My first car was an '82 EXP with a hole in the #3 piston. It was my first engine rebuild. What a pile of poo poo. At least I got some use out of the rather unique maplight.

I've noticed that ford plastic has a tendency to shrink as it gets old. That's probably why the hood on that exp is popped. To hide the half inch panel gap. I still love those cars though. I remember when they were plentiful.

Wikipedia posted:The transmission was inspired by the Premier's Audi and ZF automatics. Borrowing heavily from Chrysler's A604 (41TE) "Ultradrive" transversely mounted automatic, it became the A606 (also known as 42LE). This "Ultradrive" transmission however was not without critics as The New York Times reported on January 25, 1991 that Consumers Union would publish in the February 1991 issue of the magazine Consumer Reports a warning for consumers to not purchase a vehicle with this "Ultradrive" transmission citing poor reliability and safety hazards. Find out if it's on the original transmission. If it's as much like the A604 as it sounds, then if it's the original it's likely one of the few that managed to be built well and will last a long drat time if properly maintained. If it's not the original transmission, then you have no idea how bad a time bomb it is. I'm extrapolating from this and experience with and reading about the A604, I could be wrong, and they might have drastically improved the A606 later on, though.

It came out in the late 1980s and all the actual design problems had been ironed out by 2003. I'd be more worried about the engine, since "SE" I think was the base model with the terrible 2.7l timing chain eating sludge-o-matic. I guess for $1800 you can check it out and if it runs and has no leaks it's probably as good as you'll get for that amount of money but if I had a choice I would try and find a 3.5l.

Like Troatwarbler said, by 2000 they actually had all the bugs worked out and they are fine as long as you don't put dextron in them, sadly about 5 years after they should have moved on... By '03 most of the 2.7s problems were sorted too, but its a turd of an engine and too small for a big car like the LH.

It's probably one of the top 3 most common vehicles in the United States, you should be able to find at least two dozen of them in your nearby junkyard to pull of any part you need. I would buy that in a heartbeat.

e-brakes seem to be gone in cars with rust issues. Knowing how things are around here, I would wager a lot of the bracketing that routes the e-brake cable is just rusted away. Not irreparable, but indicative of the sad state of things.

Also be careful of the water pump. I have a Stratus with the 2.7, and the water pump went at 95,000 miles. And thanks to some inspired genius design on Chrysler's part, this involved removing the head just to get to it, and set me back a thousand bucks. On the plus side, the mechanic who opened up the engine said he'd never seen a 2.7 with that many miles so clean inside. So I guess it's got that going for it.

So about two weeks ago I was watching a buddies band play and I wandered outside of the bar for some air (and to vomit) and saw this on the lot next door. It didn't have any details on it but I love me some boxy 80's cars. Well earlier today I saw this pop up on CL and it prompted me to go check it out. It runs, doesn't idle well but once going it's fine. Interior is in excellent shape, no tears or big stains. They've got it priced at a grand, I offered them $500. Dude said if nobody bites in the next 2 weeks he'll do it. http://fortwayne.craigslist.org/ctd/3134976102.html 1984 Mercury Marquis - $995
