ASK ME HOW I HAVE CRYING MELTDOWNS ABOUT BEING A GAY FURRY. PS, I'M 16 YEARS OLD
Every week or so I go through the new artists page on bandcamp and pick through the stuff that looks interesting and if I find anything good, I download it. I recently just came across Aerial Jungle in my iTunes and while I only knew them for their free bandcamp release Mosaic, apparently they released a full album on No Kings Records (owned by previously mentioned Lee Noble). It's good stuff.

Gonna bump this thread with tracks I've been enjoying lately.

Stars of the Lid - Meaningful Moment (reminds me a lot of Helios's quieter things)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PE50PZG5aw

Acid Burp - 39 Hour Man (Probably closer to IDM than anything very ambient; Like a mix of Flim by Aphex Twin and Lemon Jelly)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCUhzVWMM7M

ATB - Talismanic (Perfect chillout tune to play when driving home from work/school on a rainy day)

Old Town Road to EGOT

Yeah! ATB's last few albums have been 2-disc with the first being trance and the second being ambient/chillout type stuff. I dig the trance stuff on the first discs, but the second discs are usually even better. Whenever I tell people about this and recommend that they listen to it, I usually get a response of either "Who's ATB?" or "ATB's just lovely trance" and I don't think anyone I know has actually gotten into it :( Glad to know someone else appreciates that stuff though!

April's Fool.
Been listening to CFCF's stuff recently. The album Exercises... very simple and chill. He has other slightly more upbeat, but the piano on this album is very elegantly placed over top droning synth lines.

As a casual lurker in this thread and in ambient music in general, I have noticed Basinski before, but have been a bit intimidated by the length of some of his works. I've been trying to give him a real listen, but am afraid that if I listen to one 60 minute piece and decide that I do not like it that I would be unwilling to listen to another piece of similar length to discover that I could possibly dislike that too. Can you recommend any particular pieces of his to me?

For example, would Disintegration Loops be a good place for me to start, or is there a better place?

I personally would argue that if you don't enjoy that, you won't enjoy anything else, because it's easily the best thing he's done. But that's just one subjective opinion.

I don't feel like you should be obligated to listen to the whole thing straight through though. Skip around a bit if you want. Art doesn't have rules.

I haven't actually listened to any of his work yet, just did some reading on him before I did, so I'm not sure what I will think yet. Well, I say I haven't, but I am right this moment, as in just started. I like it so far in that it feels like I am stood in a particularly old, empty hall, waiting in anxiety for some sort of judgement. Is his work all on this same scale of terrifying?

Also, I have noticed that quality listening devices have a serious impact on how he sounds. The cheap rear end cans I usually use for comfort were really dirtying his sound, I had to make sure it wasn't actually that muddy sounding with my better earphones. Massive difference, much... not cleaner, maybe more intentional.

Nah, not at all. Some of his stuff is quite pretty, or just soothing. I'm really fond of 92982 for that (though it also has some unsettling sections, they're not on the level of DL).

I think my favorite William Basinski piece aside from The Disintegration Loops is A Red Score in Tile : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A7AZeTjVrg.

I personally find it to be really depressing and melancholic.

Word, although I find Melancholia, 92982 and El Camino Real just as enjoyable as DL. They're certainly not as immense, though.

I haven't listened to Ambient in a while, but nevertheless this sounds great. Great find. :)

Sounds like it belongs here to me. I like how it occasionally gets creepy with the whisper-esque sounds, and doesn't just drone on.

I'll drop my favorite ambient track here: Oval - "Do While" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvW6qiTkZdw

It reminds me of a save-zone track from a survival-horror videogame; sounds of safety and serenity in the eye of a storm. I also second all the Basinski and Hecker fans.

That's a really gorgeous track, thanks for the share. I haven't heard much of Oval's music.

Brian Eno's new album Lux came out today and I've been listening to it this morning. It's quite enjoyable, reminds me of Ambient 2 with Harold Budd.

Yeah, it's great. He sounds like he's gone back to his old style of truly ambient music, rather than his more recent, merely instrumental-but-not-quiet stuff (which is still pretty awesome).
I'd also compare Lux to Thursday Afternoon.

I'm not sure what differentiates ambient from minimal techno or where exactly these lie but here are some obscure Japanese artists I like:

gray - Charon

kanabun - Starry sky

Please correct me if there is a more specific genre for things like these (or if I've completely miscategorized them).

This is a good effort but I think it would probably be a great one if you remixed it and completely remove the repeated guitar chord. It gets irritating really fast to me, and it's hard to say why but definitely I don't like the tone of it and it just gives the track that kind of intentionally unpleasant quality that is sometimes pretty awesome but here just distracting.

Sad day today. :( He was a major gateway into ambient music for me. The Air series, his collaborations with Tetsu Inoue (hence my screen name), Richie Hawtin (Fires of Ork), Bill Laswell (Psychonavigation) and my recent favorite Lorenzo Montana (Labyrinth)...So much great music to remember him by. His label (Fax +49/69 450464) is unique and legendary and I hope, somehow, continues in his absence.

He wrote this in the main FAX discussion thread on Discogs some time ago:

quote:

FAX is me personally (it is no company... just a label name)... so FAX will go "bankrupt" when I die if my daughter and son mess things up. Otherwise there will be reissues and releases that have not been released before (I like the Hitchcock legacy style.. this was a smart move of him to hold back great films to be released after his death ;-))

I only just found out because I had sent him an email a few weeks ago and hadn't heard anything back, so I casually checked Discogs to see if he was moving or busy with a late harvest in his garden or some poo poo like that.

Goddamn man. It was the only music I still bought on CD because I could buy it directly from the man himself.

Owning all the released CDs, his music has been a huge part of my life for the last 20 years and I'm extremely sad about this news :(

Again in the vein of dissonant, drone-y wall of sound kind of stuff, a friend and I had a neat jam session thing that I recorded for reference later. Some of you might dig it, though the audio is a little bit blown out.

It's little different than their 1st party releases, but that's what you come to expect from remixes anyway. I like it nevertheless.

Other than that, this thread has proven to be especially useful during finals. There's nothing else I can listen to other than ambient while writing course-works and exams while not getting distracted by music/lyrics.

I have not kept on my promise to update OP with every single link that has been posted in this thread (it has had way more response than I originally anticipated) and I'm sorry for that. It makes me happy to see so many of my favorite ambient artists already listed in this thread. I'm a huge fan of Eno, Aphex, Tycho, Helios/Goldmund, Seefeel, etc. Such great music :unsmith:

I was hoping that you all might be able to give me suggestions on where to find music like what I've made. Please forgive me for posting something of my own and don't think I'm trying to pimp my work, I honestly just have a hard time finding stuff like it. They're very long which is part of the issue, but I like having a slow background noise most of the day. Great for walking, taking the bus/subway, doing your daily chores, that sort of thing. I am probably in the minority of liking songs as slow as these, but I find them to be profoundly relaxing, and they help me when I feel blue.

Those two are, to me, probably the most beautiful and some of my most favored. I'm not sure they really fit but I can't see any other genre.
