I was at a Steve Vai concert and he saw someone wearing a Devin Townsend t-shirt and called it out in an approving way. If one of the greatest guitarists in the world knows and likes it, it can't be that bad, right?

Maybe he just really likes Devin because they know each other. Also Devin is a cool as hell dude even if I'm not the biggest fan of his music.

Devin Townsend seriously missed his calling as a big-time pop music producer. He could've been the next Max Martin or Dr. Luke. He has a great ear for radio-friendly hooks but unfortunately his aesthetic sense is stuck in early 90s alt metal.

I really think that he'll eventually go into production full time and based on his career, could probably do great work for a wide range of artists.

Goddamnit I really can't stop listening to Varg. Never listened to them before the Wintersun tour was announced, checked them out to see what they're like, and I'm pretty hooked. One question though: what the hell is up with all the dislikes for this video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iiAtLFkVps I mean it certainly isn't their best song (doesn't "Guten Tag" mean "good day"?) but

The lyrics are pretty stupid. Also the lead singer once wore an Absurd bandshirt. Now they are constantly atttacked for being Nazis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absurd_%28band%29 Wikipedia posted:The band achieved infamy because its (original) members (now no longer in the band since 1999) murdered the 15-year-old Sandro Beyer in 1993. The canonical motive is that Beyer was privy to an illicit relationship of Schauseil's with a married woman, and had been spreading rumours about this and other activities of the band.[5] On 29 April in Sondershausen, Möbus, Schauseil, and Kirchner enticed Beyer to a meeting, and strangled him there with an electrical cord. Kirchner, in a now infamous quotation, was reported as saying: “Oh poo poo—now I’ve completely ruined my life.”[6] Schauseil claimed to have heard a voice in his head saying “Kuster Maier”, which made no sense but was interpreted by him as “töte Beyer” (‘kill Beyer’).[7] I dont know much more. When there were in Calgary during the summer I was kinda disappointed with the length of their set, and they literally did not take breaks between songs. The singer is a cool dude though and always hangs around to chat after a show so I guess I cant complain.

So, Kamelot has a full new song out, Sacrimony (Angel of Afterlife) that they already put a snippet of out earlier: http://youtu.be/ORAc_hx33-Q Sounds pretty good to me, apart from the bleep-bloop keyboard solo. That chorus is all kinds of catchy as gently caress. Karevik sounds great, but uh, perhaps they're going a bit overboard with the Khan-mimicry? I'm not really complaining, it's just a bit funny.

This isn't really the thread for it, but Anathema's Weather Systems has really grown on me since its release. I've probably listened to the whole thing about 30 times now, it's brilliant. We're Here Because We're Here is cool but not quite what I wanted to hear after binging Weather Systems. Is there anything else out there in the rock world that is similar? Also, if for some strange reason you're still into folk metal, Dalriada still makes good music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sy8ebQWHDnE velvet milkman fucked around with this message at 06:10 on Oct 23, 2012 |

Like Misogynist says, God Is An Astronaut is a good place to start. They are quite fond of the whole "build up to crescendo" model that Anathema are doing lately. Mono do it too, especially on their last album, Hymn To The Immortal Wind.
