I've never really gotten into this band beyond None So Vile, but I'm glad I came across this because it reminded me of Rage Nucléaire, Lord Worm's current black metal-ish project. They've got two songs on their MySpace (how is this place still alive), both of which are surprisingly good.

Anyone else think it's weird to see someone play death metal on a Stratocaster?
That dude looks like he should be playing a cover of "Born to be Wild"

But yeah, I loved None So Vile and liked Whisper Supremacy, and it sounds like I'm not missing much from the rest of their collection.

Their first album, Blasphemy Made Flesh, is essential death metal too.

I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Arrangements like this often happen for the same reason Marilyn Manson played after Slayer on a tour a few years ago - promoters know that there are a good number of people who like Slayer and Motorhead who will react very poorly to Slipknot, so they put them on last. Despite having a dozen bands on the bill, they managed to put together three in a row that a certain fanbase will attend for - this is much more appealing than five to six bands of that type spread throughout the bill, since people will come and go.

I know Slipknot are the ones with platinum records and apparently Slayer never sold a million copies of any album in the US, but we could at least think of it as the show being arranged to avoid a bunch of angry Slayer fans booing a band that they hate.

Xombie posted:

Mayhem Fest always gives top billing to the most marketable band. I don't mind, since then I can leave without waiting in traffic.

I have to say that with Slayer, Motorhead, and Anthrax, this is by far the best mainstage they've had. However, now that High on Fire pulled out, it is the worst side stage.

Slayer fans leaving before Slipknot perform and High on Fire no longer being on the bill reduces the chance of skulls being crushed by 90% or more.

I had never heard of Liege Lord before doing this and apparently they released some Iron Maiden albums that are better than most Iron Maiden albums.

:swoon: Liege Lord :swoon:

I'll take Villain's "Kamikaze" and raise you Machinery's "Kamikaze". Carl Albert is one of the best metal vocalists and Villain rules, but I wanted to post this song. This video is exceptionally awesome being from Connecticut and knowing that Lake Compounce is a family-friendly amusement water park and the local Fox channel that kicks it off is where I used to watch Sonic the Hedgehog and tons of other awesome cartoons when I was 7 years old.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=suS0Y7eYQdk

On the subject of US power metal, I knew a handful of bands and liked them for years, but I was never aware of the scene as a whole, nor how many awesome bands there were that I had never heard of. I asked around at local metal shows and people in the Stamford, CT metal scene had no clue about the 80s scene and had never heard of Liege Lord, and only one or two knew who Fates Warning were. While nobody around this part of Connecticut knew anything about 80s heavy metal, some dude from New Zealand was able to name nearly a dozen good bands from here (he has a pretty sweet speed metal band called Razorwyre)

I bought this ESP record at Goodwill for $1 because it looked 80s as gently caress and they thanked Liege Lord on the back. That was a good decision. I also found a copy of Malice's "In The Beginning" at Goodwill a few days ago, for some reason a single awesome metal record will turn up every once in a while, never more than one though.

I don't know why people still bother commenting on festival running orders like this. It's fairly obvious that lineups are ranked by quality or status, but by how many ticket sales they'll generate. Unfortunate as it is, Megadeth, Motorhead and Slayer are not the live bands they used to be, and don't draw the crowds they used to either.

I have to agree with the reviews I've read so far, It's the three way love child of The Doors, Ghost and Akercocke. One of the more original releases of the year thus far.

I went to Mayhem Festival this year in Seattle on July 3rd. Motorhead was goddamn amazing. They even played two songs off of my favorite Motorhead album 1916 which ruled.

Slayer always does an excellent show. For people who have never seen Slayer, and I pity you if you haven't, what I love about Slayer is they do not pander to the crowd or say poo poo like "Hey Seattle, Let's jump up and get down" or some lovely pun like "We want Seattle to have rain... REIGN IN BLOOOOOOD" or something loving stupid. They just come out and play and it is awesome.

Devil Wears Prada, As I Lay Dying, Anthrax, Upon a Burning Body were all excellent. I had never heard Upon a Burning Body before and they were really good live. Made me check out their albums and they are pretty decent.

Asking Alexandria - uhhh... What are these dudes all about? Didn't enjoy this very much. Had never heard them, and I don't plan on hearing them again anytime soon. They were terrible. Their albums might sound good, but they sucked fat bags of cocks live.

Slipknot was there.

Overall had a great time. Definately go if you can just to see Motorhead and Slayer. You can never see them too often or too much.

I find that with recent Megadeth too. I can listen to Peace Sells, RIP and Countdown to Extinction and enjoy them, but the newer stuff gets played once, I'll think "this seems pretty cool" but later on not have any interest in listening to it again.

Dave was somewhat tolerable when he was just an obnoxious douchebag, but now he's an obnoxious Christian douchebag, which is much worse.

It seems weird to me to not look to musicians for political opinion when you consider that Megadeth have generally always had politically themed songs. I guess in this case it's because Dave's current views are basically the polar opposite of what they were in the '80s/90s.
