Keller Williams's solo act is jammy and at times spacey, but whenever he teams up with other musicians and goes into band mode, usually things take on a grassier, more americana-esque feel. I'm partial to the trio act Keller & The Keels. Larry Keel is amazing on an acoustic. I'm so glad this thread exists. I still listen to The Deep Dark Woods and JTE a lot when I'm in my car and I'm loving the music posted here. I also quite enjoyed the album Tones by Small Sur. I bought it on Amazon on a whim because it was 5 dollars. It's pretty downtempo and I don't even know if it could be classified as country, perhaps melodic folk (same vein as City and Colour)? Only perhaps with an emphasis on nature and tranquility over heartbreak. Edit: drat, I love this. Thanks! If you haven't already picked it up, Living For A Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran is pretty good. It scratches the run-down jukebox in a dive bar itch like no album I've listened to in a long time. Plus it has an amazing lineup: Alison Krauss, Merle Haggard, Emmylou Harris, Elvis Costello, George Strait, Willie Nelson, and some others. If you want a solid CD of songs about lost love and hard drinkin' you could do a lot worse. Here's the Alison Krauss song on Letterman I love you Alison Krauss. Even though your last CD was kind of crummy.

What's everyone's opinion on the newest Lucero album? I don't dislike it, but after a couple listens there no tracks that really grab me yet. A couple more listens might turn one up, but as of right now I like it more than there first two albums but not as much as any of their others.

I'm going to the Tallest Man on Earth gig tomorrow. I dig his records, and he seems the kind of guy who would be great live, so I have high expectations. Doubt he'll match William Elliott Whitmore, though - I saw him a few months ago in London - Old Devils in particular blew the loving roof off the venue. He was the warm-up act to The Low Anthem along with Simon Felice, but nobody could come close: Low Anthem were beautiful, but not really trancedent, and I couldn't get into Simon's set at all, even though I like Felice Brothers (here's their Penn Station). Next month it's Lucinda Williams. What do you guys think of her latest record? I have played it a few times, but it's probably my least favourite of hers - quiet introspection seems to be the default setting here, and I don't think she does it as well as, well, anything else.

Some stuff I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned yet. Before Uncle Tupelo there were the Jayhawks. He's got a live album called Courier, the version he does on that will rip your heart out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l12rlGGjxBM He was also in a folk supergroup called Cry Cry Cry along with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky, they do a cover of James Keelaghan's "Cold Missouri Waters," about the Mann Gulch fire, and I honestly believe it's the saddest song ever, I can't even perform because every time I get to the part about "And when I arose like the Phoenix/in that world reduced to ashes there were none but two survived/I stayed that night and day after/carried bodies to the river, wondering how I stayed alive," I just loving lose it. Every goddamned time. He also does a wonderful cover of what might be the purest country & western song ever, "Sonora's Death Row." I say the purest because after shooting one of his friends down in a mezcal-fueled hallucination and being sentenced to hang, he's sitting there in prison not thinking "Wow, maybe I shouldn't have drank that much mezcal," his thought is "I really wish I were back in that bar drinking mezcal with those guys." He IS pretty popular, but he certainly wasn't billed above Parliament/Funkadelic, and I think he's much more suited to the Golden Plains crowd compared to Jon Spencer. Anyways, to the other guy going to see him, I saw tallest man on earth in Melbourne earlier in the year, and it was mostly good, but he has an odd stage persona, and will range from no eye contact and standing still, to basically staring down any person who cheers too loudly, I swear sometimes while he was up there he just looked really pissed off to be playing his songs to people. This was probably exacerbated more by him telling us these really long explanations to songs where he basically says he regrets writing it because it's so hateful to someone he loves, only to start playing and have a whole bunch of people start cheering. Also, be prepared for a duo with his wife where they basically make out with each other while he plays the guitar. Everyone loved it for some reason but it was just really awkward. This makes it sound pretty bad, but his performances were perfect and most of the time he was normal, I guess it just depends on the crowd

Just saw this guy live last Thursday at the Tin Angel in Philly. Nice place to see a show, really tiny and intimate. Horrible, awful, lovely loving crowd. You had the people who could not sit still and had to keep getting up to go to the bathroom (which in this place requires walking all the way up front and then in front of and around the stage), or out for a cigarette, or to get another beer. Yeesh. In a big concert that's no loving problem but this place is a closet. Then you had all the loving talkers. Seriously, people were shutting up in between the songs and then talking in louder-than-normal voices so they could hear each other over the loving music. I was pissed as poo poo. Then as we were leaving an announcement went on the PA: seems the opening artist had some merchandise taken from her merchandise table with nobody paying for it. What a bunch of loving asshats. Anyway, John Fullbright, he's apparently up for a Grammy and is a pretty decent fingerpicker. He also does a really good Willie Nelson impression. I've been on a George Jones and Hank Williams Sr. binge for the longest time. It is my favorite music to just turn on really loud and just sit there and soak in the original country-western legends. To think that Hank Jr. came from the same nut sack of Hank Sr. is just absurd. I guess the talent skips a generation when Hank III came around. The gospel music George Jones put out is just some of the best stuff he does. We've seriously gone through two pages and no one's mentioned the Band? The first three albums are some of the best music ever recorded. Also three of the most passionate singers I've ever heard. Four Canadians and one Arkansan playing soul-inflected Appalachian music. Can't go wrong (until Robbie Robertson became a douche and hosed over his bandmates). Seconding Ryan Adams. Also, Steve Earle is brilliant and puts on a hell of a live show.

I'm a huge fan of The Band and a lot of the other groups previously named. So I'm glad I found this thread and a few new groups to listen to. I'm surprised nobody's mentioned some of the older folk troubadours. Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger were hugely influential on later singers and songwriters. Simple melodies, but some of their original lyrics were subversive as hell. Incidentally, Rounder Records released a Woody Guthrie tribute album, New Multitudes, earlier this year that involves some more modern folk groups. Jay Farrar, Will Johnson, Anders Parker, and Yim Yames collaborate to put old unused lyrics to new music (a lot like the Mermaid Avenue records from Wilco and Billy Bragg). Despite loving blues and some old outlaw country stuff I never really got the whole "alt country/country rock" thing. I recently started a new job somewhere and my boss got me into Drive By Truckers by giving me a few albums (Southern Rock Opera and Dirty South). This is now my new favorite band. I love how they are basically a mix of classic outlaw country with a southern rock flair and the downtuned guitars add a real grittiness to the twang. I could listen to Mike Cooley play that rickety rear end guitar all day. I haven't been this into a band in forever.
