Especially the second one for some reason, the doctor jumping out of his flashy car and straight into a pit. It caught me off-guard I guess.

Came across a hilarious subbed episode of gaki no tsukai that I'd never seen before, hopefully it's new to some of you as well. I was kind of tepid on the first episode, but when they look at Matsuomoto and call him Ken Watanabe and laugh so hard at their cleverness, I lost it. Because it's so close to something real anchors would do.

I really enjoyed this variety/game show, Dero!, which seems to be based on the kind of "Escape the Locked Room" games that you might play on the internet. The production is really well done. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xot95y_dero_fun EDIT: Note, there's a Gaki appearance in a weird sort of way. There are only 5 Japanese shows that I like, two of them being anime (Pokemon & Speed Racer, both having a very western style), and the rest being game shows, two of them already mentioned here (the Gaki no Tsukai batsu games, and the world's best obstacle course program, Sasuke). I tried to like Takeshi's Castle, but the dubbed version is poo poo, and the original version is dated and contains some VERY "Japanese" comedy skits as filler... But onto that third game show - Challenger On Fire (incorrectly titled "Challengers Of Fire" on Hawaiian TV)! This show is amazing. A shame that it's so hard to find video clips these days... It ran during the 1990's. The format is a pair of hosts and a panel of celebrities commenting on several different challenges each episode (the prize for each challenge is 1 million yen), and WHAT challenges! The highlight is the electric rod maze (why on Earth haven't they done this in the West yet?), which went through several different revisions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2C5ZynqOJn0 Other challenges include, but are absolutely NOT limited to: Name 100 - A panel of a hundred people is given a hundred themed questions of increasing difficulty, and whoever gets them all wins the prize. Some categories included Star Wars, anime characters, kanji, and karaoke songs. Keep a tissue in the air with your breath until time runs out. Eat enough food within a few hours to gain a certain amount of weight. Solve a floor maze while your partner is going through it in a motorized chair. Hit a home run on one pitch. Stop a timer while blindfolded, then match that time exactly in a sprint. Get your baby to crawl to you through a maze. Send your child to buy 3 randomly chosen grocery items. Hide in the woods, and avoid being discovered by specialists for the whole day. Catch 10 plates thrown by a monkey. Guess what your partner has drawn. Catch the money while going down a ski slope. Build a tower in a pool to reach the goal. Climb a steep slope with water running down it. Cry on command. And the next best one after the electric rod maze, survive several shiatsu massage points of increasing difficulty! Synthetic Hermit fucked around with this message at 06:14 on Aug 12, 2012 |

I'm currently in the middle of timing and typesetting the Seven Ranger Game (sequel to the Five Ranger Game, naturally) from a translation by zari-gani. We previously put out the Friendly Downtown with Yoiko segment, and we have a number of other episodes lined up, but working on them is pretty low priority for me right now.

I'm not kidding myself that I'll be useful to anybody as I am now, but I have a ton of free time for the next couple of months and I really need something to do. What I was going to do was grab subtitles off the Downtown Fanpage or Gaki Files and just get stuck in, probably on an old Kiki as the format is very repetitive and I know it well. However if you or zari-gani happen to have any spare subtitles knocking about would you be willing to send them my way? It's just for learning purposes, however if I actually do a semi decent job then at least some new content comes out of it (possibly, maybe) Oh - and my husband and I watched DERO last night and got all excited when we guessed the mystery face segment. We're so lame.

If anyone can find them and are willing to time them that'd be great. I would also love to translate Ametalk episodes but that would take a ton of time and dedication for both me and whoever would time it. For now it would take too much time away from my self-imposed GCCX duties. Dotch Cooking Show is also high on my list of J-TV interests. The show has been officially subbed and shown in the US, but the subtitles are so-so (while mostly accurate, they skip over a bunch of lines and they sound awkward) and I would like to give it a more proper and thorough sub treatment. If you've never seen this show, I highly recommend it and there's a ton of subbed episodes on Youtube. If you like Iron Chef, well I'd say this show is even better.

Anyone seen the new Gakifiles translation yet? (http://gakifiles.blogspot.de/2012/08/hamadas-no-trick-magic-show.html) It's pretty hilarious in the typical, masochist Hamada way. I cracked up when he did the trick with Tanaka and Endo where he pushes out the middle box and it's supposed to go all the way.

And I actually have a high-res file for Electrical Outlet Russian Roulette (so it's ready to be subbed), and a shoddy file for Spinning Game (would like to find a better version, but better than nothing). I know Tanaka gets pranked a lot, but this was a particularly brutal one where they seriously make him think he's about to be killed by a heckler and I don't think it was scripted. About four or five years ago I was in Japan and we were watching TV and there was this one show where you had to build pyramids with dice. Very. Tiny. Dice. Contestants had some 20-something hours to complete it, and it was incredibly stressful and nerve-wracking. There was another show where a guy had to get out of a very small parking spot with a van like in Austin Powers. Anyone know where I find either of those shows? Preferably the dice one as it was the funniest.
