So is there any legitimate reason NOT to preorder this? I am not usually one to preorder anything, but seeing as the game is only a couple of weeks away, I'm thinking about it, if only to also get Far Cry 1 for free (because hey, free game!)

I can't really see one. Although Far Cry 1 is so cheap nowadays that it is basically a non-factor.

Wasn't Far Cry 1 released free with advertising on the load screens a couple of years back? or was that some sort of limited offer.

Far Cry 1 only comes with the deluxe edition preorder. The deluxe edition includes these DLC:

quote:

  • The Monkey Business Pack: Meet Hurk and his explosive bomb-carrying monkey in four heart-pounding missions and get two bonus ways to humiliate your friends in multiplayer.

  • The Lost Expeditions: Discover the secrets of the island’s lost World War II ruins in two suspenseful action missions, and unlock the power of a shotgun in a one-handed flare gun in multiplayer.

  • The Warrior Pack: Strike fear in your enemies with an exclusive dagger and get an early unlock of the tattoo editor in multiplayer.

  • The Predator Pack: Hunt four ferocious animals with the M-700 Predator Rifle in single-player and silently kill opponents with the unlocked Predator Bow in multiplayer.

  • The Survival Guide artbook (pdf file): Discover unique artwork and insider information to help you survive the insanity of the island.

  • The game soundtrack

If I had to price these DLC for post-release, I'd say that they would cost (in order) $9.99, $5.99, $0.99, and $1.99. If ever sold separately, the soundtrack would probably cost $9.99; although, digital soundtracks are almost always in a lossy format (i.e., mp3.) I don't think artbooks are ever sold outside of deluxe editions unless they're printed. So, the deluxe edition looks like the best deal to me.

Note: I've barely played Far Cry 2 and never played Far Cry 1, but I think Far Cry 3 has gone in a great direction based on the one video I watched.

I got heavily involved after watching the E3 2011 conference video. The one where you see the pirates executing people by tossing them in the water with cinderblocks attached to them.

If there is one thing I dislike about the game is that the main protagonist just seems like a weenie. There is a difference between average Joe and someone who just doesn't fit at all.

I can't quite tell if this game is wanting to be pulpy and satirical, or shock-value exploitation murderporn that comes off as lowbrow pandering without a shred of good judgment, masquerading as "adult" but in reality just wallowing in trashiness.

I hope it's the former. This game looks like it could be extremely memorable and with a ton of personality, that hopefully doesn't get undermined by adolescent garbage.

If it is like Far Cry 2, it will be shooting for the former, while really not achieving it at all. The narrative in that game sounded like it was trying to make a coherent point but in the end, it all felt like garbage. However, the part where Your previous "friends" try to kill you was genius.

Yeah, that's what I kind of see happening. A lot of the dev talks have been all about how they're trying to perfectly capture desperation and insanity and all that, yet most of the promo stuff, especially that box art, looks about as tongue-in-cheek as it gets. With decent writing they could still send a 'message', if they really wanted to, but trying to actually make this all grim edgy seriousness could not end well.

Far Cry 2 was about horrible conflicts and bloodshed in third world shitholes and the people who perpetuate them for their own profit, including the player character. I slogged my way through the entire game and even managed to finish it. Everything plot-wise and theme-wise in that game was handled pretty well.

I'm not sure why you'd get the idea that FC3 will be either of those two things based on the promotional material we've seen so far and the previous game.

Watch the multiplayer preview where they demonstrate post-match torturing and executing the best player on the losing team. Gave me a pretty good idea of what FC3 is all about.

I remember reading a article about how the developters were making the game as sort of a commentary on FPS games. The guy who wrote it mentioned the definition of insanity monologue reminding him of the Call of Duty games in that context. I just can't find the article now.

Ah, ace. Ubisoft decided to include my number one turn-off feature ina multiplayer shooter.

Peer to Peer hosting on PC.

http://www.neoseeker.com/news/21434-far-cry-3-pc-will-not-support-dedicated-servers/

quote:

Ubisoft has confirmed that Far Cry 3 PC will not support dedicated servers for multiplayer at launch. News of this comes from the official forums, where a user asked what sort of features the multiplayer would support on PC, referring to Far Cry 2's overall lack in this department. Community manager "MSV-Vextor" eventually responded, "The online experience does not support dedicated servers."

In another post, he went on to explain:

"Of course we are not trying to kill the pc community. We have simply decided on a different way of handling multiplayer. We weighed the different options against each other to see what worked best, and what we came up with worked very well even without DS's."

Vextor also noted that the lack of dedicated servers has nothing to do with piracy concerns. According to the community manager, the game's maps will be saved via cloud, and Far Cry 3's Hosting Migration function should transfer hosting to another player if the original host drops.

From what I've seen I'll be fine skipping MP on this one, I'm really in this for the SP and the Coop.

In my case if I want a hitscan MP shootmans then it's gonna have to be far better than the current Treyarch CoD to drag me away. No dedicated servers in this cripples it right out of the gate for me.

And err Planetside 2 just came out so lol im out :v:

EDIT: Enough bitching from me, the SP and coop look rad as gently caress and pretty much make this a day 1 purchase for me.

Eh, I'm on PS3 and while peer-to-peer servers have their downsides, I can put up with them much better than the bullshit that ensued when EA introduced dedicated rent-a-servers for BF3. After a couple of days of 'killed by admin' messages and being randomly team-swapped or kicked because I wasn't playing the way some little Napoleon demanded, I traded the game in. It just wasn't fun.

On consoles, the playing field might be at the lowest level, but at least it is level.

The guy I quoted was asking about the tone and political content of the game, and based on the preview I mentioned it looks like this game will be pretty abhorrent in that area. The fact that that sort of thing shows up in multiplayer, which could just as easily be a competent FPS without the bothersome humiliation aspect, actually makes me more worried about the single player content.

I almost upgraded to my new Far Cry 3-ready system last night. I had everything assembled and ready to go, but the motherboard was DOA! RMA'd. So, I guess I'll get my replacement board along with, I hope, my fixed GTX 560 Ti in one to two weeks. In the meantime, Assassin's Creed 3 and Hitman: Absolution appear to run just fine with a 2.5 Ghz CPU and a GTS 250.

Also, the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus is HUGE! To install the fan on the MSI Z77A-GD55 motherboard, I'd have to reverse the fan to pull air from the other side of the heatsink because the fourth RAM module nearest the CPU would not otherwise fit. The Antec 302 Mid Tower is amazing though, so the CPU fan is not really necessary because of the case's airflow. There is a 140mm exhaust fan on top of the case, a 120mm fan on the rear, a 120mm intake fan behind the CPU, and a 120mm fan on the side for the expansion cards.

Finally, if you're thinking about upgrading your system and you have a PCI card, newer motherboards don't have PCI slots. You'll need to buy a StarTech PCI Express to PCI Adapter Card or just a new PCI Express card. I bought the adapter card because I have pro audio requirements and pro audio cards are really expensive.

I'm probably most excited by the RAM upgrade though. I have 8GB of DDR2 PC2-6400 (400 Mhz) RAM in my current HP system. I'm curious about how much better will 16GB of DDR3 PC3-12800 (1.6 Ghz) perform.

Pump it up! Do it!
