Darksiders 2 strikes me as the kind of game I thought Amalur would be when I first played it. I'm just barely getting my feet wet in the second world, and yet I'm already having so much fun. Definitely the best Zelda game of the decade.

So I am kinda late to the party here but I just bought a PS3 off of a friend and the first thing I did was download and play Journey. God drat, what an experience. Just superb. I played through the majority of it with one person I bumped into and was genuinely upset when we got separated. :( Excellent, excellent game.

I like Sleeping Dogs but its just going to take some getting used to to not end every mission with around 1 section of Police XP. For those who haven't played it yet, you have two different types of experience from missions, Triad which goes up from defeating enemies and Police, which goes DOWN the more laws you break (hitting civilian cars, jacking rides or injuring/killing civilians.) Thankfully you only have to worry about that during missions and in freeplay you can screw around as much as you want with no penalty.

Another thing that I found weird about the game is that apparently it takes place in 2010? At least all the supplemental case files and such seem to say so.

I like the dual XP thing, it's a gentle reminder to watch your targets during missions as you are supposed to be a cop, not a psychopath. But, if you want to be a crazed killer, then you still can, you just won't get those sweet cop rewards for doing so. It doesn't force you to play in character, but it does reward you more if you do so.

The 2010 thing may be due to the fact that some of the reports come from the previous undercover cop who had his cover blown. It's likely that they waited a while before putting the new guy in.

Also, for the curious, I'm at 22 hours on the clock and just over 50% completion. The way I play sandbox games is a milk and cookies approach to main and side missions. As in, I don't want to run out of one before the other, so I make sure to space out the story stuff with plenty of free world collecting and jobbing. If you play the way I do, then there's certainly plenty of time to be filled with this beauty. I can see how someone burning through just the story would do so in a quarter of the time.

I spent forever putting off the time when I would need to use guns. But now I discovered that I love the "aggressive cover" system of leaping over poo poo in slow-mo just as much as I like punching people in the face, so I'm not holding back now.

The story is really well done. The characters and the acting are really pulling me into things. When the deaths of the people who I'm spying on affect me (and Wei Shen), then you know they are doing things right. It's not just the character who is going to be having conflicted loyalties, I can see it happening to me too. The more I play the game, the more I love everything about it. It's my game of the year so far.

It's definitely a nice way of handling the usual disconnect. Even though you CAN go crazy when not on a mission, I find myself avoiding it, both because I don't want to be in the habit of cruising through pedestrians when I get to a mission, but also because it just feels "wrong."

Wei is still a homicidal maniac who wrings his hands over shooting a rival gangster whilst merrily pitching them over railings to their death, but... I mean so does Batman. So he's, like, roughly no more psychotic than Batman. Which basically works.

Of course, my Wei also likes to punch people pissing on the undercover cop HQ, because nobody disrespects the law and gets away with it :china:

January 22-Febuary 19th, 2013 is going to be crazy. Nino kuni, Dead Space 3, and Metal Gear Rising. Who's bright idea was it to make January the "holiday" season? The only bright side is each game is 2 weeks away from the next, which gives like 1/10 the total time necessary to complete the previous title, possibly.

Good thing 2012 is shaping up to be 2010 all over again where a cheap Fall season yields a packed following year.

Playstation allstars and like Resident Evil 6 are the only titles interesting to me it seems. I might finally get caught up on trophies and finishing old games!

I had a lot of problems with 1 and so far I don't have hardly any of them with 2. The combat is far more fun AND it is used more judiciously, the puzzles are more fun, it's a much less claustrophobic world that you can relax and just see the sights in, and so on.

It's 100 waves of progressively harder challenges. If you can make it to Wave 25/50/75, it'll checkpoint you, but also saves the stores of Wrath/Health potions. So yeah, you basically have 5/5 for 100 waves. You can cut your losses and quit out with a prize after every fifth floor, the longer you stay in, the better the prize, and I believe progress is reset. It gets pretty goddamn hard and really pushes you to swap builds around between rounds to avoid stuff like status effects and use health-/wrath-stealing weapons. It's actually a lot of fun.

So I have a question, has anyone played Hyperdimension Neptunia?

I keep having people reccomend me this title but it has simply the most mixed set of reviews ever. I mean it sounds somewhat interesting that it's an RPG based on the 16 bit console wars, but then I look at the art style and battle systems of the game and it doesn't really strike me as something that's ment to be an actual RPG. It really appears to be more of a visal novel over anything else, but then people are saying it's the next Earthbound because it's that drat strange and good.

The game allready is expensive as hell and I've seen it in other places but avoided picking it up due to many of the reviews that I've read. So I'm curious on what opinions people have on it.

Who told you to play this game? Don't trust those people. Beyond the voice acting, everything about Hyperdimension Neptunia is loving awful. I would say the writing has some clever bits too but that stuff is concealed out by all the anime bullshit and embarrassing fan-service. The combat is dull and not nearly as interesting as it should be (you basically assign all you're best attacks to one button and tap the same button over and over to get through battles), the graphics suck, and the dungeons are so boring that you'd assume that they're randomly generated but they're not. Trust me, I beat the game for some reason and there's really nothing there worth recommending.

My understanding was that Earthbound received luke-warm reviews when it originally came out and it had a cult following that made it one of the more desired games later on in the SNES's cycle and well afterwards. I guess that's where the comparison could be drawn other than both games being under the same genre.

I take the sequels and related games like Record of Agarest War Zero are pretty much the same sub-par quality then too.

Yeah thats what I feared, I mean I never really judge a game by it's cover(i.e. Catherine) but Hyperdimension felt like it was that type of game.

Eh, the anime fanservice aspect of it isn't really even it's worst feature. If that was all that was wrong with it, it wouldn't be a problem. There are games that are far FAR worse in that respect. For example Ar Tonelico 2, while being a far better game, is also far more embarrassing in almost every respect.

Vitamean

I watched a friend of mine play it some time ago. Anime fan service aside, as an actual game it seems bland as all hell. The random battles aren't even really random; after you take a certain amount of steps it's just WHOOP ANOTHER ENCOUNTER HOPE YOU LIKE MASHING THE FAST FORWARD BUTTON SO YOU CAN MEET THAT S RANK.

I actively enjoy playing anime as gently caress RPGs, and I wouldn't generally recommend Hyperdimension Neptunia to anyone. It front-loads the worst bullshit, hides the best bits of writing, and the battle system is incredibly weak. If you really must play an allegory for piracy taking over the world, start with Hyperdimension Neptunia 2, where at least the battle system's been fleshed out into something reasonably fun and there's actually a plot attached to the whole thing somewhere. That said: you've still got to like anime as gently caress RPGs to be able to get through it, because it's very repetitive and it also front-loads the worst poo poo around.

Fanservice aside, IF and Compile Heart have this problem where they're actually quite good at coming up with new and unique battle systems, they just can't make them fun. Cross Edge has an enormous range of skills and ways to combo those skills together, but the game's so repetitive and slow-paced you'll give up way before you figure it out.

e: Sleeping Dogs is pretty drat good, and the social stuff is much less obtrusive than I thought it'd be. I'd almost call it a more fun version of Saints Row 3, it kind of feels like it's taking the SR route of being more arcadey and fun than GTA4, even after you take all the subject matter into account. I wish there was real multiplayer in there, though.

Eeeh... kind of. Frank moves somewhere between how he did in DR1, and how Chuck moves in DR2. Less like a sofa, but no where near as nimble as Chuck. They also tweaked a bunch of other stuff, like making survivors less self-reliant.

Basically, it makes the game feel a lot more like DR1. If that's your cup of tea (it was mine), you'll dig DR2:OTR. If not, then not.

If you already beat DR2, the game is very similar, and might not be different enough to interest you. If you didn't beat it, or really love Dead Rising, you'll probably dig it.
