I was a passenger in a V10 R8 doing 225km/h down an inner-city road with a normal speed limit of 60km/h and in need of some thorough repair work (don't worry, the road was closed off). It wasn't even remotely jarring or twitchy. It was completely composed and planted. Though having Tom Kristensen in the driver's seat did help a bit ;)

It is a goddamn rocket ship with four wheel drive and impeccable build quality, and capable of long-distance touring in comfort. I still wouldn't own one, but only because I have an irrational dislike for all VAG products.

Your dislike for VAG products is probably quite rational. Although if you can afford an R8, you can surely afford the repairs to it.

This is the best description of the R8 I have ever read. There was one parked next to an SLS up at Silverstone the other day, I only noticed because it was conspicuously not the SLS. But in isolation, yeah, it's a really pretty car! It looks sleek and sexy and fast, and then something more interesting pulls up and it might as well be a 911*.

*please note, I'm not trolling here, it's just that 911's are kind of anonymous, which suits them just fine. And at least Porsche compensates for it on the GT3 by providing some pretty garish paint jobs.

That and water to air cooling is so efficient and very heavy, why have 2 coolers?

Could the outlet pipe thing be because the intakes are also right the gently caress there? Getting rid of the heat before the intercooler makes sense, but maybe not if it's just going to heat the air going in anyway.

As for the two water to air cores, it seems they share a circulation system? Possibly easier to source/package two smaller single cores than a larger core and split piping or a dual inlet dual outlet core.

Anyway, more fun piping!

The turbo outlet temp is WAY hotter than the engine bay will ever be. Engine bay of a moving car is pretty much ambient. Compressor outlet temps are like 300F or more.

However, I'm not convinced you get much heat transfer to or from air moving quickly in a pipe or manifold. Never been sold on those phenolic manifold spacers either. On that audi to make 1100hp each turbo is moving almost 600cfm through 3" pipe which works out to air velocities of over 100mph. An air molecule is only in there for a fraction of a second and not a lot of cooling/heating is going to happen.

Also it looks like the cold side is just powdercoated black for looks, not insulated or anything.

On a related note I get so mad when people buy giant e-bay bar and plate intercoolers. Yeah it flows a lot and has a low pressure drop but it doesn't do poo poo to actually cool the charge air.

Stylish and compact packaging was obviously the first goal with that system, symmetry is something really intertwined into that design. Parallel cooling is a bit of a pain with single pump/reservoir/exchangers, and series cooling would make for a cool intercooler and a significantly hotter intercooler, which is just plain bad design.

I wouldn't have done dual coolers, I wouldn't have coated the turbo outlet pipes, and there's probably other things that would be changed to make it more simple, possibly more reliable, and maybe even better overall performance.

I wonder if the build quality of a v10 r8 is much better than a non-first-year gallardo... the ride quality difference is probably a result of a couple years worth of spring and shock rate refinement.
