The HK translations will live on in our memories and backup hard drives. The Discotek facebook page also says that they are hoping to release all of the the original Harlock, Casshern, Polymer, Samurai Pizza Cats (!), and Mad Bull 34 along with a host of others. While I applaud the selection, I wonder how well the translation's will be if they plan to release all of this is a short time frame. Is anyone familiar with them?

Man, they'd better release Samurai Pizza Cats with the original dub or it's worthless. Mad Bull 34 is generally regarded as one of the worst anime shows of all time. Neither have anything to do with giant robots though, so, uh.

It should be worth pointing out that the subtitles for Game Center CX were redone just for Discotek's DVD's by SA's own Zari-gani, who is part of the fansubbing effort in Games and is generally considered to be really good at it. So if anything else they probably know what they're doing.

Original Mazinger Z got licensed? For real? Isn't it just 92 episodes of monster of the week, though? I can appreciate the historical significance, but...

To go with Mazinger and Cutie Honey. There's a page on amazon for Gaiking '76. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009INAK6Y Here's hoping Shout Factory does all of the Force Five series. Guyver fucked around with this message at 04:59 on Oct 7, 2012 |

It'd be cool if the new DVDs kept the rad as hell box art that was plastered all over the originals. Kinna doubt it, though.

Discotek does excellent work and their offerings, well...after their initial ones I think I already own from back in the day, are at the top of my purchasing list once I find gainful employment again so as to get back into the R1 dvd game.

Original Mazinger didn't age very well. Or well at all. I'm probably getting this if only to show support, because I don't think I can put up with that show again.

Are there any early giant robot shows that have aged well?

Depends on your definitions of "early" and "aged well," but I'd say Gundam and Ideon.

I think for anything pre-Gundam the answer relies on how much tolerance you have for the monster of the week format (and heck Gundam itself fell into that trapping a few times).

The latter half of Zambot 3 is surprisingly good too, it helps that it is only 23 episodes long though and not 70+

Majestic Prince preview. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ywxoFz05R3g Hisashi Hirai is back in the character design saddle and it's being directed by Keitaro Motonaga (Jormungand.) Looks okay I guess. Based on a Monthy Hero manga.

And now for more absurd news. Not so sure how I feel about this one though. I have a feeling what they're talking about is basically the episodes used for Force Five and none of the ones that didn't make it there, but who knows.

Ugh, none of their work is any good from what I recall---want to think they were the ones behind the terrible Bo-bobo dvd release that didn't come anywhere close to par for a "good" R1 release.
