What are the specific differences between "Detroit" House, "Chicago" House, and "New York" House?

I apparently love all 3 genres, but it's hard to distinguish how they vary (if they even do).

This is probably going to get a number of different interpretations, but I've always thought of it like this:

- Detroit house - more like techno/more machinelike
- Chicago house - more gospel sounding (though not in theme, you'll have vocalists who have a v gospel feel to them)
- New York house - more latin feeling, esp if you listen to like Masters at Work stuff

I'm down with the other 2, but I dont know what you mean by this.

This to me is pure chicago - little bit of a disco influence, very upbeat & snappy/jacking.

I think he means the same aspect of the gospel tradition that you can hear in blues, soul, and R&B vocals. The first tune that came to mind for me was Cajmere ft. Dajae - Brighter Days: http://youtu.be/YVfZzIoAjK8. Not all Chicago house has that sound but I'm having a hard time coming up with a better description off the top of my head.

Chicago House to me embodies Funk, Soul, and Disco sampled records. Just funky is the simplest way of putting it. Sassy, soulful vocals from time to time, with a heavy helping of grooving funky bass, Chicago.

A lot of the early chicago house vocalists came from a gospel background, so I think the gospel comparison is fair, but that would be only one strand of the many Chicago house sounds. I also feel that sorta vocal style is represented well in the new jersey garage stuff and various other places.

I would also agree that derek carter is a quintessential chicago dj, but the mid 90s chicago sound is a bit different from the 80s days of Marshall Jefferson, Larry Heard, Mike Dunn, Jamie Principle etc.

I think the best way to get a feel for the distinctions is to listen to the works of a few of the bigger names from the various cities and some contemporary mixes to see what kinda songs and dj styles were tossing around rather than trying to fit a rigid category scheme as there is a lot of interplay between the various scenes. For example, loose joints - all over your face is one of the biggest chicago songs of all time amongst chicago house djs, but it was from Arthur Russell a prominent ny scenster. Or, take someone like DJ Pierre. He helped pioneer the acid sound in chicago, but then moved to New York and started the legendary wild pitch parties. Did his house become New York house when he moved? Something like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vkURbwQ7fjE could very well be associated with the Sound Factory or runways or parties like wild pitch, that someone in New York would identify with closely, but surely it owes a lot to his past in Chicago as well (and I presume it got plenty of play there as well.) Or, take the Detroit house classic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFo9a2-FnM4 morning factory. As the name suggests, it was designed for play in the Sound Factory in New York. I think most people upon listening to this would hear Ron Trent and Chez Damier's touch, but it's detroit house made with new york in mind.

They have, this was easily the worst or second worst (08) Haunted Mansion lineup and the sale to Live Nation looks to be having serious repercussions in the lineup quality.

The main stage was all people that had played a Hard show before:

I stayed in the Discoteque for pretty much the whole night. That lineup was pretty quality if you ask me:

I mean sure if you hung out at the stage dedicated to moombahton or "Knife Party Presents Earstorm" stage, you're not going to be hearing much house, but even those stages had artists that have preformed with Hard before. Trap and Moombah are still relatively new sounds (at least on the edm scene) and Hard does tend to try to promote "new" popular things (most notably bringing the genius that is DJ MOMJEANS to the stage).

This video is pretty cool if you pretend it's about the same "dance epidemic" seen in the videos for Party Rock Anthem and Levels. It becomes a bit less cool when you realize it's just an excuse to show sexy young women being hyper-sexual, just like every other Ultra or Ministry of Sound music video. The song also sounds just like all the other pop-pseudo-house-neo-mctrance that's popular now. I admit, though, that just like the person with the top comment on Youtube, the "girl in pink shorts is burned into my brain." So kudos to you, boringly titillating music video. Your bog-standard wiles have worked on me.

but seriously what's with all the music vids with the theme of "dance epidemic"?

Sometimes, there's a man, well, he's the man for his time and place. He fits right in there. And that's Jimmy T.
So I just purchased tickets to Snowglobe for NYE and I am super excited. The lineup this year looks incredible. I am definitely planning on seeing deadmau5 (have never seen him live), Chromeo, Big Gigantic, Madeon, Chris Lake, Zion I, and Boombox but I was hoping for some additional suggestions since I will be there all 3 days. Below is a link to the full lineup.

Also, for you electro fans, you should definitely check out Shreddie Mercury. If you enjoy Mord Fustang, you would most likely enjoy his tasty synths. My favorite tracks of his are Mount Cleverest, Heartbeat (Remix), and Night by Night (Remix) but everything is quality.

DAM-FUNK! If you like Chromeo, go see Dam-Funk. His music is even more of an 80's funk tribute than Chromeo's is. And then go see deadmau5 right after for extreme racial juxtaposition.

Not deep into the electronic scene to tell ya but I've really enjoyed their music. I know the first album had issues with them ripping off samples and melodies, but I was never aware of any issues in their second album.

All the same, it reminds me of the second album in tone but more subdued. Alice is more of a part of the music. I really enjoy the tracks Insulin and Kerosene.
