I may have hit a glitch. Climbing the rope towards the end of Leon's campaign but as soon as I get 20 meters or closer towards the end he falls back down to about 25 meters. Even if I do the QTE that makes me jump ahead a bunch.

Edit restarted the checkpoint and it was fine. I tried holding the shoulder buttons longer and maybe that was the trick? But why would it let me climb to a certain point if I was doing it "wrong" then?

Christ, that prologue plus the first half hour of Leon's campaign are absolutely diabolical. Things finally seem to get going once you hit the demo area, but my god that introduction was poor.

The tutorial stage isn't that bad, but it's a tutorial stage, so really the best you can hope for is that it isn't too condescending and ends reasonably swiftly.

Agreed utterly on the start of Leon's campaign though. I understand they're trying to build the horror, but it just winds up being horrifically tedious, and you wind up covering the exact same stuff you went over less than a few minutes ago (assuming you started with Leon, haven't tried the others yet).

The one thing I do miss though, is the weapon upgrading from the last two games. That's the one puzzling change to my eyes so far, since it worked so well, and you felt a real sense of progression, going from a wimpy peashooter with bent sights to a triple-barrelled deathbringer. Skills don't feel as tangible, unless they're doing something visible.

I'd say it's a buy. There's a Left 4 Dead kind of mode here you can drop into peoples games as creatures which is pretty cool. Tough as a regular zombie though.

Personally, don't let the demo colour your view of the game, one way or another. I for one thought the demo was terrible, but I'm enjoying the game itself. Maybe wait til the price drops if you're still unsure, but I'd call it a buy.

I can see why this game is splitting opinions so badly. So many great additions, but so many other baffling decisions.

My biggest gripe so far is the invincible zombies. Come on. Even in the original game you could shoot the zombies on the floor. This is the sixth game, even if they couldn't come up with something new, making the obvious ambushers invincible until you step on them is just pure laziness with a hefty dose of bullshit heaped on top.

Sounds like I'm in line for worse things though. :ohdear:

I've got this coming on rental tomorrow but the small amount of time me and my main co-op buddy have to play games together is taken up by Borderlands 2 at the moment and I'm not keen on playing a story based game with a randomer.

The AI controlled character is invincible and has infinite ammo. You can even stop it from helping you if you go down by buying and equipping a skill called Lone Wolf.

Split screen is like RE5's, with the standard aspect ratio maintained.

Okay for fucks sake, can you only buy skills when you're not in the middle of a chapter? I did it from the main menu between chapters but I can't seem to access it from the in game menus.

poo poo is annoying. When you press select and hit set skill or whatever it won't let me do anything. I do only have 3 skills in all 3 slots though so maybe I just can't do anything because I have nothing to switch out. I'm enjoying this so far but I feel like I'm missing something obvious with the skill stuff.

I quite disliked the most of the first chapter with Leon, but then my brother showed up and we co-oped through the second chapter and I enjoyed it a hell of a lot more.

Then we played a few rounds of mercenaries, which seemed much more fun than the main game.

What skills are people going for? The breakaway one seems essential, since the grabs take off an utterly ridiculous amount of health and they are quite difficult to break out of without that particular skill equipped. I tried out the critical hit one too, but it didn't seem to make all that much difference.

1.Over the shoulder does that. You still see all that you need to.

2. You mean the start button? Cause that pauses the game right there no problem on single player

3. You buy skills between chapters

4. You don't upgrade weapons, you buy skills to improve yourself overall including damage

Yes they should have included a manual because I don't feel they do enough to cover it tutorial wise, and the tutorial beginning is slow (for a reason story wise) but then throws you right into things without a proper explanation of how melee works. They really didn't think that through.

But once melee is mastered, hell that's primarily what I've been using on people as Jake. He can melee flying units as well if you are good enough!

Edit: Upon more thought, I think most people's problems with the game comes from such a sucky start and a tutorial that doesn't fully teach you how to play. of course, trial and error helps out a lot, but it can turn people off from playing the drat thing if they constantly get their butts handed to them.

Kinda echoing it. I set my lobby up perfectly normal, pick my character and no one ever joins. It's not even set to private!

Then when it comes to parts with characters meeting up it really sucks alot out of it when "Searching for partner (60)" counts all the way down and I have 3 AI's helping me instead of a team of dudes.

I went in completely blind and hate it a few hours in. It (too often) plays as on - rails as Call of Duty with even MORE cutscene to gameplay ratio and worse controls, and even MORE QTEs (didn't everyone ask for LESS after RE4 - what the flying hell?). I might sell you my copy for like twenty bucks by tomorrow if it doesn't pick up if you absolutely want to play it.

For comparison, I like RE1-3 in theory, even if the controls annoy me, think RE4 is so good, i bought it on two different systems, and thought RE5 was a disappointment as a follow-up, even if I beat it a couple of times and played multiplayer for a while.

I'm really not seeing the worse controls at all. Admittedly I started with Jake's campaign but other than switching the crosshairs to lasers and adjusting the aim/camera speed a bit, I haven't had much in the way of problems.

That said I'm not exactly thrilled by the game either. It's in no way a 4/10 unless the other campaigns are way way worse than Jake's, but it's obssessed with setpieces so far. I don't think I've had an actual moment where I'm just shooting things. as opposed to running away from unstoppable monsters or explosions or exploding monsters or fighting gimmick bosses. There has't been much in the way of downtime and it really could use some.

Darko
Dec 23, 2004

Yeah, I'll chime in and say there's no way the controls are worse. I did cut my brightness up a bit, because the overly shadowed graphics are just an arbitrary limitation (and make the graphics look better), meaning that I probably see more than a lot of people and react sooner.

I'd agree with, like a 5/10 rating so far if only because I play REs to wander around and gently caress myself over, and playing like Heavy Rain + CoD is inexcusable since I -hate- the "can only kind of walk to the right and left for ten feet on each side with a bunch of cutscenes" style of gameplay, and even with that, it literally gets interrupted every 5 minutes with you losing control of your character for a cutscene, which is inexcusable.

edit: Here's an example of stupid. At the start of Leon's campaign (not the prologue), you SHOULD be able to fiddle with the controls with no one around to get a feel of things. Yet, the game cuts you off from accessing the item menu, or even aiming with your gun, even though you are walking around with your gun in your hand. This (the game in general and the thought process behind) is just infuriating game design. You get control soon after - but it's just irritating to walk around a bit with no control, and it's a microcosm of how the game works in a nutshell.

Throw the bomb far enough away from the body, usually way off to the side. You're trying to lure him away from the body long enough for Sherry to get the card.

What happens in 3rd Street stays in 3rd Street.

I just finished Leon's campaign and had a loving whale of a time. I can't wait to get some co-op on the go for this even though i'm sure it'll be super difficult, considering how little ammo I had even with using the knife pretty religiously. Chapter 1 felt like RE2 all over again, Chapter 2 felt like RE4 but co-op, and Chapter 3 felt like RE5. Beautiful.

While I didn't originally like the lack of buyable weapons/upgrades, it grew on me as I realised that rather than all the enemies taking far more shots the further into the game you go, everything actually stays pretty constant and your guns are really balanced because of it. Melee is stupidly powerful though, I ran into a corridor full of zombies (like 25) and took them all out without taking a hit with the slide tackle > stab on floor move. In fact, the key to most things in this when you're struggling to avoid damage is to be laying on the floor.

The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the way I would be put in an area where I couldn't reach anything with melee/shotgun, but had to protect my partner/shoot something far away/whatever, and had no ammo. The game spawns a couple of regular zombies that you can stab up for bullets but they don't spawn very fast. None of the bosses really seemed cheap, though one got a bit repetitive.

I would have been happy if Leon's story was the entire game. Can't believe I get another two and a bit campaigns along with it, this is amazing.

QTE's loving rule by the way and if you don't like them you're a big baby. The QTE's in this game are the easiest in the series too, and the only reason you see more of them is because enemies don't melee you, they grab you as their main attack. I'd much rather hammer at a button and actually see a positive effect for it (this both increases tension and player interaction, duh) that just get grabbed, bitten, fall over or some poo poo like that.

If you're on the fence buy it.

edit - why is it Resident Evil always seems to incite the most split positive and negative reviews after Final Fantasy?
