This was the smartest thing Amazon ever did. I buy so many ebooks on impulse that I probably never would have read if I had to go to a bookstore and browse for something. Just one drat click, and its there waiting for me by the time I get off work and walk to the Metro train.

Hey, I was just reading the blurb about The Emperor's Soul and it said that it was set in the same world as Elantis. I thought it was going to be in a separate world, so looks like I'm going to have to actually read Elantis now. Oh well.

Same world, but in a far far away lsland nation that has nothing to do with Elantris or its magic system. It might reference a few things from Elantris, but Brandon said it is definately not necessary to have read it first.

The two one star reviews for Legion on Amazon are hilarious. Do people seriously not do any research and just throw their money at things they know nothing about?

Legion is awesome, this is the second one-off (for now) book of his that I want him to continue. Just devoured the book in 30 minutes on my kindle.

I really can't stand people that give books one-star ratings based on the price. I know it ultimately doesn't do anything because Amazon is terrible, but I always hit the report button when I see them.

I just finished reading Legion and I thought it was relatively good. I'm not much of a fantasy/scifi reader, but the price was right so I took the plunge. Not a bad purchase at all.

One thing that really pleased me was Sanderson's depiction of a main character with schizophrenia. I hope he sticks with this characterization of Leeds. As a person with schizophrenia it's extremely rare to see a positive depiction of anyone with this mental illness. All too often schizophrenics are depicted as being violent monsters who will snap in an instant and run amok.

As well I appreciate his not depicting it as multiple personalities and even calling out the difference between dissociative identity disorder and schizophrenia. He gets it.

Finished Legion in one sitting last night, and drat, that was a good book. I was legitimately a bit mad when it ended, because I wanted there to be more of it.

Hopefully he'll do more with Stephen Leeds in the future, because the concept was pretty awesome.

I thought I was going insane for a second.

Just finished Legion.

That was loving cool. It reminded me of the old pulp heroes like Doc Savage or The Shadow. Eccentric millionaire heroes with a group of assistant specialists. Albeit, updated and modernized.

It's impressive how Sanderson becomes a noticeably better writer with each story. Legion was even genuinely, unironically funny.

That's basically Sandersons biggest flaw (and it is huge) he just can't be loving funny (and he sometimes has trouble with interpersonal conversations). I loved Way of Kings but I still cringe when I think of the court jester and his "jokes".

In that book Wit is specifically there to make the people of the court uncomfortable, though.

I think that's just you defending the author by saying he made Wit intentionally unfunny instead of trying to make him clever and failing completely. I don't buy that he meant to do it because all the other "clever" characters are the exact same way.

No, the others were bad. Shallan? Horrid!

But Wit was a humorous hipster, hyper-expanding the horizons of horrible jokes before it was cool!

I laughed several times during Alloy of Law and and The Way of Kings but my humor might be broken.

If you go into knowing that the humor is bad it takes on a new light and seems intentional at that point and it starts to get funny. Almost as if the characters are self aware of how bad their jokes are and go with it.

I distinctly got the impression Wit was there to annoy all the nobles. He's fairly nice and much less annoying to the main characters who are less snobbish than the rest of the nobles. And remember the rule that anyone can kill the King's Wit, they just have to give up their title (or something similar) - you wouldn't have that rule if the Wit was there to be truly amusing rather than intentionally annoying to everyone.

I'm not going to defend his dad humor in the other books, and his witty dialog sucks almost all the time (but I think he's getting better), I just think that it specifically was meant to be that one noble guy trolling the other nobles.

Brandon tried to sell the concept first, then wrote the story to prove that it could work. Then he sold the rights to Lionsgate. He recently tweeted that he would write a sequel, but probably only when he takes a break and flies somewhere.

No, that's like saying GRRM is bad at humor because Patchface isn't funny.

Both him and Wit personify the "wise fool" archetype, where someone who normally spouts nonsense has a lot more knowledge of the workings of the world/future than the smart folks.

e: VVV Yeah, but my point is that neither character is supposed to be funny. If you want to point at bad Sanderson humor look at Shallan and her pseudo-Victorian humor. VVV
