I'm almost too interested to not go look at it, but the "no interior except front seats" and "NO TEST DRIVES" makes me wary.... also the part where there are no pictures. Still seems like a cool concept for a swap.

I have a car like this, ae101 trueno coupe with 4AGZE, LSD gearbox etc, came like that stock from japan though, no swap. I really like it.

Friend of mine has an ae92 hatchback with 4AGE swap, stripped interior like that one, and it is stupid fast.

You should check it out and take pictures.

Actually, high mileage ones can hit low $40's.
There is a guy in Austin who keeps trying to sell his beat-to-poo poo one for $35k but it needs all kinds of work.

That had no engine, and was a pile of rust.

Well, it was an X1/9, so it could have been factory rust.

I am more pissed at them for killing a pair of Crown Imperials for a tie-in on the lovely green hornet movie.

That red '90 Testarossa has an inline flat 12 that makes a staggering... 380HP. I'm kind of shocked to see that. How much did they cost, new? Was that "supercar" level horsepower in 1990?

rscott
Dec 10, 2009
Well if you consider that in 1990 the car world was more or less just starting to overcome the challenges of making a high powered engine that didn't pollute like hell, yeah 380HP was a lot. The only domestic engine I can think of off the top of my head making that NA was the LT5, which was an all aluminum 32v DOHC V8 designed by Lotus for the C4 ZR-1.

Cost $181,000 in 1989. That's about $425k today. Performed very well for the time.

That 380hp was out of 5 liters. the BMW 5 liter v12 of the era made 295hp. the 5 liter v8 in the mustang was 225hp, and chevy was making a 5 liter v8 with 170hp. Remember, 500hp factory cars absolutely did not exist in 1990. The F40 was 471hp, and was the fastest production car at the time.

But as always seems to be the case, if you don't mind a garbage interior you could get a better performing Corvette for a third of the price. $58,995 for the ZR-1. Lotus's engine was certainly more advanced at the time though, putting out the same power but at much better mpg. Someone find me a Testarossa on craigslist with an LS1/2/3 swapped.

Edit: mm and part of me wants this just for fun: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/cto/3318508718.html

Lotus designed the Head, but otherwise it was just an LT1, wasn't it? It's also worth noting, that while the ZR-1 may well have stickered for less than $60k they were routinely going for $90k+ new. They even hit six figures at one point IIRC.

True, but I still remember those pictures of that Countach that was for sale on the Government of Canada auction site (presumably a drug/tax seizure?) earlier in the year. The photos of the interior of that actually looked on par, if not worse, than most North American cars of the time. The real deal had an interior that looked like a drat kit car.
