Whatever it is, I'm pretty sure Mike Uyama suffers from it too. Without fail, every time he gets a new personal best on Sub-Terrania, the first words out of his mouth, after the insane laughter subsides, is "I think sub-[minutes digit of new best time] is possible."

Yeah man it's baffling how much punishment they're asking for. I guess it's cool that they keep wanting to push the game and their skill to the limit but geez man take a day or two as a break or something.

I have a Q for the speedrunners here, what kinda net speed you guys rocking, I ask because I'd like to stream myself and attempt to learn and run Nightshade but I'm not sure if my net could handle streaming.

My internet speed is mediocre to average: and streaming in 720p when I have skype going has never been an issue.

You can get by with a pretty low bitrate for older games. 1 Mb/s upload is the desired minimum for more modern games, but you could probably stream with as low as 400Kb/s upload for an older game. You can also use different video encoding presets on streaming software to sort of substitute upload speed for cpu speed. Going with the "slow" rather than "veryfast" setting for video encoding on XSplit would increase the cpu usage but make better use of the bitrate.

It also depends on what twitch server you get allocated to or manually choose. A good ping to it matters.

Does streaming eat up any CPU?

My four year old laptop could handle streaming an old NES game at about 500-600 kbps with few issues, but you'll want something more modern if you plan on pushing it higher.

If you have something atrociously old, try to track down a copy of FME 2.5, I was even able to stream off a netbook (with 1 gig of ram) using that thing.

Tons, encoding h.264 video is really intensive. This is why the proliferation of quad-core CPUs has made streaming a lot more widespread. Of course if you have a hardware encoder card or whatever (for streaming from a console) it offloads a lot of that

I don't think this would help xsplit at all, since it would need to re-encode it into something suitable for flash streaming anyway.

People looking into streaming, xsplit might be nice but it comes with a price. I do recommend using ffsplit if you are just starting out. Pretty easy to configure and seems to do everything I need. The overlay could be better, but it is beta and being worked on.

Probably the easiest free alternative to use.

I realize that, but I don't know if xsplit is capable of reading that sort of thing directly from a card like that. I've never bothered, but if somebody has actually done this and isn't just speculating that'd be good to know.

This is definitely a good program. Overlay's a little cumbersome and I do have to play around with the video bitrate more, plus sometimes the sound randomly doesn't work, but I hated messing with FME and I don't want to pay for a program I'll probably seldom use.
