EVO 2012 happened over the course of the last weekend. Many amazing matches happened in both King of Fighters and Marvel Versus Capcom 3 Ultimate, while Street Fighter 4 was largely awful. I know next to nothing about competitive fighting games, but it was still ridiculously entertaining watching the matches and especially the top 32 whittle down to the top 8 in Marvel Versus Capcom. In particular, my and many other's favorite player was a dark horse called Frutsy. Frutsy hails from Mexico, doesn't speak English, and his arcade stick controller is a wooden box with the buttons and stick inside, as opposed to the professional-quality controllers most contestants had. His super happy demeanor and especially his team made him a favorite in the crowd, and nearly 95,000 people watched the livestream during the top 8 finals as he smashed his way to fifth place in all of EVO. He played a team consisting of Taskmaster and Captain America, two great characters, as well as a character most top-level players find a joke: M.O.D.O.K.! Frutsy's MODOK play is great and while I don't think anyone seriously thought he'd win it all, to make it to 5th place was amazing. The winner of the Losers Bracket has to win 3 out of 5 sets twice while the winner of the Winners Bracket only has to win one set of 3 out of 5. They use a conveyor belt and some nifty projector animations to make some pretty cool effects. A bit rudimentary in execution, I really like the idea and when the effect works, it's kinda mindbending.
