Thank you for this, I'd never heard of this band before and I've been checking them out. I love Ghost, and the comparisons are very apt. Yet another band that will probably never tour anywhere near me, but thank god for the internet!

We interview Sharlee D'Angelo, the bass player of Arch Enemy, and I got to ask him about doing the anarchy bit while, at the same time, merchandising the poo poo out of the band. I was surprised to get an honest and pragmatic answer, instead of an attempt to BS his way out. I still think the suburban-anarchist thing is ridiculous, but at least it was an interesting talk.

I am not an especially metal person, nor do I have many metallic friends, but I have gotten interested in metal fairly recently, probably due hearing the to the Brütal Legend soundtrack. From there, I've just randomly checked out internet recommendations. Some of the great classic metal bands are kind of intimidating because there's so much music and I rarely know where to start. So far, based on a Internet-informed sampling of their albums, I've liked Dio and Judas Priest quite a bit and Iron Maiden not as much.
Of more recent bands, Týr, Turisas, Aldious, and Arkona seem good and Ribspreader is unlistenable. I think I don't "get" growly vocals.
So any suggestions of bands with similar characteristics (vocals not required) would be appreciated.

I think you'll like bands like folky bands like Heidevolk, Eluveitie, Manegarm and Finntroll. Maybe Moonsorrow, though that might get too growly. I've been out of the loop for those kinds of bands for a while, but I'd say try those and see what you think. I'm sure others will have some more good ideas.

Soon we'll post more news about the limited edition, the videoclip, the internet single and a looot of other stuff. Expect a lot this time...we are really proud of this album and we're gonna give you the best we can!

The album was recorded and mixed at SONIC PUMP STUDIOS in Helsinki, Finland with producer NINO LAURENNE (Amorphis, Lordi, Hevisaurus, etc.) and it features:

- Guest appereance by JON OLIVA (Savatage, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Jon Oliva's Pain)
- A guitar solo from Teemu Mantysaari (WINTERSUN)
- Pipes, flutes and other typical folk instruments played by Maurizio Cardullo, the amazing musician from Italian band FOLKSTONE.
- A great production and killing sound also thanks to the addition of the NEW amazing DRUMMER and BASS PLAYER.
- A bunch of killing songs going from high speed folk metal to melodic and romantic ballads, from crushing metal melancholic mid tempos to acoustic folk tunes.

Blind Guardian's sound changes from album to album. To give you a good idea of their scope check out the songs (in chronological order of album releases) Valhalla, Lord of the Rings, Lost in the Twilight Hall, Time What is Time, The Bard's Song, Born in a Mourning Hall, Bright Eyes, Into the Storm, Mirror Mirror, ... I'll stop there. That should give you a general idea. From there they continue to get more technical, produced, experienced, and their songs become even more composed.

Yes, do so, Blind Guardian are loving awesome. Fiendish Dr. Wu is also correct about their sound changing over time, they were a lot more stripped down earlier in their career. Regardless, they've always sounded pretty unique. You should indeed try out their songs from all over their career.

Now, to continue on the slightly folky side of things:
Wuthering Heights are amazing and you should try them out too.
They have some fantastic guitar leads and melodies, and one of the best heavy metal vocalists around today, imo. Also drat good lyrics. Their latest album, Salt, is one of my favourite albums in many years.

Also, since you seemed to like trad metal like Dio and JP, you should try out Astral Doors, who have the same vocalist as Wuthering Heights and are just generally really loving kickass traditional metal. The Best Of-compilation named after this song is a good starter package.
