Here's the sad truth about SA-Mart. We have several guys who just buy games only to resell them on ebay. It wouldn't be so bad if it was just one, but we do have several. Not gonna name names here, but if I ever sell off any of my stuff, everyone here gets notification first (and in the IRC chat).

triplexpac posted:So since vintage game stores are generally way overpriced, where do you guys buy your games? ebay? A few years ago when I was in the collecting phase where the thrill of the hunt was part of the fun, Craigslist, flea markets, and bulk purchases off eBay and other places online were great. Another huge contributor is friends and work. People like to get rid of stuff all the time, and if you're known as a retro-gamer in enough social circles, you might find a pile of NES games or something on your desk when you show up to work. Also keep up with forums, like the NEO-GEO forums. People on forums are often getting rid of stuff to make space, so they'll sell it for less if they know it's going to someone who will use it. If you know people who travel you're in extra luck, knowing people taking a trip to Japan can get you fantastic deals on some of the mid-range import games. I'm now at the point where I go for more quality than quantity. Space is a bigger concern than money (largely because I'm more patient), and I have most of the good "collection filler" games on most systems. I've also been in a downsizing phase the last couple years: Got rid of my Atari 5200 and Turbo Grafx a few years ago. So retro game shops, eBay, Amazon, and other places known for being a little overpriced is not as big a concern for me, if I have to I'll wait an extra paycheck or three for some more money from my games fund to get the next game on my wishlist. I am still using Craigslist, forums, and friends for stuff, but I'm more discerning, I don't take everything.

There were rumors about it hitting the U.S. in early 1996 (possibly even under the title "Genesis"), but nothing came of that, of course. I was under the impression that it was going to be released in NA. I don't know why it didn't happen...except for games like Illusion of Gaia and even more infamously Earthbound tanking massively. They so badly underperformed, I guess NOA got gun shy about bringing over RPGs, even of the action RPG variety. Given how those turned out, it seems kind of miraculous NOA even rolled the dice on localizing Pokemon originally. tvb posted:Here's a retro swag question: Anyone have a copy of this? I've never seen it (was in Japan at the time). But I am a fan of Charlie Nozawa (though he goes by the pen name Tamakichi Sakura). He's published 24 separate books through proper publishers (not including reprints/reformats). Nozawa/Sakura drew manga for years with Famitsu until his bi-polar disorder made it impossible to keep up with a weekly publishing schedule. He moved to Comic Beam (also published by Enterbrain) where he sank deeper into his mental illness. He hasn't published in at least five years. Takekuma used to (maybe still does) write storylines for managa. I think he most famously teamed up with Koji Aihara on the "Saruman" series. Lesley is still with NOA and heads the localization section.

triplexpac posted:So since vintage game stores are generally way overpriced, where do you guys buy your games? ebay? I get my stuff from a variety of places... first and foremost, I check SA-Mart since you usually get a price that benefits both the buyer and seller by avoiding Ebay fees. Second to that, I like Craigslist: I tend to buy lots off of CL because I can get better prices, keep what I need, and sell (or give) my extras to goons who would otherwise not have access to them at good prices. Sold a bunch of TG16 games on SA-M this year to make up for some other things I got with them. Third, Pawn Shops: A lot of pawn shops don't even bother with retro stuff anymore, but I do pick up some stuff for cheap to use for trade fodder at a local retro shop (see below.) Fourth, I hit up Ebay: I always have a pretty long watchlist running. A lot of people will probably tell you to just look at BiN stuff, but my tastes tend to be more obscure and I've found it quite easy to pick up things I want for cheap (i.e. Resident Evil 3 on Dreamcast for $10 shipped) by waiting on auctions that seem to have little-to-no traffic. Also, use gixen.com to snipe things that you expect to be contentious. Fifth, Amazon/Half.com: occasionally you can find deals on things here. I got a brand new copy of Deep Fighter for $4 shipped on Amazon recently and last year a bunch of us took advantage of a Half.com free shipping deal. Sixth, Mom 'n' Pop game stores: I have a halfway decent store local to me that has a few downsides (i.e. a terrible Dreamcast selection) but a huge upside: they give much more for sealed games as trade in fodder because they resell them (rightly so) as new. Since I have a tendency to buy crap from the Kmart (R.I.P.) and Sears bargain bins for $5 and under and leave it sealed on my shelf, I've started trading this stuff in and making $5~10 profits in store credit since they'll turn around and sell the things for $20~25. While the store doesn't have much I'm actually interested in, having credit on hand helped me fill in some gaps in goons Namco Museum collections earlier this year. [edit] But if you want one piece of advice, it should be not to be afraid to buy in bulk. Just keep what you want, and sell off the rest to keep you from the dog and/or poorhouse. [edit2] Which reminds me... I still have some TG16 games that I'm about to dump on Ebay. If anyone's interested, hit me up and I'll get you a list. testtubebaby fucked around with this message at 21:44 on Nov 6, 2012 |

From the folks I talked to in the past I get the idea that NOA localized Pokemon chiefly because Yamauchi made them do it. Nobody in the industry really liked the game, I feel like, until it became popular. Famitsu very famously gave the original Pokemon 8/7/7/7 out of 10, which if you know Famitsu review standards is basically the equivalent of "I played it for half and hour and it's ok I guess". Maybe you can parallel that with Skylanders today, I dunno. I noticed at the local Best Buy that Skylanders crap now occupies all the shelf space anime used to

I find independent stores to be the best bet for retro stuff. Make friends with the owners and never pay full price again. The thrift shops around here are scavenged by resellers on an hourly basis so I don't even bother. Same deal with craigslist. We have some chain retro stores that have insane prices and aren't worth checking. Pawns base their prices off of ebay or even worse amazon. Then there are the retro conventions. If there's one nearby go to it.
