My recollection is the same as your intuition: that they're there to keep the bank from eroding. I'd read before that people have done that along river banks that didn't have trees to hold the soil in place. As an aside, it looks like you went through Coalinga (Coaling Station A). Is it as desolate a poo poo-place as I've been told?

This 66 Chevy Nova came into my shop for an inspection last Saturday: In addition to the custom paint and wheels, it had a built small block that the owner claims made almost 500hp. Sounded mean and had a noticeable lope in the idle. The original front suspension had long since worn out in several areas, it's coming back later in the week for a complete overhaul.
