I like it a lot but it's definitely a bit of a let down coming off The Monitor (and I also don't think it's as good as The Airing of Grievances, although it's a bit closer to that in sound). The Monitor was a really messy, strange, and ultimately brilliant album. It was totally different sounding and seemed downright epic. Local Business is a relatively straight forward and polished uplifting rock album. That's totally fine, and they're really good at that, it's just not exactly what I was hoping for from a new Titus Andronicus album. Still really excited to see them play live in three weeks though (a day after I see Japandroids, gonna OD on rock that week). I haven't had a chance to listen yet but that's sad to hear that they departed a bit from The Monitor. I really love that album, if not just for the amazing sound, I loved all the themes that they played with and the overall aesthetic of the record. Lyrically it's just as great as it is musically. But anyway, I'm being devoured by jealousy to hear that you're seeing them and Japandroids within 24 hours of each other; that's an awesome combo of rock 'n' roll goodness.

Or maybe I just think that because I came to them later. I still love them, but their lyrics don't feel as personal as Titus (then again, few things do, since Stickles is so naked). I'm still debating seeing Japandroids at Laneway, but I feel like I NEED to see them.

I agree with what you said about their lyrics: it's not as personal and they aren't as much a part of the Sprinsteen/heartland rock thing but I think that's just not what Japandroids are going for with their music. Titus and Gaslight are very much a part of New Jersey Americana uprising scene. I think Japandroids is more about just fun, unadulterated, noisey rock 'n' roll goodness and less about musical themes and the like. I don't know if that's accurate, but that's the vibe I get from them. I still definitely recommend seeing them.

Also, I noticed that my friend's facebook profile picture is the scene from the Japandroids' music video for "The House That Heaven Built" where the kid in the Free Energy t-shirt gets thrown off the stage. I couldn't figure out why this was his default though. Turns out that it's him. I'm incredibly jealous.

I strongly suggest Women's Public Strain and Soft Moon's 2010 debut. Soft Moon sounds like Joy Division, Killing Joke, and PIL flirted with Can's Tago Mago (track picks: Circles; We Are We). Public Strain is like Psychocandy, but instead of fuzz they chose dissonance; it's a bunch of disorganized schizophrenics covering pre-Rubber-Soul Beatles (track picks: China Steps; Eyesore; Narrow With The Hall). both = Starbucks-tested, NPR-approved hipster cred, lemme know what you all think.

Personally, I absolutely loved them live; Alice has a ton of energy and gets the crowd insanely pumped. If you like sweaty mob dancing, you'll love Crystal Castles live. As for the new album, the first half is really strong - some of the best stuff they have done in my opinion. "Sad Eyes" especially blew me away. The second half of the album is kind of lackluster, though I've only listened through it once so far.

The new Crystal Castles album is really drat good. Not a single bad track, favorites are Kerosene, Sad Eyes, Insulin and god drat Child I Will Hurt You is the best mellow song they've done. Grab tickets for their shows asap, they tend to sell out quite fast. They are really good live, I've seen them two times. First time was back in 2010, Alice had broken her ankle but still put on one hell of a show. 2nd time was back in July at a festival here in Sweden, she stagedived on top of me twice  and poured Jack Daniels all over my face. I've got tickets for a show in March, can't wait to see Sad Eyes live!

Yay new Grimes avatar. If anyone else wants a Grimes av I have a bunch more I made. Yes I'm a weirdo. The new Crystal Castles is really good but I hate when the best songs are right upfront. Plague and Kerosene are amazing and get my expectations way up. Then the rest, while still really good, isn't as good and I end up being a little underwhelmed.

Conduit for Sale!'s name made me realize that a band called Conduits warrants a post. They're a bit of a supergroup in the Omaha/Lincoln/Saddle Creek scene — members from a few now-defunct, well-known bands in these parts. They put out a s/t album this year that I think is a pretty good listen. Female-fronted, kinda drone-y, kinda post-rock, kin-- ah gently caress it, just check them out.
