Who's pumped to see Wintersun in the US this week?! I'm surprised that Eluveitie is a bigger act than them. I guess they have actually made music in the past 8 years though. edit: Haha no posts over 24 hours later, so I guess no one. KingKapalone fucked around with this message at 22:16 on Nov 28, 2012 |

Man, I hadn't checked in on one of my favorite bands, Kalmah, in a while. Apparently they're in the end-stages of making a new album, due for spring of next year. They've apparently already shot a new music video and are releasing lovely teasers like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9tU79u3mZ4M Regardless, I love Kalmah. For The Revolution was a bit of a misfire, but otherwise I love their catalog and I would go so far as to say they're responsible for keeping my interest in metal alive. I don't know how this thread feels about them, but I think they're worthy of discussion. If you're not familiar with Kalmah, they're a melodic-death metal band that has managed to not regress into mediocrity unlike a bunch of big names in that genre. They also have amazing lyrical content. The lyricist has a solid grasp of English, but I wouldn't call him fluent, and the result are lyrics that sound like epic stories, or rather serious thoughts on life/politics that have been run through Babelfish. I really enjoy deciphering the lyrics and the intent. Although admittedly the lyricist has improved over the years, so it gets less funny and more awesome as they progress. I have no idea how well-known they are, so here's a bit of their stuff for the unfamiliar. They definitely deserve more attention than they get regardless. Early stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BEvMWirqRQ0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mz2irxsZKH0 The Black Waltz, which was kind of a shift in their vocal style and sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmZxKquN-Mk Their last album's eponymous track, 12 Guage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_-KFIbW12A Each album is fairly distinct from each-other in my opinion. They're all pretty great, except tracks on their album For The Revolution have pretty bad mixing/mastering for the most part. I'd say the one stand-out track from that album is Like A Slave, though: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3UDe1nQckY Riot Bimbo fucked around with this message at 11:54 on Dec 1, 2012 |

Oh man, the black waltz is such a bad album compared to Swamplord and They Will Return. For the Revolution was also really bad. I remembered there being one really good song on that album though. When I went to look for it I found out that it's actually a Sepultura cover but because I never got into them I just didn't know it was a cover until now. Either way that was the only thing I even cared for on that album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Wl7qndLb2g 12 Gauge was a good return to the band and I like the rhythm guitar tone they used. It just sound so much harder hitting than the guitars on Black Waltz and For the Revolution. I'm kinda looking forward to their new album now.

They used to put out pretty bogstandard stuff as far as I understand, but then something happened and they put out the awesome Redshift. The next album, New World Shadows is also really solid.

The Oakland show was great too. Standing outside in a line in pouring rain for almost an hour after the doors were supposed to open ... not so much. I think half the people that came to the show missed Varg's set. I dunno if it's just because it was storming, but just in case, if you see anything at the Metro, you might want to get there early. Wintersun was great, and lived up to the hype. Eluveitie was pretty good too. They played their whole new album + a couple encores.

The sound in the Oakland Metro was pretty bad. Wintersun's mix was terrible and Jari's mic and guitar cut out a few times. I'm pretty sure he was only coming out of the left speaker all together. When the lead vocalist's mic for Eluveitie cut out, it was the same thing. Clearly the left side.
