Guess I'll have to check out those others!For anyone wondering, I was at Bloodstock this weekend, and both Winterfylleth and Anaal Nathrakh were excellent. Nathrakh were by far the best band of the weekend in my opinion, I was on the barrier and absolutely delirious with terror and happiness at the same time. I was a total wreck by the end of their set, it was so good. I also happened to end up standing next to Mick and Duncan (Duncan does live bass for AN, and vocals for Fukpig for those wondering) whilst watching 'fylleth, which was really loving cool. I also got my LP of Hell is Empty and All the Devils are Here signed by all members of the band. From speaking to Mick, Duncan and Dave briefly at various points over the weekend, they all seem really cool, and I now love them even more than I did. /fanboy rant over

Walknut is a fantastic project (which I did actually give my money to before doing my research). It's a shame that some of the nationalist/right-wing BM sounds so good, as often they capture a sound not found in other BM (or not for me, anyway). I wish they'd put a new album out, regardless.

About 90% of black metal bands have extremely conservative/right wing views. Some are borderline racist and some have been explicitly so over the years. An awful lot more have adopted slogans and icons to shock people, but also sympathise with the groups those symbols represent. Some of the names that regularly appear in magazines or even on television these days have practically got graveyards in their closets. You have to remember that at it's core, black metal represents a totalitarian, misanthropic, misogynistic viewpoint that promotes elevation of the self, nature and to a certain extent nationalism, alongside contempt for everyone outside the sphere of influence. In other words, it's pretty much the perfect breeding ground for right wing nationalist hatred. It's not exactly difficult for a band to work in racist connotations when they can semi-legitimately claim that anti-semitism is as valid a stance for a black metal band to take as anti-christianity or anti-islam - after all, they're all just abrahamic religions, aren't they?

Anyone know what kind of ns-views Akitsa supports? I mean... They`re Canadian. What kind of NS-people spawns out of Canada, really? It seems he is kind of obsessed with the philosophers that has spoken for NS, rather than be out slaying arse himself. I`m also curious about Furze, what does the name mean? I know I`ve read that in the political world it has something to do about NS, but what? No worries though, beacuse in the same interview Furze stated that they did not support national-socialists.. Might not be so wierd since things have escalated here in Norway, concerning NS-stuff, after the Anders Breivik-shootings/bombing. I bet my name gets blacklisted in Norway just for mentioning his name here..

Having interviewed him and talked with him for quite a while I can say that, in my opinion, he is not pretending. He really believes this stuff. I think that he might be delusional, not because of his faith but because of the "possessions" he has seen and his communication (I'm guess both ways) with Gods.

It almost never pays to look into the personal mind of people. Everyone thinks weird poo poo, or that everyone will get a joke. Who cares, they're musicians, not geniuses. Especially in our genres of choice. After losing all respect for Mustaine by way of his interviews I go out of my way to avoid hearing what these people think because as long as they make good music, their beliefs are irrelevant. Even if you're scared of supporting some NS band, your little $10 album purchase isn't going to put them over the top for starting the next nazi rise or anything. More than likely it's going to buy a bottle of cheap booze, so who gives a poo poo.

I'll still try to catch them with Menace Ruine this fall, but I'm not really feeling the record at the moment.

RE: The production- I had the same thought, I liked the raw, almost punky feel that the s/t had. In this interview they claim that the punky sound was not intentional, and it sounds like they imply it is not the sound they wanted. I can't help but feel that Cold of Ages is cold and distant, and not in the good "cold otherworldly BM" way. I expect it will grow on me, I didn't think much of the split with Fell Voices at first, and now it is my favourite thing they've recorded to date. When that first song with the female vocals starts (track 3), I actually thought they'd basically gone and put a Worm Ouroboros song on the record, luckily, it does kick in though.

Some shitbird black metal frontman has astronomically less ability to harm anyone than Coke, FoxConn, or Monsanto, to name a few most of us will probably patronize today. Not that I'm saying go give Watain money either, I'm sure not. Frankly it's more amusing that people get SUPER SERIOUS about black metal like that.

To me the amazing thing, and I mentioned it in the intro to the interview, is that Satanism gets a free pass. If you say you're a Christian people mock you, but if you say you believe in Satan as a deity, it's just "BADASS DUUUUDE!!!!". It's the same kind of delusion, with the addition, in the case of Watain, that it seems to be a violent and dangerous ideology with no bright side. On a side note, I'm currently arranging for an interview with Selim, from the Devil's Blood. I want to do something similar to what I did with Erik.

Taking a break from idiots in metal bands for a moment, fans of Darkspace will probably like this not-new side project one of them has called Sun Of The Blind. Still very black metal but not the chaos of Darkspace. It's a slower, kind of ambient version of Darkspace's sound but with a whispery growl for vocals rather than the shrieks. There's no mistaking this came from a Darkspace member at all and I question if I'd like this kind of sound if it didn't have that touch of space vacuum cold to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u24qlJgseV4
