O-1 Bird Dog used for artillery spotting during Korea and Vietnam. I've always liked it because 1) it's a Cessna with jaws 2) Its name is totally appropriate to its mission 3) It feels like it's OG back to WWI in its role of spotting the enemy from the air and directing artillery and finally 4) It was flown by this bad rear end mofo: Who flew it on 85 combat missions and was awarded 6 air medals.

For real, if you're at Davis-Monthan or whatever, Fort Huachuca or just in Tucson for whatever reason, it's well worth a day trip to the Titan Missile Museum. Also the Pima Air Museum since they do boneyard tours and have tons of cool aircraft including an SR-71. Flying_Crab fucked around with this message at 23:22 on Nov 29, 2012 |

It's easy to forget that when it first appeared, the F-4 was a half-generation more advanced than anything else in the air--and unfortunately more advanced than the missiles it kind of depended on to do its job. 1964 McDonnell-Douglas promotional film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hHcLb_dmLW0
