Ugh, gently caress the High Res Duke models. I got stuck on that friggin super market level for over an hour because a switch you have to shoot through a door doesn't show up when you use the models. I'd never played it before so I spent that long try to find what I was supposed to do to continue.

Looks like TB is previewing Wrack. Honestly, the game looks like it could use some work. The enemies aren't very cool, the color scheme isn't great ... it's basically Quake 2 all over again (and at worst will be like Daikatana). Maybe I'm missing something?

Oh yeah and the headbob is nauseating.

Well, they're still deep in beta territory and I don't think the renderer is technically complete yet, let alone all the textures. The latest blog post, for instance, is about how they're working on going back over the levels adding details to increase contrast in the environment. What's missing is the gameplay. It handles very solidly, it's basically Doom with scoring and jumping(turns out it's momentum based jumping, I just wasn't getting enough headway on my jumps before).

There's something about the slowness of the animations in Wrack that looks very much like Quake 2. That's not a good thing.

Maybe RetroBlazer?

As for Wrack, it's by a couple of the Skulltag guys so I'm just gonna wait until half the dev team disband the project and resume development as Wrangofernum. Such Is The Way Of All Things.

I liked Blood 2. :(

But JESUS it is crash-prone on like, every computer. I haven't even tried it on my new Windows 7/64-Bit computer based completely on what I've heard about how it crashes even more frequently than on other systems. A good source port could fix that, but I have a sinking suspicion it's not coming.

I played some dark places about 5 years ago and, while I was impressed by what was done with the Quake source, I felt it took away a lot of the charm that Quake has in its visual simplicity.

The other night I decided to try another more traditional port. I went with Qrack and spent about an hour configuring it exactly how I wanted it. I'm extremely happy with it and I've been playing a lot of the more modern single player maps that people have created.

There's some fantastic maps out there that were made fairly recently and take Quake gameplay and architecture to another level. I've noticed a lot of them are tuned way tighter than the original maps too which can make them challenging, but entirely fair. Visually I'm running it mostly vanilla except I really enjoy the enhanced skies and the rain.

Just want to also encourage anyone who hasn't checked out the quake 1 mapping scene in years to dig in because people have put in some serious time and dedication.

Gently lilting sounds and ambience as cats and scissors go flying by, watching cars explode in slow motion, sniper rifles that let off nuclear explosions with each shot... Does that sound like something worth watching?

There was a VLP of the base game and Apocalypse Weekend a few years ago. One that shows all all the ridiculous poo poo people have hacked into the game while you brave RWS's unfortunate attempts at humor would be pretty fun.

Oh, while I'm here, here's a good mod that I don't think I've mentioned yet: Samsara is a mod for Doom, Heretic, Hexen and Chex Quest that lets you play through as the Doom Guy, Blazkowicz from Wolfenstein, Corvus from Heretic, the Cleric from Hexen, or Duke Nukem, each with their own abilities and weapon sets. It was primarily built for multiplayer, but its pretty fun in single player as well! Here's a video of Duke blasting his way through Scythe 2:

I've played a few interesting creations. It's just a shame that mapmakers have to deal with a lot of conflicting standards by the main engines (darkplaces, fteqw, fitzquake, quakespasm) and that ultimately quake just doesnt have the same robust "toolset" as doom 2

I recently bought all the Dooms on Steam ( during the Quakecon sale ), and I have been having an absolute blast playing through Ultimate Doom with Zdoom. Widescreen support and mouselook makes the gameplay amazing - I just can't go back to keyboard-only anymore - and I don't feel like I need any further graphical enhancers. I am now trying to survive E4M2 on Ultra Violence, and call it a lack of skill or a fiendish map-design, but I feel like having a real challenge for the first time during this playthrough. With mouse-support ( and some old muscle-memory, I guess ) the first three episodes weren't that difficult on UV.

I promised myself to finish Ultimate Doom, Doom 2 and Final Doom before I test my skills with community-made WADs. I still have a pretty long way to go.

I finally got around to getting some play time into Odamex this weekend, and I think that it's now my preferred multiplayer port. Being able to have servers with voting and on-the-fly WAD changes is nifty, and the lag compensation is mind-blowingly good. I was playing on Euro servers with 200+ pings and from my end everything still looked and felt completely smooth.

I've always wanted an FPS adaptation of Paul Verhoeven's Total Recall done in the Quake engine, complete with terrible Arnold impersonator spouting great one liners. And of course it'd have to be ultra violent, maybe even use the GHOUL dismemberment system from Soldier of Fortune.

I mean, the movie already has a bunch of videogamey scenarios. The alien pyramid at the end would make a badass final level as well. You could totally (recall) use the hologram (HoloQuaid?) to distract badly animated Mars soldiers and mow them down. I'd buy it for a dollar.

If no one has tried it, there are changes to the characters. Heretic's fire mace is made a regular weapon (since it kinda sucks), you get Hexens cleric with a mix-mash of weapons from that game, BJ gets additional weapons, including the rocket launcher and the Spear of Destiny. Duke does not get the shrink or microwave gun, sadly.

Unfortunately, the whole "realistic maps" thing only really took off with Duke3D. Doom is definitely more suited to hellish environments and futuristic techbases, what with its choice in textures and so on.

I've been having fun in the early Doom II levels, but I haven't really found any good maps that fit the style, like Epic and Epic2 for Nazis.

Yup czg is a good bet.

Spirit posted a good starter list to SPUF: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2565483

Generally the good Quake maps these days fall into two categories. Either a super-refined version of classic Quake gameplay, or "Quake turned up to 11" with hordes of enemies, new weapons, new monster types, maybe some new types of entities and scripting.

Spirit's list includes both of those types. czg's stuff tends to be in the former group for example, and Tronyn in the latter.

I'd recommend anything that shows up in my Quake screenshots from Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/id/jlaw/screenshots/?appid=2310&sort=score&browsefilter=myfiles ... so you could see if anything there looks interesting. (I'd imagine there's a lot of overlap between this & Spirit's list.)

Another note... I've really enjoyed the "remix" levels that have been released recently, like: Geophobia (from DM7), Gloomier Keep (from E1M5), Bad Dark Cistern (from DM5 + DM6). And the two maps included in the Quoth mod, The Slipgate Triplex and Remix of the Damned.

Finally you can keep an eye out for Quake releases at http://www.celephais.net/board/

As far as rare insight goes, there's a goon called Hippieman who's a massive fanboy and worked on the Xbox Live Arcade port. I'm not sure if he hangs around this thread anymore, though. I hear if you say "W’rkncacnter" seven times into a mirror he emerges from the dying sun.

And as for Pathways, nope. The best you can do is use a Macintosh emulator loaded up with System 7 or compatible.

It plays nice with that Heretic++ graphical mod too, but make sure you load H++ first (a loader helps), or it breaks the new weapons.

I finished up Quake 2 a few days ago, and it's a lot better than I remember. There's plenty of ammo for you to go nuts with awesome weapons like the Chaingun, Rocket Launcher and BFG, which makes combat a blast. The enemies have personality (like the cannon fodder soldier's overdramatic death animations, the Tanks' THUMP and even the Iron Maiden's bizzare sexual moan idle sound), the levels are good enough that you won't get lost, and the game gives you a nice and steady supply of new guns to mess with, even if you don't go secret hunting. Even the orange and gray pallet isn't that bad after a few minutes. Quake 1 is still the best SP wise, but Q2 is a worthy successor to Quake 1, even if some of the charm that Quake 1 had is gone (the rest of the charm the Romero-era iD games had went away with Quake 3 :v:).

The expansion packs can get hosed though. Ground Zero has mediocre level design that's filled with boring "enhanced" versions of normal enemies that take forever to kill, while Reckoning has underpowered weapons that the game really wants you to use, bullet sponge Icaruses, too much emphasis on the Railgun and those lovely small laser turrets that do 20 damage a hit and fire really fast lasers that will occasionally predict your movement with no warning. I'm considering quitting Reckoning because I'm getting sick of being gunned down by a laser turret that pops out of nowhere when I'm fighting other enemies.

This is quite a few pages back but I also recently just went through the single player for Quake 2 after years of mucking about with it but never beating it. (Quake 2 was *the* deathmatch game for me back in the modem/early cable days, so I never did the SP. I had a ton of fun with it too. It's a blast to play through. It's decidedly different than the other iD games, and while some may consider it inferior, it didn't affect me like that. Granted I was running KMQ2 with high res textures/models etc.

Super glad you said the Mission packs suck for Q2 tho, because I was going to try them next, but if's not as good, I'll pass.

My next mission is beating Quake 1! (and then I'll probably go back and finally finish up Doom 1 & 2)

Actually, to expand on this, I think it would be a neat idea to have some kind of early FPS multiplayer night every Friday and/or Saturday. Every time I replay Infinity I get slowed down by Acme Station, the vacuum level. I always play on the hardest setting, and the level is nearly impossible as a result. There's a way to skip that and a few other levels, but I hate doing that.
