More or less, yeah. The more it gets sideways, the more aerodynamic force is applied to the car to prevent it from getting sideways. The 80's were the heyday for this type of car, it's fairly rare to see it nowadays. They actually had sanctioned race series that allowed sideboard usage.

If this is the case, then why does the sideboard go down nearly the entire length of the car? There's a reason planes only have the rudder at the back - in the front it actually makes side-slip problems worse, in the center it adds no torque. Only a rear-mounted vertical stabilizer works, and the further back, the better (because it can be smaller, and create less drag/weigh less).

My best guest would be because when it does go sideways, it creates a huge force towards the inside of the turn to help with turning, instead of causing the car to straighten out and head right at the wall, like what happens when the tires start to grip again when counter-steering. In fact, since that thing doesn't seem to be balanced to have the center of pressure aft of the CG, I'd bet the "helps move the car into the turn" is actually what they're aiming for. When turning left, the results are the same as a vertical stabilizer - gets the car moving where you're aiming it, by creating a thrust force in that direction, and a drag force against the side-slip direction.

One thing to note: a plane yaws around its aerodynamic center. A car, however, has its front end anchored by the front wheels, so in the case of the sprint car, everything behind the front axle would swing to the right, and the sideboard would be pushed back to the left along its entire length - no counter-force back to the outside to destabilize things. Drag and mass of the board really aren't concerns either, since the aero benefit of a larger surface far outweighs those negatives for a ground vehicle.

Aerodynamic forces should still act around the center of pressure, regardless of being anchored to the ground.

If, for instance, you had a vertical stabilizer on the front, it would still create a force into the direction of rotation for the front, coupled with the rear trying to rotate out. Best case scenario, it makes no difference because the front tires kept it anchored. Worst case, it makes it worse.

Which is probably why F1 and LMP cars have their vertical stabs set up so their CP is rearward of the CG (more effective than an entire sideboard when the purpose is keeping the car from yawing on straights.)

This was an 80's record attempt car. Note the offset of driver and engine position, and the difference in the sheetmetal covering the left front and right front tire. The idea is to get the most weight to the left of the car, and put the widest tires possible on the right, as far away from the weight as you can get it. Outside circumference of the right side tires is also larger than the left, that gives you stagger. Picture a paper cup on its side, then push it, same principle.

Sort of. They were essentially working in tandem to get closer to the car that was in front of both of them. The end goal would be for the drafter to pass the draftee, but this move was designed to get both of them closer to that front car.

The drafter couldn't go as fast if he wasn't drafting
The draftee couldn't go as fast if wasn't getting pushed by the drafter

With a common goal in mind, they made a gentleman's agreement at 180mph to team up to gain ground on the car up the road

End result: they both got closer to the guy in front, and they can battle it out to see who wins from there.

This is all conjecture based on my bike racing experience, but I think it's reasonable logic.

Not really, the car he's pushing is his teammate. He also was blocking the inside for the guy in front rather than having a go.

The better answer to this is low buck rednecks at small tracks don't know better. The picture I posted from the 80's shows a guy with a better grasp on aero forces than the videos.

You're joking, right?

Literally every one of those riders in that video could have been written up for some kind of moving violation; people riding on hard shoulders, cutting solid lines...the list goes on and on, and this is even before we get to fleeing a police roadblock. Also, unless you have made arrangements with the police for escort (which I'm probably safe to say, they didn't), a mass ride like that should stick to one or two lanes only, not blocking an entire highway. Christ, even when the Angels ride into town, they ride two-abreast in one lane only - if a quasi-legal motorcycle gang can do it, why can't these morons?

I hope every one of those riders gets the book thrown at them.

No, not really, it just looks like they're riding freely because there's hardly any other traffic around.

I know they're not going to include footage of them arsing around, but I really don't see anything that'd cause me concern until the roadblock avoidance nonsense starts. They might be breaking the letter of the law, but they're travelling at sensible speed and aren't popping wheelies every thirty seconds or swerving around, so I'm more inclined towards keeping an eye on them to ensure things continue like that.

I commented a while ago about how the tire still has a regular tread so it needs to be replaced just as often as a regular tire and that lateral forces would just destroy those thread rods by placing them in bending. The response I got was just anger and misplaced blame on the tire industry.

Not to mention the rubber layer that's between the outer tire layer and inner steel hoop and bolted to the inner wheel is going to wear out from all the flexing. Also "part of the car and not something you'll need to replace." Uh...there are a lot of parts of a car that can need replacing, some pretty regularly.

Driving on anything other than a perfectly manicured highway will spell the end for those steel rings. In a conventional tire, the air and sidewall can stand a bit of deformation when hitting an object at speed; raised manhole cover, square edged pothole, debris. This seems like it would transfer right through the solid rubber tread and mangle the rings / snap the 'spokes'.
