Oh yeah, chickens are for sure little dinos. When I saw that movie I applauded the fact that the animators obviously sat and observed the way chickens move and flock behaviour.  Have dinos ever really fallen out of popularity, though...? My fav toy when I was little was a lime green plastic Stegosaurus. Also, some guy nearby has bantam Cochins for sale on Craigslist...I have room, right?

Bantam cochins! Females? Perhaps I was working two jobs at the time and busy that way and never had time for movies and such. I do remember my niece LOVING dinosaurs my nephew not so much. She had clothing items with dinosaurs and stuff. The movie just showed a dinosaur chasing and eating something it reminds me of the chickens when they are tearing up a worm. hee hee hee

The chick that hatched out for me yesterday is a bantam silky cochin! He/she is super cute and has very fluffy legs.  Here's hoping for a girl! She belongs to a friend who asked me to hatch half a dozen cochin and sizzle eggs. This is the only one that made it thanks to early failure with my incubator but it seems to be doing really well. Should I go pick up a friend for it?

Yeah, go to the feed store and pick out a good chick buddy for the bantam. Chicks get very lonely and dejected if left by themselves. They need a friend! Perhaps find out what chicks the feed store has in stock and ask your friend which of the breeds she prefers.

We went up to a cute little hobby breeder to get the eggs and two sizzle chicks for our friend, so we'll head back there as soon as possible to get another bantam cochin or sizzle chick. Probably two

I can't find my camera's usb cord, so no new pictures update, but chickies are doing great! I finally took and left the cage downstairs so the girls can watch over them and my BiL takes the chickies out for a few minutes in the morning. I only have one hen laying atm, even though most of the hens have just finished molting, or are almost done. Dust, the head henhoe, is just molting now and poor thing looks horrible in a cute way, she's so pockey and bald

Poof is doing well, she was clearly born to be Queen of the House Chickens. We're using the bright red waterer, she can see it better and can't tip it over. Her food dish is another matter, she continuously sets her mealworms free to wander the dining room. Plus, tomatoes are yummy.

Try that Earthquake/Museum Wax, it's incredibly sticky, yet should be non-toxic to the chickens, I think. (Double check that, I have no idea really, but some are child safe.)

Yes, the porcupine quill-looking things are new feathers coming in on Bear in that pic. Very itchy and uncomfortable. I call her expression in that pic The Bear Glare. What we're going to do is get Poof a large, shallow, heavy crock-type dish and place a regular chicken feeder in it...since chickens love to scratch, she can make a mess to her heart's content and I won't be continuously sweeping up chicken chow. Poof pictures, as requested! Poof is a white crested black Polish hen. With spurs! Poof and Sugar, our other Polish hen (Sugar is a buff-laced)  Sugar had a sister, Seven, who sadly passed away about a year after we got them (she had a tumor), but here they both are:  One very rainy day Poof and Sugar were brought into the house--because of their large crests and the fact that many crested breeds have a hole in their skull, they can suffer brain damage from wet, heavy crests so keeping them dry is wise. Well, wouldn't you know, BOTH girls had to lay an egg, so we had to endure about an hour of them walking around searching for that ONE magical spot, wailing their heads off all the while. Poof chose the pile of unfolded laundry on the couch.  Sugar eventually got quiet, and when I went to search for her I found her thusly:  ...that's a bowl of Blood oranges I'd picked to make jelly out of. We just waited and retrieved the egg later. It's really hard to get pics of a Polish chicken's face.  Polish chickens are very comical and sweet. Poof being silly in the rain  Plus they love to photobomb...I was TRYING to get a pic of Rita, my black Cochin/Jersey Giant mix hen.

Raikiri, typical Cochin dreams... She looks VERY much like Skitters, my bantam Cochin/Jersey Giant/Americaunas mix hen I had a few years ago, one of my favorite birds. Crested breeds typically have a hole in their skull due to humans breeding for bigger and better crests in order to win poultry shows. This results in the skull thinning out to the extent that there is only skin covering the brain. There is a link to another article at the bottom on 'Crested Fowl-Cerebral Hernia' which goes into why the hole in the skull is dangerous for a chicken--chickens reprimand each other by pecking each other on the head, so an exposed brain on a chicken with a large crest who can't see bullies coming is a dangerous thing.  I've had several crested breed birds develop Crookneck/Limberneck due to a blow to the head (I call this condition 'Head Boink') and have treated them very successfully using Alan's Selenium/Vitamin E treatment, it's amazing.

My Polish girls were skittish when we first got them--but you have to realize that their periphereal vision is pretty severely impeded by their crest and fluffy face feathers, plus they cannot see what is above them because of their crests. So anything approaching would suddenly just be THERE, in their face, without warning. poo poo, I'd jump, too! Also Polish tend to be naturally more high-strung than Silkies, which are so low-key as to practically be unconcious. But once they got to know us and their new flockmates, they calmed down and are some of the nicest birds we have. Sweet, comical, curious and friendly. Poof decided right away that she LOVED my daughter and they would honest to God play Tag in the back yard, taking turns chasing each other. Poof also loved to roost in a fruit tree every night and watch the sunset--the only chicken I've ever had that did so. If we took her down early or the weather was cloudy and she couldn't see it she'd gripe, and once the sun set she'd come down and join the others in the coop. Poof also comes over to stand on your foot and tug at your pant leg, which in chicken means, 'Pick me up and pet me.' When we give Poof goodies, she will cluck and call us over to 'share', which clearly appears to be a form of 'thank you' from her. The Polish have also been quick to learn certain things such as a new routine (Poof going blind and coming into the house has forced her to learn all kinds of new routines), which flockmates to avoid, when pecked they run to us for protection, etc. On the 'sweet but not so smart' scale I'd rank white Leghorns as #1, at least in my experience. Also adolescent youngster chicks that haven't wised up to the ways of the world yet. Lord they can be dumb.

I would say Anconas are the dumbest. Never, ever hatching any more. Abacus and Fish are flighty as all hell, you wouldn't think they'd been hand raised. If I do have to catch them they scream their heads off and catching Fish is a pain in the neck that involves me following him around until he traps himself under a bush. Saying that because Fish has semi-officially left home and gone to live with the old people next door. I've given up on him. He comes back in the morning for food and then jumps back over the fence (no matter what we do, it's a 7ft high fence with another ft of netting on top of that, we've clipped one wing and both wings and neither has stopped him) and spends the day there. Sometimes he comes back during the day but he's currently spending the nights over there roosting on a plant pot. It's fully enclosed so he's cold but safe, but still... Doesn't help that they feed him I suppose, at least he makes their life a bit more interesting. I've offered him to them along with a chicken house but they say they're too old for animals. The old dude was in the RAF during the war so he must be well over 80. At least I know my neighbours now, each time I have to catch him the dude gets more talkative.
