Israel is the only democracy in the middle east.* Turkey not included. I support Israels right to exist. X2 Iran was funding HAMAS. Iran is funding Hezbollah. Someone can claim bingo. Also: Link.

Here we are in the middle east. You can win the war and lose the peace.

Deceitful Penguin posted:Here's a picture of the muslim ethnic group she's ignoring as they slowly die of starvation, disease and poverty and quickly when buddhist extremists try to kill them. They're ethnic Nepalis--mostly Hindu but with plenty of Buddhists, animists, and a few Muslims--who weren't bothering anyone until the government decided they were a threat to "real" Bhutanese and expelled over 100,000 people to Nepal and India. When I was teaching English in Calcutta, the school I was at arranged to have a couple of girls from one of the refugee camps come to the school to learn some marketable skills so they could make some money back at the camps. They were in one of my classes, and they were really smart and kind folks, with nothing but smiles and gratitude for the opportunity they'd been given. One of them turned out to have tuberculosis so they sent all of them back to the camp rather than quarantine/treat them locally.

Is that defending bombing hospitals? Really? One of my former roommates goes to the University of Texas at Austin, and she posted this photo the other day: With the caption, "Come support Israel's right to defend itself with student orgs on the west mall! #israel #pillarofdefense #istandwithisrael." She's also posted some other shared stuff with captions along the lines of, "WE want peace, THEY want us dead." It really sucks.

20th November is Transgender Day of Remembrance. Over the past twelve months, at least 265 trans people, almost all of them trans women of colour, have been murdered in hate crimes. The above person, Cece McDonald, is thankfully not one of them. While across the country people were arguing about Trayvon Martin, Cece McDonald received 41 months in a Minnesota men's prison for involuntary manslaughter. Her only crime was to defend herself from attack while being trans and black. Had she not pled guilty to the lesser charge, she was facing 25 years in jail for murder.

Rachel Maddow was very helpful getting the word out about Michigan's emergency manager law and what the Republicans are trying to do in the state. Some of the folks who helped with the petition drive and getting out the word to vote no on Proposal 1 that ended the emergency manager law (for now) had a party and came up with a new drink called the "Emergency Manager." Rachel and crew made the drink and tried it out. http://vimeo.com/53891214 And a picture:

Hamas' strategy seems to be working! (i.e. they've inflicted far fewer civilian casualties than Israel) Here's a graph I made back in 2006: Data came from the Israeli government website, http://www.mfa.gov.il/mfa/go.asp?MFAH0i5d0 - it shows that Arafat was an effective "partner for peace".

ljw1004 posted:Hamas' strategy seems to be working! (i.e. they've inflicted far fewer civilian casualties than Israel) I--and others, I expect--would be really interested to see you continue this to the most recent data, and also include Palestinian civilian deaths from Israeli airstrikes. I know we'll all suspect that Sharon, Olmert, and Netanyahu have not been 'effective partners for peace' but I always like to see data. Daniel Inouye, senior Senator from Hawaii, WWII veteran, and Medal of Honor recipient. quote:Second Lieutenant Daniel K. Inouye distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism in action on 21 April 1945, in the vicinity of San Terenzo, Italy. While attacking a defended ridge guarding an important road junction, Second Lieutenant Inouye skillfully directed his platoon through a hail of automatic weapon and small arms fire, in a swift enveloping movement that resulted in the capture of an artillery and mortar post and brought his men to within 40 yards of the hostile force. Emplaced in bunkers and rock formations, the enemy halted the advance with crossfire from three machine guns. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Second Lieutenant Inouye crawled up the treacherous slope to within five yards of the nearest machine gun and hurled two grenades, destroying the emplacement. Before the enemy could retaliate, he stood up and neutralized a second machine gun nest. Although wounded by a sniper’s bullet, he continued to engage other hostile positions at close range until an exploding grenade shattered his right arm. Despite the intense pain, he refused evacuation and continued to direct his platoon until enemy resistance was broken and his men were again deployed in defensive positions. In the attack, 25 enemy soldiers were killed and eight others captured. By his gallant, aggressive tactics and by his indomitable leadership, Second Lieutenant Inouye enabled his platoon to advance through formidable resistance, and was instrumental in the capture of the ridge. Second Lieutenant Inouye’s extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit on him, his unit, and the United States Army. What the MoH citation fails to note is this: When his arm was blown off by a German rifle grenade, he'd been holding a grenade he was going to throw into the German position. So he looked down at his blown-off hand, which was still holding a live grenade, crawled over to it, pried the grenade out of his dead, severed hand with his off-hand, and threw it at the Germans anyway.
