What is Halo 4?

Halo 4 is 343 industries first go at making their very own Halo game. Since Bungie has moved on to bigger and better things we count on 343i to take up the reigns.

We pick up in Halo 4 where we left off in Halo 3. The Master Chief is stranded on half of Forward Unto Dawn approaching an ominous Forerunner planet. The date is now 2557 - four years, seven months and ten days after the split.

The main action of Halo 4 will take place on this planet. Uncovering the ruins of this forerunner planet and the machines that maintain it. The covenant does make a return as a rogue faction.

The best news of all, no flood.

What's new?

Here's the best repository for the latest and greatest news

Display

  • True native 720p with FXAA
  • New HUD, features subtle parallel movement during athletic actions and additional visual cues indicating that you are actually wearing a helmet.
  • Chief, Cortana and other characters animated with the assistance of motion capture.
Background
  • Cortana impending rampancy will be a critical theme as will be exploring Master Chief as a person.
  • Cortana has chosen a new visual identity whilst the Chief has been sleeping.
  • The Covenant, at least Elites and Grunts, return but are not the primary enemy.
  • The FUD eventually crash lands on Requiem, a planet enclosed in a massive Dyson Shell.
  • A new faction from Requiem is introduced. Like the Covenant they will have unique and different enemy types, weapons and equipment. "If anything, they're kind of elevated in terms of their intelligence and complexity relative to the Covenant."
  • Huge, alive environments - a piece of concept art depicts a floating air squid in a jungle setting.
  • The skybox is filled with massive pillars reaching down from above and the surrounding view is painted by the inside of the Dyson Shell.

Multiplayer
  • Game is split between Campaign and Infinity - the new term of the entire multiplayer experience separate from the Campaign.
  • Multiplier directly and in-directly ties into the Campaign.
  • Multiplayer features Spartan IV's - adult volunteers taken from the the best of special ops soldiers, equipped with a new version of the Mjolnir armor (lightweight variation) and deployed onboard the UNSC Infinity.
  • No Elites will be playable in multiplayer
  • The UNSC Infinity is the largest ship the UNSC has ever created. Over three kilometers long, it was designed with cutting edge technology and features some additional technological enhancements provided by the study of Forerunner technology - including faster and more accurate slipspace travel.
  • The UNSC is deployed on a top secret mission into deep space but will cross paths with the Master Chief during the campaign.
  • The Spartan IV's onboard train in the Infinity's "combat deck". The deck can simulate any known environment and plays host the the multiplayer games players are familiar with.
  • To prevent weapon camping, Infinity Slayer will deliver power weapons as drop pods to encourage map movement.

Cooperative
  • Firefight is absent and it is stated that there are no plans for it to return.
  • New Co-Op mode called Spartan Ops for up to four players in online Campaign-esque missions.
  • Spartan OPs introduces new movies sequences and missions on a weekly basis which tells the story of the UNSC Infinity's mission and battles the new Spartan IV's face.
  • Spartan Op missions are objective based and feature new content, events and locations each week. Spartan Ops missions also reward Spartan Points and feature selectable difficulty levels like Campaign.
  • Spartan Ops missions are not DLC, they are included in the overall Halo 4 package but it is unclear if the content is available on the disc or must be downloaded separately.

Loadouts
  • Loadouts are composed of a primary and secondary weapon, a grenade type, armor ability and modifications. It is unclear how the modification system works or what things it modifies or how.
  • Sprint is a standard armor ability now. Essentially allowing you to have two armor abilities at all times

Armor Abilities
  • Hard Light Shield: Allows users to a protective barrier of hard light which stops most small arms fire and some explosives.
  • Regeneration Field: Allows the user to release a short-range energy field that heals any nearby spartans.
  • Jet Pack: Allows users limited flight through a vertical lift propulsion system similar to that of EVA re-entry packs.
  • Thruster Pack: Enables a powerful burst of movement allowing the ability to evade or quickly close the gap.
  • Hologram: Allows users to generate an almost identical holographic decoy to to deceive enemies during combat.
  • Active Camo: Allows users to generate a visual effect astonishingly close to invisibility.
  • Auto-Sentry: An automatic turret which can be deployed to defend its user or command a key battlefield choke-point
  • Promethean Vision: Allows users to predict enemy signatures through walls and other hard surfaces.

Tactical Packages
  • Shielding: Speeds up your armors recharge rate.
  • Mobility: Allows unlimited sprint.
  • Resupply: Allows the recovery of grenades from fallen allies or foes.
  • AA Efficiency: Increases the rate at which energy recharges for armor abilities
  • Grenadier: Increases grenade carrying capacity.
  • Firepower: Allows the use of a primary weapon in the secondary weapon slot.
  • Fast-track: Allows the user to advance quicker in rank.
  • Requisition: In modes with personal ordnance, requisition lets the player request new choices when an ordnance is granted.
  • Wheelman: Increases the long term durability of your vehicle as well as how it reacts to EMP charges.

Support Upgrades
  • Stability: Steadies your weapon while being struck by incoming fire.
  • Ammo: Increases ammunition capacity for both starting weapons and ordnance drops.
  • Dexterity: Speeds up reload and weapon swapping.
  • Sensor: Increases motion sensor range.
  • Awareness: Allows the use of motion sensors while using a scope.
  • Explosives: Alters grenade performance, increasing blast radius and decreasing grenade damage received.
  • Ordnance Priority: In modes with personal ordnance, offers more frequent ordnance drops to the user.
  • Gunner: Increases how long a mounted weapon can fire before overheating as well as movement speed with detached turrets.

Gametypes
  • FFA Variant, Regicide. Lead slayer is "King" - each of the King;s kills raises his "bounty". The bounty is claimed by whomever kills the King.
  • In Team Slayer (not confirmed for other gametypes), players can respawn instantly after death if they choose. Additionally, power weapons are introduced into a game on a random timer and appear at random drop points on the map.
  • Grifball is it's own game mode with unique mechanics
  • Medals are returning (huge surprise) including new medals for "revenge kills" and for causing for distraction

Weapons

Spartan Points

Spartan Points is the new currency system in Halo 4. They will buy things such as armor, armor abilities, Spartan Ops missions, and more

Game Mechanics
  • Ball throwing.
  • Flag kill animations

Customization
  • Weapons and Armor can now be skinned with different graphics and colors
  • Helmets so far (9/3/12)

Forge

Forge mode makes a return with all new features and funtions. The full scale of the new forge is still not known but we are seeing things like:
  • Magnet points - Align objects easily
  • Lock objects - Don't worry about mis-clicking an object you placed already
  • Property Zone - Give players new properties depending on where they are in the zone
  • Object highlights - Highlight forge objects so you can know what you're about to select
  • Natural Lighting - Forge objects now take lighting effects from the map and other forge objects. Shadows, etc.

The best part of Reach (and ODST maybe?) was the fact that there was no Flood segments. Halo 4 continuing this trend bodes well for expletives per minutes while playing.

They worked reasonably well. I don't think it's worth making them until the game is actually out otherwise they'll fill up with people too soon.

From what I've read, the Flood was supposed to be more intelligent and have much better AI behind it but it kinda got squashed in the "MS wants a launch title" thing. That's why we got the Doom-era AI of "see player, shoot/charge at player." That said, I sure as hell won't be sad to see them go. "The Library" is still neck and neck with "Cortana" for my least favorite single player level.

I liked the idea of the flood. The whole weird parasite with a centralized hive intelligence is pretty cool, especially in Halo 2 when they bring the Gravemind into it. The problem is that the flood you fight in game is so completely separate from that idea that they might as well be different factions. The only time in the game it seems like the individual flood forms might actually have some intelligence is the end of Halo 3 when they don't fight you for all of 2 minutes.

Glad this thread got made, I'm so pumped for this game. I haven't heard a single thing yet that concerns me, though I will miss Martin O'Donnell as composer.

One thing I'm wondering about, and I hope they make some sort of announcement soon, is whether you can set different armor suits for different loadouts. Like, can I pick for example a big, Grenadier-type armor with a female Spartan for my character with the Gunner support ability and AR and a sleeker, Operator-type armor on a male Spartan for the character with Awareness and a BR? Probably not, because you'd need a default one for the playlists that don't use loadouts, but as a big dumb dork who likes playing dress-up with his cyborg supersoldiers it would be pretty cool to me if you could do that.

I imagine your armor settings are completely independent of your loadout, but as long as the armory stuff is as streamlined as it is in Reach, or more, and assuming time between matches remains pretty consistent, it shouldn't be a problem to switch your armor around when you feel like playing a different "class."

I doubt you'll be able to change armor mid-game, of course, but that could cause issues for other reasons.

Anyone else annoyed at the proximity between this and BLOPS 2? I know there isn't a lot of crossover between fandoms here, but BLOPS 2 looks like just enough of a thematic departure that I'm interested in jumping in to see what it's all about, but drat if I'm going to stop playing Halo for it, and gently caress joining in after a month when everyone has everything unlocked and knows all the overpowered builds. Guess I'm gonna have to juggle games, which is never easy to do for me.

The concept behind the Flood was cool. It just brought a ton of bad gameplay choices together in one level. Enemies which come back to life, low ammo counts and obscure level design. It didn't help that most times when the Flood attacked, you were on your own. It would have been cool to watch a Flood/Covenant fight.

I'm hopeful for Halo 4 though. I think I'll have to get back into Reach since 4 will be my goto shooter for the time being.

I...I actually liked the flood best in Halo 1. :negative:

I know the Library gets ragged on alot (rightfully so), but when I was younger and running through Legendary for my very first time on CE, the flood actually felt like they lived up to the name: a flood of mindless vicious killers, with every fight expending huge chunks of your ammo stocks. Also, fighting them off with the Assault Rifle and the Shotgun just felt awesome, especially for the old Aliens-fan in me who loved the old Assault Rifle with 60 rounds in every mag. There was tension to fighting the old flood that just did not get matched in the sequels.

Despite my love of the Halo 1 flood, Reach iss probably my favorite of the Bungie Halo campaigns. No terrible implementation of the flood, atmospheric as hell, a genuine sense of just how screwed you were. Excited as hell to see what 343 bring to Halo 4.

It put too cliche and "human" a face on the Flood. The Halo 1 Flood spoke for themselves. :gonk:

I feel like this too, considering I've got them both preordered. I think they're different enough that it won't be too big a challenge. BLOPS 2 is a more realistic game (relatively speaking) so if I finish class and feel like the kind of combat where you get up in one person's face and have a one-on-one fight with them personally, where each individual showdown is a test of skill and forethought, I'll play Halo. If I want a fast-paced, bullets-flying-everywhere, hit him first or you're dead sort of experience, I can play Black Ops 2. Hopefully, anyway. I know there's a good chance I'll be staring wistfully at the two games struggling to decide.

Although BLOPS has Nuketown 2025 since I preordered it, that's going to be a huge argument in its favor.

This literally happened on every level from Two Betrayals onward in the original game. They'd tear each other apart and you could either ignore them and leg it past or mop up the survivors. The dual bridges bit where the Elites are taking on dozens of the bastards, the tunnels between the canyons and the exit point thereof, the mass brawl by the final set of Banshees, the Spec Ops teams on Keyes and The Maw (especially the latter, where the Hunters are going apeshit firing fuel rod rounds everywhere).

The best things about the original game that none of the later ones seemed to understand most of the time was the freedom and openness of Halo and the Silent Cartographer; big grenade explosions bouncing around the place and mad physics to play around with; the fun to be had on Attack on the Control Room where you save the marines as you find them then charge into the penultimate canyon with a dozen of them them backing you up, and the chaos that ensues; the Elites on Legendary having enough health for their AI to shine, making them tough but fair; the three-way battles between the Flood, Covenant and yourself; and no boss battles, just a mad, frantic rush in a jeep to get the gently caress out before everything blows up.

Those were the best things about the single player but instead we got invisible walls and no freedom whatsoever ("RETURN TO THE BATTLEFIELD"); nerfed grenades for the sake of boring balance; lovely Drones and boring Brute bullet sponges that lacked the gunplay ballet finesse of hiding behind a rock waiting for your shield to recharge knowing there was an Elite the other side of that rock in exactly the same position, and that his pals were probably flanking you right that second; lovely dual-wielding because 'it's badass'; being limited to three, maybe four marine buddies max (though to be fair, being able to tool them up with sniper rifles, rocket launchers and fuel rod cannons loving owned); instant death snipers when the developers themselves had previously said walking into an area and dying instantly to something you can't see was no fun, hence never used in the first game; interminably poo poo and conventional boss battles; and, in the last two games, no Flood because all the games' faults seemed to mistakenly get placed on them instead of the aspects of design where Bungie really dropped the ball.

The Flood really were among the least of the series problems, it baffles me as to why everything else gets ignored because "yay guyz, there's no Flood in this one!!!11".

Seriously, to me, the Brutes hosed the series far worse than the Flood ever did.

I think I'm in the exact opposite camp to this. I've pretty much played only COD online since COD4, with the occasional stop gap for Gears and Halo. But BLOPS2 looks really bad to me. Maybe it's the goofy story or the boring future setting, but Halo 4 has really peaked my interest.

I don't know about how the new tech guns look like, though. Halo has always had this visual style thing about it I liked but couldn't quite place my finger on, sort of like Valve's games. The blocky floaty stuff kind of gets in the way of that for me.

So the Limited Edition basically gives you a film (any idea whether it'll be an HD download thing or on a DVD?), a nice metal box, and a bunch of random multiplayer / BTS stuff for $100? The Reach Limited Edition was $20 cheaper ($40 if you bought it off Amazon) and it came with a pretty neat ONI package.

H3/ODST have the best campaigns, and that is absolutely, positively, unquestionably objective fact. All of Reach's levels felt small by comparison, which is odd for a game set in a planetary war.

Also I hope 4's campaign takes a lot of cues from Metroid Prime, even though that will never happen.

I preordered this one, but I don't know why people are getting the legendary edition these days.

Because the price for the game and dlc alone almost comes out even to the price of legendary, and you get a cool medium length movie, and a weird art book. Mostly it's the free avatar items though.

I never understood why people liked getting bonus things with video games until I pre-ordered skyrim and got a fancy papyrus paper map in the game case. I wasn't expecting that at all, and it was amazing.

I think I would say to my daughters if they were to ask me this question... A shitpost is the greatest gift that you can give someone, the ultimate gift of giving and don't give it to someone lightly, that's what I would say.
So, do we have a confirmed list of vehicles? I mostly care about ruining people with the Banshee.

Here's what Halo Nation has to say:

So Banshees (or Type-26 Ground Support Aircraft as the sperglords at Halo Nation call it) are in. There haven't been any videos of players controlling one, but you can see them in the campaign demo from the latest E3 so I can't imagine they wouldn't let you fly them.
