That's... some awful salary right there. Even the most simple tech support job gets you 9eur/h here and you get about 16eur/h for tutoring undergrads. Goddamn that sucks man.

I've never worked more than 40 hours, but it seems to vary wildly depending upon your role. Epic has a pretty balanced ratio of women to men, but it's definitely a younger crowd for the most part. I should also point out, because this might make all the difference for some people, that Epic's health insurance has no copays for any services, a $5 generic drug copay, and no deductible. Individual insurance is like $80 a month or something.

A lot of training happens in-house. Those particular positions require experience, but you should check out the rest of the listings on the site and see if anything tickles your fancy. And yes, the Madison demo is basically middle-class white people who vote for democrats and think that this fact makes them radical leftists.

I worked on the other side of Epic *nix team, supporting clients' *nix teams, so my experience should probably be taken with a grain of salt. The internal team presumably has a lot bullshit to deal with because they aren't tied to to the whims of clients. You'll be largely tasked with maintaining installations of Intersystems Cache--most of the base infrastructure of email, web, DNS, whatever is Microsoft. Cache is not widely used (~75 StackOverflow answers, less than 0.5 million Google results) and is closed-source, so no sleuthing your own answers. Its CLI doesn't follow *nix conventions at all, and the Epic code on top of it is designed to run on and only on VT220s, causing fun bugs like infinite loops if your terminal is wider than 80 characters. FWIW, if you've never worked with proper enterprise-y Unices (AIX, HP-UX, etc.), their userland tools pale in comparison to Linux, to maintain backwards compatibility with the 1980s. I was never particularly impressed by our internal *nix team. Systems seem largely set up (frequently incorrectly) and managed by hand, and they seemed starved for resources--Epic can afford to build Candyland and a fake river, but has to shuffle database installations between servers because only one server is capable of supporting more than 3 simultaneous users (not in general, this was a specific subgroup of servers, but it was still ridiculous). Demographics in *nix land skewed heavily male (something like 30:1 in my department) though not so much 20-something.
