I'd really appreciate it if you guys could take a quick listen to one of my good friend's first mixes!

It's an hour mix of progressive/electro house with a bit of trance and techno thrown in as well.

Honestly, it's one of the better mixes I've heard recently.

Check it out, and any criticism is encouraged!

Discussion about music that doesn't involve avicii, deadmau5, or skrillx!

Watched 24 hour party people last night for the millionth time and had me going to a facebook group of oldravers who post about raves and shows in the early 90s. I was scrolling and looking at those terribly awesome early-90s CGI flyers and came across this one. It should note this is NOT my time period, so it's an archaeological dig in a way.

Just glancing at the flyer at face value most of the acts (even that small font "DJ JASON BENTLEY", music director of influential KCRW in LA. I'll get to him later.) have gone from doing insanely illegal raves to legitimate prominence. Underworld and Orbital never had any airplay whatsoever, yet can headline festivals. Chemical brothers played for the Queen! They made a song for the Olympics!

I don't know if this can be comparable to flyers of "zeplin opening for some unremarkable or unknown band lost to time itsself" because every act we're on equal footing.

I guess this flyer prompted the post is the small font Jason Bentley (who mostly spun DnB and a lot of the UK stuff in the 90s) came out 16 years later and introduced The Chemical Brothers at one of their most prestigious shows, The Hollywood bowl. Who were they playing that show for? KCRW.

Electronic music is awesome. Even avicii, deadmau5, and skrillx.

Well while probably not so big in the States, during the 90s all those acts were massive here in the UK (well with the exception of MBM and Loop guru, though they weren't exactly smalltime either). Though on saying that I thought that whole Big Beat thing actually got a grip on things in the States back then?

Flyers have really become a bit of a lost art I think. They're no way near as powerful as they used to be. Still needed but I think the internet has sadly usurped it a bit. I always used to love drunkenly grabbing every bit of card thrust under my face when I came out a club. One of my regrets over the years is not really keeping any flyers. Oddly enough I did find one or two recently that had fallen down the back of the stand my decks are on, though they were only from like 5-6 years ago and nowhere near as good as anything you see in any of the online archives.

The old Dreamscape artwork is still killer if you ask me. Again it's kind of early 90s Amiga cgi thing, kinda airbrushed look, really fantastic.

Some nowadays can still do flyers and posters justice. Here in Glasgow Vitamins have done some cracking posters. I still liked the slant cut one for the El-B dance, though I think everyone has commented on that.

In my search to find music to workout too I found that I really like listening to progressive house. Particularly one of Deadmau5's older work: Faxing Berlin.

I found some other Deadmau5 songs that works for my workouts but I'm hoping to find songs from other artists as well. Any recommendations?

For a Faxing Berlin style, Adam K & Soha is probably a pretty good bet

Funny when you consider this comment on that vid 'Karl Hyde once said in an interview "It's a bloody wonder how U2 never sued us that one, it's just a rip off of 'Get on Your Boots by them that we had looping in the studio. I'd gone upstairs to make brews for the boys but couldn't find the light switch. I started shouting to turn the light on! Turn the light on!, we found it fit well, tweeked it a bit more and changed the lyrics to 'You bring light in'.
and the other:
It was preceded in January 1995 by the single "Born Slippy", which featured the ".NUXX" mix as a B-side. The band has stated that the pounding, relentless rhythm and shouted lyrics of the track were originally meant "as a joke"[1], and the single received little attention. They have also said in a Guardian interview[2] that the song is intended to sound like an alcoholic's internal dialogue and that Karl Hyde was a functional alcoholic at the time. Underworld have claimed that the ".NUXX" name was inspired by a computer fault that added that suffix to the name of their working files.

Not that i'm picking on your taste it's just funny. I still think the second one is good even if unintentionally.

Its mainly focused on the indie-dance/electropop scene, and I'm going to try to highlight local (i.e, Toronto-based) talent as much as possible. Its fairly new, but if you're into the same kind of music, I think you'll find some good stuff!

I'm actually completely new to this genre and I'm actually quite ashamed of this. I've listened to a lot of Daft Punk before, but I never researched further into the genre. I was just recommended Madeon by a friend of mine, and I must say that I'm impressed.

There's another French guy called Sebastian who I see as a progenitor of the so-called "complextro" movement (terrible name, I know) that Madeon probably falls into. He's probably not as accessible as Madeon is, but here's one of his lighter remixes you might like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=deAKD2dZJoU

And of course, on the topic of French electro, there's also Justice. Here's a song with a cool video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50BBNZ-ejjU

Wolfgang Gartner makes some glitchy stuff like Madeon, too, and I know they're boths fans of each others' music. Here's a song/video with will.i.am (but I like the instrumental version better, to be honest):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GK5O5-LPB7g

Other than that, Russ Chimes makes some vaguely-retro-sounding feel-good music like Madeon, Feed Me makes glitchy electro like him, Far Too Loud does something similar, and Savant is a crazy kid who pumps out music like a machine. Plus there's always Deadmau5 and Skrillex, but I'm sure you know them by now.

P.S. Apparently Daft Punk is touring again next summer!
