A lot of people hate on Avicii (everyone in this thread) but VIP tickets at your school's homecoming sounds pretty awesome and you should have an awesome time. Especially for someone new to electronic music, this would be a great first concert. Do you know more about the event? Dress code, venue size, # of people going? Seeing as it is a homecoming thingy, I am guessing the dress code is more formal than your typical rave or festival.

How many EPs has he put out at this point? I think I only have 2 of them and a folder of his collected remixes on my computer at home. I think he's released more, but I could be wrong. It seems like I keep seeing news that he's releasing something every now and then and I don't have all of it, though.

Heading to VELD this weekend in Toronto, and not sure who to go see outside of the bigger acts. Pretty much going to be at main VELD stage from 4-11pm on Saturday, and from 3-11pm on Sunday. However, if there's someone I shouldn't miss in the Bacardi tent, I wouldn't mind sneaking away for a bit. I've heard good things about some of them... http://veldmusicfestival.com/line-up/set-times-for-veld/ Anyone here you wouldn't want to miss?

mynameisjohn posted:A bunch of the good live sets are absolutely amazing. Soulwax, Araab Musik, and Simian Mobile Disco are some of the cool ones that I've seen recently. If you can't do it (ala most people) it sucks, but I really love the best "Live" sets and if I'm going to see someone play a DJ set I want it to be on vinyl or CDJs, don't think that's too ridiculous of an assertion. If I go to a dance, I'm not going to 'see' anything. I'm going to listen to music and dance. If anything, the only thing I'm looking to see is other people in the crowd. If a DJ can play a good set with nothing more than a MIDI controller and a laptop, that is completely fine by me. Vinyl and CDJs aren't going to save someone with terrible taste and an inability to read a crowd.

Having CDJs or Vinyl improve your ability to read a crowd, though, I remember the second night that I saw Boys Noize in LA when he was there for a week. I went to the first and third show and my friend went to all three. The first and second were almost identical apparently. On the third he opened the same way again, but then got on the mic and basically said "i've had a bad day and im in a mood to party so I'm gonna play a new set" and played an entirely different set than any of his that I've ever seen. If you are pressing play on an ableton set list you can't really just throw songs in mid-way through and respond to your personal mood or the vibe of the room. e: Its kind of like stand-up comedy in a way. If you can't incorporate new material into each separate show a lot of people will start getting on your act as "stale", even though its really hard to be smart and funny. Thats why the best comedians have this ability to think on their feet instead of just only reciting these jokes they've practiced forever. Good DJs don't get stale. straight up brolic fucked around with this message at 20:09 on Aug 3, 2012 |

I don't know what the gently caress you are talking about. You realize that using Ableton/Traktor/whatever doesn't mean you just hit play and stand back, right? Like, I'm not talking about deadmau5 or Girl Talk hitting play on a pre-mixed mp3. You can have however many thousands of tracks ready to browse and select. It's literally no different than having a huge crate of records. Perhaps you need to clarify your language because you are lumping in people who use digital tracks with people who press play on a pre-recorded mp3 and that makes no sense. Also, this thread is once again presented with the faulty notion of DJ as rockstar.

mynameisjohn posted:Having CDJs or Vinyl improve your ability to read a crowd Jesus man. I get your point that playing a playlist sucks, and that a good performer can read a crowd and not have to throw down the same set every night, but the methods of which you play a fantastic set has no effect on the fantastic set. Its still a fantastic set.

What the gently caress are you talking about? Just using Ableton or Traktor doesn't make you Steve Angello, it actually means you have the ability to be even more flexible in your track selection because you can have 20,000 songs cued up instantly instead of having to break your back lugging CDs or vinyls around

I may be wrong, but aren't Ableton and Traktor dramatically different? I thought Traktor and Serato were virtual DJ programs with your music library (which is fine by me), but Ableton is just building a set with transitions and then playing it with a midi-controller (which im not cool with)?

You are correct about Traktor and Serato, but I'm pretty sure you can do it on the fly with Ableton too.

Tons of DJs play with ableton and don't pre-record anything. There are DJs who plan out their set with records, with CDs, with ableton, with traktor. It doesn't matter what you use. One of my favorite DJs, period, Surgeon, uses ableton and he's an amazing DJ. http://soundcloud.com/dynamic-tension/surgeon-humanity-test-dj-mix If you don't know who Surgeon is, get acquainted, he's one of the biggest names in British techno history.

Ah my mistake, the perception that I had of "ableton DJ's" was that they just pressed play then hit buttons and turned knobs. I really was not trying to be deliberately obtuse I just appreciate people doing things on the fly, because that's cool and makes these guys out to be more like a friend playing records at a party than some god to be idolized or somethin.

I'm guessing that most of the posters in this thread have no clue about this guy, but the Motor City Drum Ensemble DJ Kicks is amazing. Highly recommended that everyone get a copy of it. Amazon has it (though maybe search for it through the SA amazon box). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md3TxjTH2tI Also the Prosumer Panorama Bar mix is good. It's not like, amazing, but it is really good. Some hidden gems on there like this one from Morgan Geist aka 1/2 of Metro Area. It's a little bit pricier than the DJ Kicks, so maybe get a download of it. amazon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKMxvUeNieQ Also the steffi track that he opens with is 5/5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnBQdI3sl9I
