks to the Infinite Space LP!) and I'm having a good time - some aspects of the series become hilarious if you're from a German speaking country (I'm looking at YOU, intro screen!)

However, sometimes I have to remind myself that the focus of the series is being "War and Peace" in space - it helps with things like the role of women and the often very sketchy strategies used for dramatic effect.

For example, I finished episode 20 now and I was quite dissatisfied when watching the way they portrayed the strategies used in the battle with Staaden. Staaden's fleet must have been farting around for hours while the enemy destroyed his other fleet and flew all the way around the minefield to attack him from behind.
It's the same with the way they decide to take the fortress of Rentenberg: Stealthily moving dozens of ships into the outer parts of the enemy base sound like a good idea, but the way they handeled the rest was quite unpleasant, with the axe fighting and the great "trap" for Lord Ovlesser (angry red haired dude) - a hole in the ground, 20 metres from where that guy had been standing for hours, really? When and where did they dig it?
The could as well have used the weapons of the ships which are inside the base - the loss of life from the destruction did not seem to be an important factor, as it's mentioned that every rebel soldier in Rentenberg but Ovlesser gets executed (perhaps a mistranslation?)

I intellectually understand that the main point they want to convey is more personal/political (Staaden being surrounded by young red-headed idiots, Ovlesser has to be captured so they can demonstrate what a tool von Braunschweig is), but I hope it won't be as bad as this in future episodes, because I really enjoy the space battles per se (even if ships in the future seem to be made from wet paper).

edit:
To clarify: I'm not offended if a show stretches the technological and logistical possibilities of its setting in order to make an entertaining/interesting point, I just rapidly start to loose the joy from watching it if things just continually happen like that.

Fairly reasonable criticism.

First of all, most of this stuff does get alleviated following the end of the first season (ie, after episode 25 or so). By most, I mean Schenkopp remains a Level 5 Fighter.

The military tactics never get entirely down to earth, but they do cut down on the more questionable elements that you cited.

However, the part where Ovlesser falls in the hole is my favourite part precisely because of how absurd it is.

On another note, is it just me, or is Heinessenpolis the worst place to live ever? It seems that any time thousands of civilians die at once, it happens there. I rewatched 10 or so episodes yesterday, and there were still multiple instances of that happening. You almost have to wonder how many civilians could possibly live there.

Just finished episode 23, The civil war for the empire ended with quite a bang.

Lohengramm just allowed Braunschweig's nuclear bombing of Westerland! Or at least he did not act soon enough to prevent it. The scenes on the planet just before the bombing were great:

Judging by the history episode focused on Kaisers Past I kind of think there was no end of scandal to be exploiting the monarchy by, if you could get away with it.

I'd assume that it was just understood that economically there was more to be gained by having a trading point between the empire and the free planets than screwing that up by stuffing it full of dopey warships. The empire seems to have different locus's of power, that have their own interests and sort of kind of coalese under the kaisers. The armed forces are pretty much your standard imperial army, its loyal to the kaiser but pursues its own interests as well, the nobles have their own little kingdoms and mainly interact on a decadent and ultimately silly powerplay level in the court, and the executive (prime-minister and so on) seem mostly interessted in economics.

So I'd guess previous prime-ministers would have realised that having a way to sell and buy from the free planets without directly engaging in any sort of traitorous *direct* contact was preferable to either straight up dealing with the FPA or alternatively loving up trade and business altogether by not trading at all. So having Phezan as a middleman removes any moral questions of collusion from it, whilst still gaining the economic benefits of free trade. And I guess the kaiser, with the prime-minister in his ear, would have consented despite whatever objections the armed forces might have.

When Longrehan gets in of course he pretty much trashes the old power structure bringing everything except regional power (which he more or less democratizes) under his direct command, and this allows him to integrate his economic and strategic objectives and thus decide "gently caress phezan".

Of course the phezani having seemingly endless wads of cash to bribe and blackmail with certainly seem to have a hand in all this too. Those who dissent to the arangement dont seem to hang around long.

No, they are, but the Japanese BD releases are literally like 50x the cost of these French releases, so in terms of the sheer cost, you'd might as well just learn French and get the DVD release if you want to own it.

This comparison shows the exact opposite of what you're claiming though. The background is sharper in QTS (particularly the bottom left), but the rest is smoothed out ridiculously, and blocky as hell. I'm assuming this sharpness is due to (ab)use of warpsharp, which is a sin, considering the fairly gross smoothing elsewhere that appears to be caused by a different old and sinful filter (fft3d?).

Jumping around to a couple of scenes, it looks like the backgrounds tend to look better (to me at least) in the QTS version, but anything with motion looks better in the R-R version. QTS has a lot of strange artifacts along the outlines during these parts.
