So here's an awesome thing:

http://forum.speeddemosarchive.com/post/agdq_2013_prizes_103.html

SimonViklund posted:

Hi, I have thought of what I consider a great and unique concept for a prize.

I compose and remix/interpret music for a living, and I dare say my work is very appreciated amongst gamers. Most notably, I did the new version of the Bionic Commando soundtrack for the remake, named Bionic Commando Rearmed, released by Capcom on PSN, XBLA and Steam in 2008.

I love the music of old NES games. My grandmother died of cancer and my aunt recently got diagnosed. I took part of the last AGDQ live stream charity event and donated money without hesitation - the live stream concept it great! I want to see this thing grow and I want to actively be a part of increasing the size of donations. So, for future events I have come up with a way to my skill - making music - a prize for the charity event. Here's the idea:

1) The organizers of the charity event decides on a arbitrary time period - say 12 hours from the start of the event.

2) Anyone who donates money during this period is encouraged to submit the name of an videogame song with their donation (or a link to the song on YouTube - or some other way to identify the song, since NES songs don't really have names.)

3) After the arbitrary time period is over, the organizers determine who made the largest single donation during the time period. Needless to say, only donations that had a song name attached to them are eligible. Maybe these donations aren't eligible to winning other prizes, to not make it possible to win several prizes with one donation - this way, people who submit song names with their donations enter a prize category of their own. But I digress...

4) The winner's name and the song name is announced live on the live stream, and this is where my work starts: I will now start working on a remix/interpretation of this song right there and then.

5) If it's technically possible, it would be very cool if the live stream could cut over to a web camera at my place every once in a while, and show me working on this song. I mean, like a 10 second clip between two games in the marathon, and maybe a "how's it coming along?" sort of question every 1-2 hours. If this is not technically possible, I can register my own channel on, say, Twitch - and stream the music production over there so that anyone can check in on me at any time. However we solve it technically, I think it's important that people really "get" that the music production is happening real-time - that the music production is "live" too. This makes the entire thing a lot cooler. I think a fully produced song would take at least six hours to make.

6) When the song is done, it is sent over to the organizers as an mp3. This mp3 is put up as a free download on the charity event's website along with the winning donator's name and possibly a message from the donator (e.g. why he/she likes that particular song so much), and this is also announced on the live stream - anything to emphasize the prestige it significates to have been the one who chose the song to be remixed, thereby increasing the value of this rather abstract prize. I mean, the mp3 is a free-for-all download - so the winner doesn't get the song for himself/herself: It's the "honor" of getting to choose which song gets remixed/interpreted that is the prize, so it's important to infuse some prestige in this.

The prize concept can be expanded upon: Needless to say, the idea isn't restricted to me. For example: We could hook up with famous game music remixers/interpreters over at OC Remix and have several people contributing songs/prizes. With enough remixers, every 4 hour period there could be a new music remix winner!

The prize concept isn't even restricted to the art of music production: We could get artists from Deviant Art (or some other community of talented CG artists) to contribute - but instead of music that is chosen, created and put up as a free download it could be desktop backgrounds!

What's cool is that we get more people involved from other internet communitys (that are still game related), certainly increasing the crowd interested in the charity event and in turn increasing the number of possible donators. Also, it's cool that prizes get made during the actual marathon, and then get digitally distributed for free! It's very "internet age" and modern, if I may say so. Anyway, I think this could generate a lot of attention - so let's make it happen!

TL;DR: Those who donate the most money wins the prize of having his/her favorite game soundtrack song remixed by me (and possibly other music composers).

Despite some awful bomb drop RNG ruining a 2 minute lead in Majora's Mask any%, zfg regained a 1:40 lead thanks to a good fight against TwinMold. He's at the final battle now: http://www.twitch.tv/zfg1

Edit: 1:47:09, good for a new WR (the previous was 1:47:47 by Japanese runner SVA). He's not really happy with it, though.

Cosmo is -4:27 on his splits from his 4:57:04 Wind Waker any%J run and just beat the Wind Temple. If he maintains that pace, he'll beat Demon9's WR time by a little under two minutes. He also has like 2500 people watching him right at this moment, which is pretty wild. http://www.twitch.tv/cosmowright

He's doing things out of order compared to the splits from his old run. That +27 is meaningless at this point though he did lose some time in the Labyrinth.

GoronGuy is over 4 minutes ahead of his personal best time for Majora's Mask 100% (Eng. version) late into the run. His PB is only 1:20 behind the world record time itself, so this definitely is WR potential. If he can save another 1:30 or so he could get the sub 6 hours: http://www.twitch.tv/goronguy

Edit: 6:01:07, beating the previous 100% eng record by over three minutes!
