I switched from Geico to State Farm after finding out that it would save me over $100 a month.

Might want to check all-state. State farm quote on a 1998 van, and a 1996 honda civic was 132 dollars a month. I rang up progressive and they told me the best they had was all-state for 76 dollars a month for both. Progressive wanted 96 a month.

NBC has one of those "best commercials" programs on right now (the Clio awards?)

I've only had it on for ~ten minutes, but haven't seen anything super-awesome yet...

Though they are showing some older, "classic", commercials (the one onn ow is from 2007...but it is a REALLY good one. That Levis "Strange Love" one where the couple keep stripping off clothes and then the next "layer" is another decade's fashion style.

Both sell games. GameFly, however, lets you rent them first, play them for as long as you want, and if you don't like 'em, you send 'em back and get more, Netflix-style. If you do like the game, however, you have the option of buying them at pretty decent prices (I think it was around $35-ish last time I looked for a $60 new game), and they send you the mint case/manual.

In reality, it's an infinitely better model, one that is only lessened by how terrible those commercials are.

They are, this is basically a clip show pull of some of them as well as some old favorites.

As an interesting note winning a Clio award is actually statistically really bad for the agency. More than 60% of Clio award winning agencies lost that piece of business within the year of winning that award.

More than likely it's the same reason for the "Sports Illustrated curse". To get a Clio your ad needs to be an outlier on the high end of the quality curve; and it's rare, and difficult, for an agency to do that year after year.

Barudak

Young Freud posted:

There are multiple factors but it boils down to a pretty consistent set of issues.

1) Like you said, many Clio ads don't showcase the actual product very well and sales fall despite the ad
2) Worse still, many Clio ads end up pushing an "edgy" or inappropriate brand messages which can really hurt a brand with an established reputation.
3) Many shops which make Clio-caliber ads are entirely or predominantly known for their creative departments. Since the idea behind their campaign isn't theirs many clients/agencies which contract with them will take an imaginative idea and move on at the end of the contract.

Basically, the Clio awards and the actual function of advertising and how agencies work are often at odds with one another. A Clio is not the measure of the success of an ad, only its creativity and execution.

The cell phone version of this is beyond awful as well. You'll love this: it was actually a spin off of Monster Cable, so yes, it's literally a Monster thing, complete with huge markup without a tangible difference. All of HTC's most recent phones come with an auto-enabled Beats Audio mode when you plug headphones in. What does it do? Crushes the mids in favor of boosted bass/treble. :v:
