That's good to know. I didn't realize they allowed anyone to view the OT on the HBO site for free. I had thought you needed to setup an HBOGO account or something which I didn't want to bother with.

You have the ability to use HBOGO and you don't want to bother? You're crazy its freaking sweet. Netflix for HBO.

I don't have HBO anymore but I've been listening to the show for free for like a year through HBO's official Real Time podcast on iTunes. It might sound like :filez: but they themselves put every single episode as well as overtime up there for free every week (but it's audio only). Not really sure what they gain from it, but I'm not complaining :shobon:

Whenever I hear of old TVs like that still in use, my first thought is that the person could buy a new tv and probably recoup the costs in electrical savings while enjoying a modern tv.
But my second thought is that there are so many crappy TVs out there to buy if you don't know what to look for.

Time to upgrade man! The tv will be the most expensive apart admittedly, but everything else is right in line with what it costs to be a dvd owner.

It was the least I've liked anything Maher-related since he was swept up in the anti-Islam movement after 9/11 (Youtube). I'm glad my stupid moments from 10 years ago that I've gotten past aren't on Youtube.
I do like this clip because in it does show that reason really does eventually wear away notions like he had at the time.

Edit: Watching that now is just horrible. That was such a terrible time.
OK, Maher did kind of say similar things about Muslim leaders and Muslim people without seeming to understand that it's not Islam that's the problem with middle eastern leaders, it's the political climate of the middle east where certain views that don't have to even be the majority view to rise to the seat of power, just as happens here. As well as some things you hear from foreign leaders about America being politically intended to placate their own people (which is absolutely necessary for any leader to do, even if we can watch their tv), not intimidate ours, and sometimes they're trying to actually communicate a message to us. It happens the same way here.
Just like Christians can (as a trend of an area and time) either appear to be calm or rabid depending on the context of where and when in history you're looking at them.

I think he still does. He's the Matthew McConaughey of politics. Seriously, if there was a movie about him, McConaughey would be an obvious choice. I think he believes everything he says, but the little speech he gave about what to do in Egypt, you can say about any struggling nation or a developing nation.

Anyway, he'd be a good future presidential candidate.

I find it amusing that Maher sincerely apologized about not having a "Conservative" on the show. This show was pleasant to watch and not at all grating. Good panel guest too. Do we really need a conservative to spout off what Bill easily quoted? Nope.

I'm not sure. I haven't found a good electricity calculator to determine the comparative costs between a ten year old 19" Zenith TV and a newer one.

I tend to use things until they stop working.

Comcast doesn't allow their HBO subscribers to use HBO GO on the Roku or XBOX because Comcast has their own bad On Demand service. It's really loving dumb and I wish there was some way to fight that.

David Frum and David Stockman are two conservatives who are capable of having a reasonable discussion about how their beliefs differ from Maher's without driving the show into the ground. Reihan Salam is a tea party idiot who ruins every panel he's on without fail.

Not sure if he's a complete tea party ideologue, but his personality is just so incredibly grating any panel he's on is going to be dogshit. Aggressively shouting and talking at 200wpm significantly devalues any cogent points you have; if you suck at communicating in the chosen medium that's uh...rather detrimental to group conversation.

Agreed that Maher was really reaching with finding racism in that GOP ad though.

I lost all hope of Reihan representing actual human beliefs when he said we need to keep raising military spending year after year. He contradicted almost every other thing he said (including the 2020 economic implosion he ended on saying needs to be fixed right now [vote Romney]) just to fall in line with republican talking points.

Why in the world Maher booked freaking Reihan to start this season off with I can't fathom---agreed that Handler did a good job smacking him down a peg or so.

Parts of the show seemed entirely unresearched, as well. Chik-Fil-A discussion went with no substance or actual background on what hate groups the owner actually monetarily sponsors and instead focusing on "is it wrong to patronize the business of a bigot?"

They actually had the whole "who created The Internet" discussion which nearly gives validation to the right for even making that a debate in the first place. It's not. DARPA is responsible fro the underlying networking technologies (most importantly TCP/IP), the original infrastructure was Ma Bell's (already in-place), and Tim Berners-Lee at CERN initiated the first standard for web pages. What private industry is technologically responsible for is the Cat-5 cable (which looks quite a bit like a regular phone cord with the pairs twisted) and the ethernet standards -neither of which mattered particularly because of TCP/IP's resilience in running across varying linked network topologies. Private industry was actually late and subsidized investing in the backbone.
And frankly, no company had the particular communication needs DARPA had which necessitated creating such a network. Private industry would be decades behind (if ever) in creating The Internet if we waited for it.

But instead of researched or thought-out discussion, one guy credits business and one guy credits Al Gore. Both wrong, no discussion had because nobody on the panel knows a thing about it; why even bring it up?

Anyone else notice that Cuban spilled water again? He usually does that.

That was a dud return episode for me at least because I'm not that interested in this coming election. I think that was best encapsulated by Bill himself mentioning that Ryan held some of Obama's beliefs recently (700 billion Medicare cut) and has now done some form of a flip.

Bill said a few times "nothing happened while I was on break." There were a lot of topical issues he could've brought up but didn't want to for some reason. We have a big new shooting every week now to talk about but maybe he and the writers thought those have been covered enough.

I would've asked Salam why he is SURE that the world is going to be more dangerous each and every year and why we need to proactively spend more money on military/defense each calendar year.

I would love to hear from a booker/producer from the show to let us know how hard it is to get guests, especially "conservatives." They have literally no reason to be there unless they are promoting a book or some new teabagger website or something - or just like to troll Bill and the other guests/audience. I guess in some respects the same could be said for the drop in's but since most of them are actors/musicians/tv people who cares.

Salam is there because he'll show up. He'll have a list of talking points and crap he's paid to puke out by some think tank and he does it, usually by yelling over everyone else, changing the subject, and being horribly annoying - so it was particularly heartwarming that the crazy Entertainment channel bird shut him the gently caress down right off the bat.

As bad as he is he's still better than the Surfer Bob Dornan and screaming Kennedy types.

I'm a stenographer. I can assure you that he was incoherent speaking so quickly. He was going at least 250 which is way too fast to get your point understood and would promptly be told to slow the gently caress down in any formal setting.

I question how this man was raised.

I'm constantly disappointed by the lack of quality guests. If they want to have a serious discussion about technology then have someone proper on. The government initiated innovations bit could have been eye opening for many instead of another Al Gore joke, what the gently caress?

Honestly, if the "conservatives" are such precious little shrinking violets as to come on the show without carte blanche to be insufferable fools----bring on the proper anarchists, futurists, communists, more socialists, etc on into infinity. Let the audience and panel actually be confronted by and interact with the whole lot in this setting versus the vested media interests against all but R, D, and Libertarians as a sideshow.
