It's sort of a bummer they could never get the logistics worked out to properly run it in NYC, as a true race in the city would have been amazing but I think this will be just as awesome and probably a more exciting, higher speed, race anyway. Looks like I know where I'm going to be around June of next year.

Don't F1 cars make enough downforce to where they could drive upside down on the roof of a tunnel? I'm disappointed they didn't take the opportunity.

In theory, yes. However, I hear the engines will not run inverted (which makes sense, oil fills the head, not the sump). Also, I know for a fact there are signs and things on the roof of the tunnel. It's be really crappy to have a collision, upside down, 20 feet off the ground at 190 mph.

Would love to see them try it.

It seems to be because I've seen similar incidents in the Russian videos. I also love how that dude must've been running for a while cause as soon as he runs himself into the car you can tell he's completely out of breath.

"Sports car" is one of the most vague terms out there. I think a stock NA meets most definitions. Handling-wise, it's more precise than a lot of cars, it's good ergonomically, and it's involving.

This. It keeps the rear end planted by acting like a giant air dam. That track is more or less a circle, constant turning, and the guy never lets off the gas.

I think you underestimate modern F1 cars that can pull 5g in a turn. They dont need stagger, if theyve got the speed aero will do the rest

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlLSWVkpxF8

The *lowest* speed through that sequence of turns is around 200km/h (124mph), and that is with less than maximum downforce typically available

It would certainly be interesting to see which would be faster. F1 cars do have great aero, but the stagger does more for the car than you might imagine. Not to mention those dirt cars also have aero, albeit not as efficient as F1.

Like was said, stagger is not aero. Expecting an F1 car to be as fast on an oval as an oval car is the same as expecting an oval car to be as fast on a road course as an F1 car.

This is why people poo poo on ovals, they don't understand it's not just about left turns. The mechanical advantage a car with built in stagger has over a road racing car is absolutely critical, and on a 3/8ths mile oval, aerodynamics in the traditional sense do not work. The only aero the cars I posted use are the lexan sideboards. They use that aero for a completely different purpose than an F1 car uses aero for, and an F1 car does not have them.

Throw those cars on a banked superspeedway, or a road course, and an F1 car would absolutely destry them. On a flat bullring like that, no way in hell.

The sequence you posted shows them entering a high speed corner with the aero already working, giving them excellent turn in, enabling them to hold their speed. They'd never have a chance to get the car planted like that on a 3/8ths oval.

e- now, if you took an F1 car, designed stagger into it, and put some sideboards on it, well....I'd pay to see that thing run.

Seizure Meat
Jul 23, 2008

by Smythe
More or less, yeah. The more it gets sideways, the more aerodynamic force is applied to the car to prevent it from getting sideways. The 80's were the heyday for this type of car, it's fairly rare to see it nowadays. They actually had sanctioned race series that allowed sideboard usage.

This was an 80's record attempt car. Note the offset of driver and engine position, and the difference in the sheetmetal covering the left front and right front tire. The idea is to get the most weight to the left of the car, and put the widest tires possible on the right, as far away from the weight as you can get it. Outside circumference of the right side tires is also larger than the left, that gives you stagger. Picture a paper cup on its side, then push it, same principle.

One of the comments pretty much nails it. It's a model engine, and isn't really designed for torque loads. I know Conley made a 1/4 scale RC T-bucket once, I don't know what all had to be done to get it to run straight. The dude with the 'Digger just bought one of the desktop engines and is making it work for him.

Stuff like that isn't exactly plug and play, but judging by his fab skills I bet he'll get it going right.
