Well, that video was true to the lyrical content at least. Crazy makeup work.

There have been so many excellent releases these past few months. Monolith of Inhumanity, Time, and RIITIIR stand out the most to me. I still need to dig into Vanitas, but from what I've heard so far it sounds great.

I don't know if this is even a question that can be answered, but I'm curious what the general appeal of grindcore is (if there is one, maybe just a quick sentence to describe it). Seems like it gets talked about a lot in here meaning it would be relatively more "mass appealing", but I really struggle listening to it.

edit: anyone watch Dexter? The most recent episode had a scene with some metal playing and it sounded like grindcore so maybe someone can identify it.

No the song in Dexter was some generic sounding industrial/groove metal with clean singing... definitely not grindcore.

And I think the appeal of grindcore to me is the intense and chaotic wall of sound that has many different things going on at once (and is often constantly changing).

Pig Destroyer has done it better than anyone else with their past 2 albums in my opinion.

Which Katatonia? If you're talking about Viva Emptiness and beyond, which I basically consider a distinct band, you'd probably have some luck with stuff that vaguely runs the Tool/Deftones gamut like Dredg's El Cielo, Karnivool's Sound Awake and Rishloo's Terras Fames or Feathergun.

I went to see Trivium last night in Manchester. Man, everyone flipped their poo poo when they opened with In Waves. They played a good few songs from every album apart from Ember to Inferno, from which they only played the title track. They amaze me with their stamina; I just can't play a set that long and keep up the same amount of energy throughout.

I'm so loving sore from crowdsurfing and pitting.

Wait, what the gently caress is fart metal? I'm not sure if I really want to know. Also, for the guy looking for death/doom, try a search of "Epic Doom". I recently found Solitude Aeternus that way, and they're pretty great.

It's not surprising that listening to a guy scream over blast beats while an unintelligible guitar riff repeats is not everyone's cup of tea.

What appeals to me about grindcore is that it is seems to be a concentrated version of all of the awesome qualities that exist in the genres that it pulls from like death metal, punk, noise. It's the logical answer to the question "how crazy can this poo poo get"? In many ways it's absurd and silly but it completely crushes at the same time. The short songs and short parts add for some unpredictability which kind of allow you to explore things that wouldn't really sound that great if they were expressed in other genres. Though, I find that some of the well produced grindcore stuff is not as fun to listen to as the rawer sounding recordings.

When I was young, playing in a band and learning about music we we stepped off from punk into grindcore and from there to into death metal so it kind of has always had this "holy poo poo people do this?" magical quality about it. It's just the most raw, fast, scorching, weird poo poo that doesn't need a nice sounding recording and sweep picking solos to make it rock rear end. It's like...pure...or something...man.

Think of grindcore as the most logical and extreme conclusion to hardcore. If you don't like hardcore, or get hardcore, you likely aren't going to get grindcore. Really, it is not "mass appealing" by any stretch of the imagination. Even hardcore fans, namely your fans of 80s American stuff, find the harsher more extreme stuff too much for them since essentially this is comparing power metal to bestial war metal in terms of sound.

Definitely go with Unforgivable which is my personal favorite. Pretty much perfect through and through for their crazy blend of grind/d-beat/hardcore. They came out with a more recent one called Worthless which is pretty solid as well. After listening to those I recommend working your way back through their discography. The earlier stuff is more old school hardcore but still awesome.

If you get down with them some other newer bands I would recommend are Nails, Enabler and especially Trap Them. Go forth and rage my friend

I'm not familiar with Enabler, but I can definitely vouch for Trap Them and Nails. Unsilent Death is possibly one of the roughest, ugliest albums I've ever heard - that first track hits like a sledgehammer.

Yes.
I couldn't help myself and am listening to Time right now.

There certainly is a whole lot of stuff going on here, but thankfully the production really is quite good. All the orchestration and keyboard stuff sounds crisp and distinct and it's not hard to follow or anything. And I'm just using cheap headphones, I wish I had a bigass hi-fi soundsystem to blast this through.

More importantly though: The songs are loving awesome and I'm already loving this poo poo to bits on the first listen. It's big and epic and melodic in all the right ways. All that waiting and anticipation and I'm not disappointed in the least.

Well okay fine the two songs that got me into grind:

Circle of Dead Children - "Ursa Major"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgymG_uYqN8

Discordance Axis - "A Leaden Stride to Nowhere"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dpn-Usjcq1I

And also the part in Pig Distroyer's "Junkyard God" when the lyrics come in - I first saw that performed live at the first Scion Fest and I was right up front and center and between the music and the pit erupting, I thought a bomb had just gone off. Unforgettable.

edit-- and hell, for that matter, when the drum intro to "Junkyard God" started, you couldn't even hear the music over the crowd screaming. gently caress, that energy was incredible - one of the best 20-minute sets I've ever seen.
