I don't think I've seen Stoned Jesus posted yet. They're a really awesome stoner/psychedelic/doom band from the Ukraine. They have both of their albums up on Bandcamp. Seven Thunders Roar is definitely the album to check out, with the highlight being I'm The Mountain. They have kind of a rustic woodsy quality to their music, if that makes any sense. The cover art for the album is actually a pretty good indication of how they sound:

I know they've been posted here once or twice before because that's how I heard of them. Whenever I listen to that album I always end up with Stormy Monday stuck on a loop in my head for a couple days. Good stuff, people should check them out.

I really like the cover art and this sounds cool. Aside from Neurosis, are there any albums we're still waiting for? I need even more High on Fire/Sleep-esque monumental riffs in my life. I listened to Dopesmoker in the dark the other night, and now I am hooked. Neurosis will surely deliver a fantastic album, but not those sort of riffs :(

A Colour Haze question:
Often times in you can hear a tapping sound that usually just sounds like the guitar pick hitting a pickup. I don't know what it actually is though as sometimes it doesn't seem to fit with the guitar rhythm like I would expect. What's that sound?
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=HJhkYePujR0#t=56s

That was my other guess but it's just not a thing I've ever really heard anyone do before: Clave taps mimicking the guitar rhythm on multitple albums.

At first I thought maybe the drummer was doing it during his downtime but those things are in there when he doesn't have time for them. It's just kind of weird choice.

Just sounds like clacky pick attack. It's just the pick hitting the strings, it's accentuated due to how the riff is played, though.

Can you explain a little more? I play guitar and I'm old and I don't see how you make sounds like that by just hitting the string with a pick. A pick being held is deadened by your fingers. It seems too loud to be a pick unless the pickup is picking the sound up and it's getting amplified a great deal which I guess could be happening. I just find it odd. It makes sense for it to be the pick but I don't understand how it's happening because picks and strings don't make sounds like that in my experience.

Like I said, it can be accentuated due to how you pick the string, how you hold the pick, your EQ, the gain settings, any possible overdrive you're running. I don't think I can give you any youtube examples, but try holding a larger pick, like a fender heavy or something, hold the pick nice and loose, pick lightly, turn up the gain and turn down your volume a bit, and pick towards the neck. You notice that sometimes when the guitar player really digs in on that track the clacking stops a bit. It's all about pick dynamics.

You were totally right. Playing up on the neck with a shallow pick angle makes that sound. Guitar doesn't even need to be amplified. It seems like it depends on whether the string that is getting picked is already vibrating or not. The sound is actually the string slapping against the pick right before the pick sounds the string again. Which explains why it's not present on every note when it is happening. Thanks for explaining that.

Oh, David...
Stefan is a master of dynamics, just like the rest of CH. I think I've read that he plugs straight into his massive wall of amps, getting all his tones by adjusting the volume on his guitar or by using a volume pedal. The Guild Starfire that he uses is a big part of his sound as well.

Haggatha IV is out on Bandcamp, and it's a nasty, grimy beast. I can't believe they've kept a 17 minute track up their sleeves for this long.

Stefan isn't just a great guitarist, I think he is just a great musician in general. He (and the rest of Colour Haze) have a great sense of dynamics, composition, and ensemble playing that to be frank a lot of metal and rock bands simply don't grasp.

There's an interview with him up about the recording of the new album on The Obelisk that is a good read:

Depending on how sensitive/high your pickups are, you can make the clickety clack sound by touching/tapping your pick on the pickup while you pluck. :buddy:

I just found this out a few days ago on the Hagstrom III I got last month; the position of the middle pickup on the guitar in relation to where I normally situate my hand makes it easy to get that clickety clack sound.

I like how he talks about analog sounds better than digital, bought a bunch of stuff the internet told him was good, and had no idea how to use it or record with it. If he couldn't tell the toms were out of phase, or even the top and bottom snare mics, didn't measure the monitors distance from each other (adding more phase problems) why would he think he could hear the benefits of tape over digital? He seems surprised that they ended up spending 200k euros in recording costs.

It's pretty good live too (I was standing just to the right of the camera).

I was hoping to pick up the LP at that show, but the band had them all shipped to Europe for their tour. They came back empty handed, so now I have to wait for the next pressing. It's either that, or order one from the label in Montreal, which seems goofy given that I live in the same city the band does.

Speaking of good bands from Vancouver- I've seen Tobeatic play a few really good shows recently. Its members are veterans of numerous local heavy/crusty projects (including the multi-drummer sludge madness that is Rotting Hills, but this is some good old spacy hard rock. The tune I linked has some nice riffs once the whole band kicks in.
